Treatment Of Epiphora In Cats

Cat Eye Discharge – Cat Eye Discharge Remedy

The goals of treating epiphora include 1) eliminating any causes of excessive tearing, 2) eliminating any obstruction to tear flow , 3) decreasing the irritation caused by the tears themselves, and 4) keeping the face and area around the eye dry and clean. Specific treatment depends on the cause of the epiphora or ocular discharge. There is no general nonspecific treatment for epiphora.

Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca: This Is Also Known As Dry Eyes Or Keratitis

Keratoconjunctivitis Siccaa really intimidating word that simply means dry eyes. It can be a secondary bacterial infection of FVH-1, but can also crop up with Conjunctivitis, allergies, or for genetic reasons.

Tears have antibacterial properties in them and protect the eyes by flushing irritants and providing lubrication. Having a dry eye condition is very uncomfortable and can cause severe issues if not treated, including blindness. Luckily, its relatively easy to provide comfort to your kitty if this is the problem, but dry eyes are usually not curable. You will need to manage the symptoms to keep your feline buddy comfortable.

Symptoms:

  • Your cat may be reluctant to open their eyes
  • Inflammation of the eyelids
  • A dull coating or dry look to the cornea or outside of the eye

Treatment:

  • Eye examination to determine if dry eye may be the problem
  • A Schirmer tear testto measure the percentage of moisture in the eye
  • A fluorescein stain test to check for any ulcers or erosion of the cornea
  • Eye drops may be prescribed to stimulate the production of tears, or antibiotics if an infection is present. Eye lubrication may also be prescribed to provide comfort.

Conjunctivitis: When Should You See A Vet

Some causes of irritated eyes and conjunctivitis in cats are completely harmless. However, only a vet can correctly identify and treat most of them. And in the case of serious diseases such as glaucoma, it is even recommended that you take your cat to an eye specialist. Ophthalmology is the term used to describe the field of eye conditions in veterinary medicine. Such specialists can examine animals with special equipment and better detect and treat incipient diseases.

Pet Eye Irritations: The Symptoms and What They Mean

Tear production and some occasional discharge can occasionally be normal, but they can also be indicative of a health problem. If your cat has leaking or gunky eyes, monitor them closely for other symptoms and note any changes. You can wipe away your cats eye boogers using a damp washcloth or towelbut be sure to wash these in between uses and wash your hands! Consistently wiping away eye gunk can make it easier for your cat to see and stay comfortable.

If their eye discharge doesnt clear up within a day or two, you should probably contact your vet for an examination and treatment. Depending on the underlying problem, your vet may recommend an antibacterial or anti-fungal treatment, eye drops or saline washes or more invasive treatments like surgery to correct injuries or corneal issues.

It isnt always possible to prevent eye conditions from causing your cat grief, but you can do simple things like bolstering your cats immune system and preventing cat fights to help minimize their risk of infections and injuries, keeping their eyes healthy and clear!

Diagnosis Of Eye Discharge In Cats

Since eye discharge is a symptom shared by a number of underlying diseases and conditions, diagnosis of your cats medical issue will require some investigation. Your veterinarian will attempt to rule out the most common causes of the condition until he or she finds an underlying cause that most accurately fits the entirety of your cats symptoms. This type of diagnosis will require cat owners to provide as much detail as possible regarding the cats condition at the initial veterinary visit. You should inform your veterinarian of when the symptoms first began, whether there has been any worsening or improvement, and whether there are additional symptoms besides eye discharge that may help your veterinarian narrow down the specific underlying cause.

During your initial visit, your vet will perform a thorough physical exam. Your vet may check your cats temperature, check them over for any sore or tender areas and also request a standard blood panel. All of these procedures will help your vet determine whether your cat is suffering from an underlying system-wide infection, or perhaps is having an allergic reaction or suffering from seasonal allergies.

Symptoms Of Blood In The Front Of The Eye In Cats

Symptoms of hyphema are dependent on the extent that bleeding has occurred and the location from where the bleeding began.

  • Red or pink-colored fluid in the eye between the area of the cornea and the pupil/iris
  • Swelling of the cornea
  • Cuts or bruises around the eye area
  • Pain or irritation in the eye, which may cause the cat to squint or close the affected eye
  • Blindness or decreased vision in affected eye

Causes Of Eye Discharge In Cats

The shape of a cats face may play a role in ocular discharge because some breeds, such as Himalayans and Persians, have a flat face that doesnt allow the tears to properly drain.

Sometimes the hair around the eyes wicks away tears and collects dirt and debris, causing irritation and increased tear production. In these cases, some degree of ocular discharge will likely persist. Other causes for eye discharge in cats include:

What Causes Eye Discharge Or Drainage In Cats?

The veterinarian will need the cat’s complete health history. It’s important to note any other symptoms that the cat is experiencing in order for the vet to correctly identify the disease that is causing the hyphema. The veterinarian will physically examine the cat, noting any signs of trauma, swollen lymph nodes and its blood pressure levels.

An ophthalmic examination will need to be done on the cat’s eyes. As part of this exam, a Schirmer tear test, tonometry, pupillary light reflex testing, and fluorescein eye stain to test the cornea will be done. These tests will allow the veterinarian to determine where the bleeding is coming from and may help identify the underlying cause of the hyphema.

A complete blood count, a urinalysis, thyroid serum tests, serum biochemistry tests, blood coagulation tests and chest and abdominal x-rays will also be done. Each of these tests will check the function of other organs in the body and narrow down what disease is causing the bleeding.

If these tests indicate something is wrong with an organ, further tests may need to be done, such as hormonal tests of the adrenal glands, a bone marrow biopsy or an x-ray of the eye orbit and head. These tests are advanced and may need to be done in a hospital.

Cat Eye Infection: Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I treat my cat’s eye infection?

There are various ways you can go about treating your cats eye infection, depending on whats causing it and how severe it is. In some cases, cat eye infections will resolve on their own, but otherwise a vet will likely prescribe either eye drops or topical ointment. In more severe cases, oral antibiotics may be needed to address an underlying condition thats causing the eye infection.

  • How can I treat my cats eye infection at home?

Never touch the eyeball itself. If the discharge is not easily cleared away, then do not wipe harder and seek care from a veterinarian.

  • Will a cat eye infection heal on its own?

Minor cat eye infections will clear up on their own without treatment, but its still important to keep a close eye on your cats symptoms to track if they get better. If the eye infection does not improve within 2 weeks, take your cat to the vet to rule out the possibility of a more serious eye condition.

  • What does a cat eye infection look like?

A cat eye infection will look like redness in the whites of the eye accompanied by discharge that can either be watery or thick. Excessive blinking, sensitivity to light, and inflamed eyelids are also possible symptoms. Its a good idea to look at cat eye infection pictures so that you can be aware of what it looks like in the chance your cat has one.

When Its Time To Call The Vet

Cat eye infections can cause discharge, irritation, and pain and are caused by a number of factors. If an eye condition persists for longer than a day and isn’t getting better, it’s time to make an appointment with a veterinarian to find out what’s wrong, so you can get it treated right away.

Ward advises pet owners to be wary of using old eye medications that were previously prescribed to treat a new problem that crops up. “I’ve seen so many cases where the pet owner has leftover eye medication, and when the is squinting and pawing at red eyes, they try it,” Ward says.

But because eye problems in cats can be caused by so many different issuesfrom allergies to corneal scratchesusing that old medicine without an examination by your vet can cause serious problems and even further damage to your cat’s eye.

Why My Cat Has Gooey Dark Reddish Brown Eye Discharge From His Eyes

My cat started having gooey dark reddish brown eye discharge in both eyes over a month ago. He was a little bit squinty at first, but that subsided after a few days. I thought that whatever it was was healing on its own. Now for the past month he’s had no other symptoms besides the discharge. No squinting, no redness or inflammation, no discomfort, no cloudiness, no respiratory congestion, no change in behavior, etc… Just this discharge that he never had before.

Hello, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with Hazel today.

We can see chronic ocular discharge arise in cats for a range of reasons. Now since he has had this issue for such a significant amount of time already and with his lack of other signs, concerns like corneal trauma/ulceration and conjunctivitis are less likely at this point.

Still, can you tell me if he ever had respiratory signs or an upper respiratory tract infection ?

Does he ever rub the eyes?

Can you see any inflammation of the scleral blood vessels ?

I hope this information is helpful.

If you need any additional information, do not hesitate to ask!

How Do You Treat Epiphora In Cats

Small Lump Near Catâs Tear Duct (photos)

Although cat tear stains arent typically an issue, you should take your cat into the vet for an examination to rule out any serious health concerns. The vet may suspect that your cats nasolacrimal duct is blocked if that is the case, your cat will be put under anesthesia and a special instrument will be inserted into the duct to flush out the contents.

Treatment for epiphora in cats will also depend on whether another eye condition has been diagnosed. For instance, a diagnosis of conjunctivitis will typically require antibiotic ointment or eye drops.

  • Upper respiratory symptoms coughing, runny nose, or sneezing
  • Conjunctivitis swelling or inflammation of the outer lining of the eye
  • Corneal ulcerations these are serious eye issues that need immediate vet attention to maintain vision in your kitty

Diagnosis & Treatment:

  • Fluorescein eye stain test todetectif an ulcer or injury is present
  • Eye drops or a topical ointment to ease symptoms and heal infections
  • Oral antibiotics or antiviral medications to treat an upper respiratory infection if present
  • Lowering stress to prevent reactivation of the virus
  • Lysine vitamin supplements may help reduce or eliminate symptoms associated with virus flares

What Can I Do For The Staining

There are many remedies that have been recommended for removing or eliminating the facial staining associated with excess tears. None of these has proven to be 100% effective. Some over-the-counter treatments may be harmful or injurious to the eyes.

Low doses of some antibiotics are no longer recommended due to the risk of developing bacterial antibiotic resistance rendering these valuable antibiotics worthless for human and veterinary use. Some over-the-counter products have been suggested but have not been proven to be effective in research trials.

Do not use any product without consulting with your veterinarian. Avoid using any product containing hydrogen peroxide near the eyes, since these products can cause severe damage if inadvertently splashed into the eyes.

What Causes Eye Discharge In Cats

By Autumn Rhea Carpenter reviewed by Matthew Belden, DVM

When a cats eyes are not draining properly, a brownish eye discharge occurs due to an overflow of tears. The discharge can usually be wiped away with a damp cloth and isnt a serious issue. But oftentimes, eye discharge in cats can be a sign of ocular disease and should be checked out by a veterinarian.

How Is Epiphora Diagnosed

The first step is to determine if there is an underlying cause for the excess tear production. Some of the causes of increased tear production in cats include conjunctivitis , allergies, eye injuries, abnormal eyelashes , corneal ulcers, eye infections, anatomical abnormalities such as rolled in eyelids or rolled out eyelids , and glaucoma.

“The first step is to determine if there is an underlying cause for the excess tear production.”

Once the more serious causes for epiphora have been eliminated, it is necessary to determine if proper and adequate tear drainage is occurring. A thorough ocular examination is performed, paying special attention to the nasolacrimal ducts and nearby tissues, and looking for signs of inflammation or other abnormalities. The facial anatomy of the cat may play a role in this condition. Some breeds have flat or squished-in faces that do not allow the tear film to drain properly. In these pets, the tear film fails to enter the duct and simply rolls off the face. In other cases, the hair around the eyes physically obstructs the entrance to the nasolacrimal ducts, or debris or a foreign body forms a plug within the duct and prevents drainage of tears.

How Can Watery And Inflamed Eyes In Cats Be Treated

The treatment depends first and foremost on the cause. Your vet will probably prescribe antibiotic anti-inflammatory drugs against bacteria, such as chlamydia, which is one of the causative agents of feline viral rhinotracheitis. These are available as ointments or drops. Both must be administered into the eye several times a day – and unfortunately this is a procedure that can turn the most docile cat into an angry tiger. Neither the ointment nor the drops will burn, but instinct tells an animal that manipulation of the eye means danger, so it will always try to fight back.

Home Remedies For Cat Eye Infections

Brown Spot In Cats Eye

Last but not least, it’s important to totally rule out two home remedies circulating on the internet for cat’s eye infections.

First, don’t get your “neos” mixed up. Neosporin, a topical skin ointment for humans, does not belong in the eyes of people, cats, or anybody else . You may see Neomycin listed as an ingredient in some antibiotics for cat eye infections. But they’re different products for different thingsjust don’t mix them up!

Second, apple cider vinegar should not be used to treat your cat’s eye infections. Not only is it ineffective, it’s also dangerousand can cause chemical burns to a cat’s cornea as well as cataracts and glaucoma if the vinegar penetrates even deeper into the eye. Vinegar doesn’t belong anywhere near a cat’s eye, or yours for that matter.
