Why Rescue A Shelter Dog

Poor kitten lying lifeless waiting for help but people didn’t bother to look at him.

Because shelter dogs are full of love!

Is it because they know you saved them and love you harder for it?

I can’t say for certain, but yes.

Jokes aside, there are three things all shelter dogs need to thrive in their new home:

  • Most Rescues are foster-based organizations that don’t have physical facilities.
  • They usually have websites and contact emails, but not all of them have phone numbers.
  • Because they don’t have a physical facility, you need to view animals in their foster network online, usually on their website but sometimes on their member pages on either PetFinder or Adopt-a-Pet.
  • If you see an animal you’d like to meet, contact the rescue using the process listed on their website or via email. They’ll help you through the application process and set up a time for you to meet the animal at the foster’s home.
  • Adopting from a rescue generally is the most expensive option here and takes the longest, but you get an animal that’s been cared for in a loving home environment and their foster can tell you a lot about their personality.

Animal Rescue Of The Rockies

Animal Rescue of the Rockies pulls homeless “at-risk” dogs and cats from overcrowded shelters and places them in loving foster and adoptive homes throughout Colorado. Each year we adopt out an average of 2,000 lucky pets. We have a TNR program and work closely with other TNR groups to help community cat populations. Each pet is spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and treated for any known veterinary needs prior to adoption. Since our beginnings in Breckenridge, Colorado in 2003, we have expanded our services and outreach to encompass the entire Front Range area and beyond. Most of our fosters and volunteers live in the Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins areas. Our organization is foster-home based, although we do have two small cat adoption facilities, one in Fairplay, Colorado, and one at the Just Cats store in Denver. We also operate a thrift shop at 203 N. Main St. in Breckenridge, Colorado.

We Are Doing Our Part But We Need Your Help

Running an all-volunteer foster-based rescue allows us to act quickly and efficiently to help kittens/cats in need. We run in a more flexible manner than many of the large shelter-based rescues with a high operating budget. 100% of our expenses are directly related to the intake, medical care, and adoption efforts for our kittens/cats, as we have no staff or brick and mortar overhead expenses.

What Is Connect For Care

You will receive information about complementary health care support with your adoption paperwork. Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue uses Connect for Care, a program developed by the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association and CATalyst Council.

The Connect for Care program provides newly adopted pets with a complimentary wellness exam at a participating veterinary practice. Please plan to schedule an exam right away the appointment must be within 14 days of adoption to qualify. At this initial exam, the veterinarian will discuss your pet’s health, core vaccination needs, and any questions or concerns you might have. The initial exam is free thanks to the charitable efforts of participating veterinary practices. Charges may apply for vaccinations, treatments, or other medications for medical issues not related to a shelter illness. In addition, if your pet becomes sick with a shelter-related illness within 14 days of adoption, the participating veterinary practice has generously committed to providing your pet with treatment at no cost to you.

Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue maintains a vested interest in every adopted cat. If for any reason you have to find a new home for a cat or kitten you have adopted from RMFR, please contact the shelter first.

If you are unable to adopt an animal at this time, consider making a difference by sponsoring or making a donation.

Cats League & Assistance Of The Western Slope

CLAWS is the largest cat rescue on the Western Slope of Colorado.

Our mission is to provide shelter and care for abandoned and homeless cats,

with the goal of finding them permanent homes or providing them with a lifetime home in our facility.

Cats Lives Are WorthSaving

We do not discriminate based on age, circumstance, or medical history.

CLAWS is a guaranteed adoption, shelter in which every treatable cat will receive

all the care they need and can call CLAWS home for the rest of their lives……

or until they find their perfect family through adoption.

CLAWS is a sanctuary shelter, which means we do not euthanize for space or because a cat has been with us for an extended amount of time.

As such, we almost always have a waiting list for cats to enter our facility. We balance owner surrender intake with intake from partner shelters and shelters in crisis.

CLAWS is a 501 non-profit organization which means we are entirely dependent

upon donations, grants, and events to run the shelter. All donations are tax-deductible.

CLAWS is staffed by dedicated volunteers who work hard every day,

365 days a year, to clean and maintain the shelter, feed, love, and care for our furry residents, organize and run adoptions, provide foster homes, fundraise, and attend to the administrative and financial tasks.

We hope you will join us in honor of all the cats that deserved better.

About Aurora Animal Shelter

Aurora Animal Shelter is an open-admissions shelter that operates as part of the citys Animal Services department. Every year they deal with hundreds of lost, abused, neglected, and owner-surrendered animals. Aurora Animal Shelter is one of three adoption centers for the city’s Animal Services department:

  • Aurora Animal Shelter: 15750 E 32nd Ave, Aurora, CO 80011
  • Everyday Adoption Center: 10460 Town Center Dr, Westminster, CO 80021
  • PetSmart and Petco stores: Some of the shelters cats are located at PetSmart and Petco stores in the metro area. A cats location will be shown in their online biographies.

Animal Services in the city began life in the 1950s when a rabies epidemic forced the state to take action. The city built a pound in the 1960s to house their lost and stray animals. Then in 1983, the first shelter was built, which was able to house stray pets and facilitate adoptions.

Over the decades the shelter has grown in response to the changing needs of the community they serve. Today, Aurora Animal Shelter and the Animal Services department offer both adoption services and a range of programs to improve human-animal interactions and care:

Tips To Improve Your Adoption Experience

Adoption processes vary drastically from organization to organization, but here are some general tips that apply in most instances. Note that we’ll use the term “shelters” here for simplicity but it includes all types of rescue organizations.

  • See an animal online that you’d like to meet? Call the shelter before your visit to make sure the animal is still available. This especially applies for puppies, which are adopted out quickly.
  • Usually, you’ll need to get some paperwork in order: a photo ID, vaccination/medical records for any pets you currently have, possibly your vet’s contact info and a couple of personal references, and proof you’re allowed to have a pet .
  • If you need to provide contact info for your vet, let your vet know ahead of time. Otherwise, they may not release your information.
  • Many shelters require your current dogs to meet adoptive dogs. Your current dogs need to be up-to-date on vaccinations.
  • Some shelters require you to schedule a home visit to ensure a suitable living environment for the new animal.
  • If you have any questions about adopting an animal feel free to contact the PetLists team!

    Management Of Infected Cats

There are no treatments for either virus that will get rid of the infection. Infected cats should visit their veterinarian for regular check-ups as this will help the cat live as long as possible with good health. Your veterinarian will advise on blood testing, vaccinations, and parasite prevention. High-quality commercial diets are recommended raw food diets may cause serious infections.

Infected pet cats should live indoors so they dont infect other cats. Other cats in the same household should be tested for FeLV and FIV. In some cases, cats that live together may need to be separated to avoid the spread of infection. Your veterinarian will help you determine what the best plan is for you and your cat.

Stress may play a role in triggering the virus to become active again. If there are other cats in the home, or a shortage of food bowls, water bowls, and litter boxes, it may cause stress because most cats do not like to share. Keeping litter boxes, and food and water bowls clean is also important. More information about what your cat needs to feel safe and secure indoors can be found at www.catfriendly.com/healthyenvironment.

    What We Provide

RMFR covers the costs of medications and veterinary care performed at the shelter, and prescription diets for foster animals.

All veterinary care and details are discussed during the foster interview and will be provided on a foster care information sheet.

Every adult cat has been examined, tested for FIV & FeLV and received vaccinations prior to being sent to a foster home. Kittens will undergo the same tests and vaccinations once they are old enough. ALL cats/kittens are spayed/neutered as soon as possible.
