Cat Friendly Dogs For Adoption

Microchipping With Lifetime Registration

Cat Friendly Dog Example – Cat testing dogs for adoption

Small Miracles offers low-cost microchipping for your cat or dog. Cats and dogs adopted from the shelter can receive the microchip, implantation and lifetime registration with no annual fees for a one-time cost of $30. We also offer microchipping for all other animals in the community for $40.

Microchips do not hurt your pet, do not require surgery and never wear out. They are inserted with a routine shot between the shoulder blades. If your pet ever becomes lost and is brought to an animal control facility, shelter or veterinarian, your pet will be scanned for a chip. In combination with a collar and tags, microchips give a lost pet the best chance for a happy homecoming. Stop by during adoption hours on Saturdays or call 410-274-3530 to make an appointment on another day.

How Does It Work

  • Most animals who are not yet adoptable are available for pre-selection. Pre-selection must be completed in person at the shelter no phone or email holds will be accepted. The pre-selection fees are the current adoption fees.
  • You will have an opportunity to do a Meet & Greet with the pet.
  • If the pet is not claimed during the stray hold, the potential adopter who has pre-selected the pet is required to return to the shelter on the due out day or surgery due out day to process the adoption. If the adopter does not return to claim their new pet, the pet is then placed back up for adoption to the public.

  • Can I Adopt A Dog If I Have A Cat

You certainly can, but you have to do some research first. Not all dogs will be good with cats, and not all cats will be good with dogs. The two arent enemies, but each animal has their own personality, fears, preferences, and temperament.

Sometimes, its not even about the species. Some cats dont get along with other cats and some dogs dont get along with other dogs. It comes down to the individual animal.

For the most part, cats and dogs get along well if they are raised together. Having them both from a young age will usually always ensure they like and get along with each other. At the very least, they will ignore each other, which is better than being at odds.

When youre choosing a dog to adopt, there are a few things to consider first.

When To Leave Your Animals Alone Together

Do not do this before you are comfortable and sure that the two wont harm one another.

When the cat can walk by a dog without the dog reacting, its a good sign the dog has accepted the cats presence. Your cat no longer hissing or growling is also a sign that acceptance is occurring.

If your dog is still trying to chase the cat, emitting any high-pitched whines when they see the cat, panting, or frantically trying to smell the cat, the two arent ready to be left alone together. If youre leaving the house, separate them until you return.

If youre able to comfortably relax with both animals in the room, try leaving that room and seeing what they do. Do they remain calm? Can they each walk by the other and not react? Does your dog immediately go for the cat when youre not in the room any longer?

Top 7 Cat Friendly Dog Breeds to Adopt

Prior to finalizing your transport adoption, be sure to ask about the rescues return policy. In the event that this pet does not bond with you or your family, lifestyle, schedule, or other pets, what is the groups preference or process to surrender the pet?

Many shelters and rescues require that any pet adopted be returned to the same shelter/rescue if the adoption does not work for any reason. For pet transports, this becomes logistically difficult. Make sure you fully understand the groups expectation for surrender of a transport pet.

    • Should the pet be returned to the group? If so, how?
    • Does the group have a local foster network to accept surrenders?
    • Who pays for return transport?
    • How long does it take to return a pet?

Living With Both Cats And Dogs

Jacque Lynn Schultz, Director, ASPCA Companion Animal Services

Im not sure where the phrase fighting like cats and dogs comes from, but in the majority of homes I am acquainted with, dogs and cats share living quarters quite amiably. In fact, it is often more difficult to introduce a second female cat or a second male dog to a household than it is a member of the other species.

    Thinkstock

There are exceptions, of course. Trying to socialize stray cats that border on feral presents a serious health risk to resident dogs, even friendly ones. Dogs with strong prey drives can put the family cat in considerable danger.

    Do fence them in

To make a successful inter-species introduction in the average household, one needs little more than a dog who understands a few rudimentary commands and a sturdy baby gate. A canine who has learned to respond to basics such as Leave it,Down and Come can most likely be controlled around a new cat indoors.

Outdoors is another matter completely. Many otherwise cat-friendly dogs view outdoor cats as prey to be chased down and dispatched a strong case for keeping cats indoors and dogs on a leash!

The baby gate is crucial in providing a cat with dog-free territory. A nervous feline can hop the gate to find a safe haven, and a food bowl placed behind will be untouched by canine muzzles.

    • Financial difficulties prevent the owner from providing proper nutrition and veterinary care for their small non shedding dog.
    • An owner has passed away.
    • A couple start a family, and the small dog is anxious and possibly snappish around the small child.
    • An owner has to move overseas, and bringing their small dog would be difficult due to quarantines, high travel costs or other.
    • A small dog has a health condition that the owner is unable to care for.

Introducing Your Rescue Dog To The Cat

Never leave your dog and cat alone together unless you are positive that they wont hurt one another.

That said, its more common for people who have a cat to want to adopt a dog than people who have a dog wanting to adopt a cat. Although the latter does happen, the dog is usually added to the home after the cat is already there. This means the cat felt like the ruler of their domain and now another animal is in their home. Permanently.

Introductions between the two have to be done slowly, with patience, and without expectations. Your animals will decide when they are used to one another and feel comfortable. No amount of force will make it happen faster.

The important things to remember when introducing these two are the same whether youre bringing a dog home to a cat or a cat home to a dog. Its not impossible and can be done using the right methods.

Become A Volunteer Or Foster Home

Do you love animals and want to get involved in rescue work? Small Miracles has several volunteer opportunities to fit various levels of commitment.

We are currently seeking volunteers to grow our foster home network. Fostering is a rewarding experience where you temporarily house animals in need in your own home until they are ready for adoption. Foster animals include pregnant dogs/cats, nursing dogs/cats and their litters, dogs/cats recovering from injuries or dogs/cats in need of socialization. We recommend having a separate area in your home to care for foster pets a spare bedroom, bathroom or laundry room works great. The shelter provides all medical care and dry food. Foster homes provide wet food, litter for the kitties, bedding and daily care of the animals. Supplies you purchase to care for foster animals may be tax deductible.

We are also seeking volunteers to walk dogs at the shelter.

Due to insurance regulations, volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

To fill out a foster/volunteer application, visit the Volunteer page.
