I Have Existing Window Grilles

If you already have existing window grilles, the most affordable solution is to DIY with cable ties and hard metal mesh you can get from Daiso, hardware shops or online. Measure the size of your windows before visiting the store. An average HDB kitchen window only requires about 9 pieces of Daiso mesh, a total of $18!

You can get hard metal mesh in black or white, at different sizes here:

Tip: When using cable tie to secure mesh to your windows and gates, be careful of side gaps. The furkids are good at squeezing through!

Hard metal mesh from Daiso.

Fit the mesh on each window panel individually, either on the inner or outer side of the grille, so you can still slide the grilles.

Tip: Lock your window grilles.

Hard metal mesh is preferable over soft flimsy mesh when it comes to securing onto windows. However, soft mesh may be a good solution for other applications.

Qittun DIY Services also provides reinforcement solutions by revamping your existing window and gate grilles. They do installation of grilles for bathroom windows as well.

Other Pets In The Household

Lots of adopters come to us for a kitten because they have a dog, and want to raise the kitten to be best friends with it. The truth is, some kittens are destined to be cats who dont like dogs or possibly not even like other cats. Just like people, cats are born with certain personality traits that are unavoidable regardless of a kittens environment during formative months. However, many of our adult cats have lived successfully with dogs in their previous or foster homes. If you currently have a dog in your household, we can pair you up with a cat who will fit right in.

The Right Match For You And Your Family

Do Mom Cats Miss Their Kittens After Adoption?

Cats can live up to 20 years or more and very actively at that so even a cat who is five years old or older still has many years ahead of them.

Are you ready to take on a 20-year responsibility? If so, a kitten might be great choice for you. If you arent, then an adult cat who might be five or 10 may be a better choice.

Common Reasons For Not Cat

  • Im worried about cost : The cost of cat-proofing your home will never be more expensive and painful than your cat getting injured and vet treatments of above $2000, or worse, your cat losing his or her life.
  • I stay on the second floor : Your cat can still get seriously injured falling from the second storey, depending on how he or she lands. If your cat is unscathed, they can get disorientated and traumatised, or run away where you may not be able to locate them. There are other dangers in the outside world like road traffic, abusers, stray dogs and heavy downpours.
  • My cat knows not to jump out from the window or balcony : You never know for sure what can happen. By not cat-proofing your home you are leaving it to chance. Cats CAN get distracted by birds or insects outside the window, forget themselves in a moment and lose balance while they are engrossed with the prey. Many owners have said It will never happen but it ended up happening to them. Our negligence, our cats pay the price.
  • I never open my windows : If you dont ever open your windows, it should be fine to cat-proof them anyway. This creates a level of awareness where, in the event that the windows ARE eventually opened to be cleaned , they, and you, will be reminded that it is unsafe for the cats to leave the windows open and unmeshed. Moreover, you never know what stunts cats can eventually come up with, including turning window handles and opening sliding doors.

Im Adopting A Cat Now What

Home a Cat

Sara Kent, Director, Shelter Outreach, Petfinder

Be prepared should be your mantra when bringing a new pet into your home. Cats are particularly sensitive to new surroundings and some may hide under a bed or in a closet for days or even weeks.

You can avoid pitfalls with your new critter and help him or her adapt more easily by following these guidelines:

Before You Bring Your Cat Home:

First Day:

Now, you are ready for your cats homecoming. Preferably, bring her home in a cat carrier. It will feel safer to her. She has seen a lot of excitement, so take her directly to her new room. Ideally, you would restrict her exposure to the whole family, but naturally, everyone is going to want to see her. Remind them of the ground rules youve set up.

  • Sit on the floor and let her come to you. Dont force her. Just let her get acquainted on her own time. If she doesnt approach, leave her alone and try again later. Some cats are particularly frightened, and she may retreat to her hidey hole and not come out when youre around at all. She may only come out at night when the house is quiet. Give her time.
  • Your newly adopted cat may not eat much or at all at first. Its best to give your cat the same food she had at the shelter or in her foster home, at least at first. Keeping some things familiar will make her feel more secure. Be sure to change her water frequently and make sure that she is drinking. If your cat hasnt eaten for a few days, call your vet to ask for advice.

Which Types Of White Cats Are There

Even white cat breeds have a variety of white types to choose from. Some cats are white due to being born with little or no melanin pigmentation.

Melanin is the gene mechanism that produces color and without it, a cats coat will be white and the skin and eyes will be colorless. There are three gene mutations that are known to produce a white kitten:

2 3
Albino gene or Albino White cat breeds are born with no melanin pigmentation. This is an extremely rare cat and most white cats are not classified as albino. A true Albino White has pale red/pink eyes and skin coloring. Albinism is not connected to deafness. Piebald gene, also known as Complete White Spotting occurs when a cat carries a dominant spotting gene which covers the coat in all white. If the spotting factor is incomplete, the white kitten will grow to be a spotted black and white cat. White spotting is not linked to being deaf. Epistatic gene, commonly referred to as Dominant White, is the gene that produces white cats with blue, orange or odd color eyes and this mutation is most closely related to deafness. These cats will have hearing loss on the same side that she has a blue eye.

I Do Not Have Window Grilles

Do consider installing window grilles for the safety of your cats.

You can also install invisible grilles, though these are more inconvenient to maintain. Go for thinner gaps as cats have been known to squeeze themselves through invisible grilles as well. A cat-safe gap size is 1.5 inch or less. You will also need to request for stiffeners for the invisible grilles as those grilles can be quite flexible . As they do get looser over time, it is important to tighten invisible grilles every 2 years.

Invisible grilles are more suitable as cat-proofing for adult cats instead of kittens. You may need temporary meshing with smaller gaps if you have kittens. If there is furniture below your window where your cat can stand on and try to squeeze through the gaps between the grilles, please go for a smaller gap size for invisible grilles. Or shift the furniture away from those positions.

There are also DIY solutions that involve securing mesh with tiny screws or 3M hooks to the wall area around your window.

Deafness In White Cat Breeds

Scientists have linked blue eyes, regarded as colorless, with a likelihood of hearing loss in white cat breeds. Cats born with the dominant white gene mutation are more prone to the lack of melanin-producing cells which create color for the eyes and skin.

These cells are also used to create a cell layer in the inner ear of white cats, essential for hearing. Without melanin-producing cells, a cat will have no skin or eye color and may be deaf.

While there is no truth that all white cats with blue eyes are deaf, science has proven that the number of deaf cats with at least one blue eye, is high. Veterinarian studies show:

  • 65% to 85% deafness occurs if a white cats eyes are both blue.
  • 40% chance of hearing loss if a cat has only one blue eye.
  • 17% to 22% odds of auditory impairment if a cat is a pure white with non-blue eyes.

White cats need to inherit a particular gene or gene complex to be diagnosed deaf. Cats can be deaf in one or both ears.

Research has determined that if the cats right eye is blue, she will be deaf in the right ear, and if her left eye is blue hearing loss on the same side. Its important to remember that not all white cats with blue eyes are naturally deaf.

To be certain of a white cats hearing health, a veterinarian should check her ears to confirm her hearing status.

Blindness In White Cat Breeds

There is no truth that white cats with blue eyes are blind. Solid white cats with blue eyes are often deaf but their eyesight is completely normal.

Most kittens will be born with blue eyes, which change color as they mature. Full white kittens will either have blue or amber eyes or possibly one of each called Odd Eyes or Heterochromia.

Non-pedigreed white kittens may have green or yellow eyes. All of them can see. If there is any loss of sight in white cat breeds, it is likely to happen gradually in the same way that the other 95% of the cat population lose their eyesight, which could be from old age, injury or illness.

If you suspect your cat is losing her eyesight, youll notice a few changes in routine. Here are a few things you may observe:

  • Bumping into furniture, walls or tripping on stairs.
  • Difficulty finding food and water bowls or other familiar objects.
  • Crouches closer to the ground when walking to navigate floors with her nose or whiskers.
  • Becoming more vocal or noisier, a sign of distress, fear or nervousness.
  • Moves around less and is showing signs of clinginess.
  • Note any changes in your cats pupils, especially if they are different sizes or do not change in bright or low lighted areas.
  • Check your kittys menace reflex, or eye responsiveness, by dropping a cotton ball in front of her. She should at least blink, if not react.
