What Should I Do If I Suspect My Cat Has Fip

What is FIP Disease in Cats? (Easy & Complete)

The most important action to take if you suspect your cat has FIP is to seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. A variety of investigations may need to be done to investigate the possibility of FIP . Where a definitive diagnosis is needed then a tissue biopsy will probably be required.

In most cases, cats that develop FIP will not be shedding the virulent FIP-causing virus and therefore will not be a risk to other in-contact cats. However, this will not invariably be the case and, as a precaution, where possible, it is probably best to try to keep a suspected clinical case separate from other cats.

What Should A Breeder Do Who Sells A Kitten That Subsequently Dies Of Fip

This is not an uncommon scenario. While it is impossible to know in an individual case how and where the kitten developed the infection, in most cases it will have been infected with FCoV before being sold, and subsequently a mutation in the virus will have allowed the development of the FIP-causing strain.

It is important in this situation that wherever possible the diagnosis of FIP is confirmed and good communication between all parties involved is very important to avoid misunderstanding. If FIP is confirmed it should be recognised that this may be a ‘one-off’ case or a very intermittent problem. However, it is likely that the breeding household does have endemic FCoV infection and this is dealt with under the section ‘What should be done in breeding households with endemic FIP?’

What Clinical Signs Does A Cat Infected With Fip Develop

In cats that develop FIP disease, the first signs of illness may be very vague. Listlessness, lethargy, decreased or absent appetite, weight loss, and a fluctuating fever are commonly reported clinical signs. After a period of several days to a few weeks other symptoms typically begin to occur.

At this stage, most cats will develop the ‘wet’ or effusive form of FIP, which refers to the accumulation of fluid in body cavities fluid may accumulate in the abdomen, leading to a swollen abdomen, or in the chest cavity, resulting in difficulty with breathing.

Some cats develop ‘dry’ or non-effusive FIP where little to no fluid accumulates. The dry form often involves severe inflammation in one or more organs including the eyes, brain, liver, intestine, or other organs of the body, leading to a variety of clinical signs. Many cats with non-effusive FIP will have ocular symptoms as their only clinical sign.

Once disease develops, most individuals deteriorate rapidly, although some cats remain normal for several weeks. Unfortunately, the disease will eventually result in death in almost every case.

Most cats exposed to feline coronavirus, even to the potentially FIP-inducing strains, are able to develop an immune response that protects them, therefore only a small proportion of infected cats actually develop clinical disease. However, as stated above, those that do develop the disease almost invariably die.

FIP in Cats: What Every Owner Needs to Know Our Pet

The only way to definitively prevent FIP in cats is to prevent FeCV infection, which can be challenging given its ubiquitous nature. This is particularly true of cats that are housed in high density , and housing cats at a density at or below three per room is recommended to minimize stresses that can be associated with crowded living conditions. It is important to note that while FeCV is quite contagious , FIPV is not believed to be. Rather, FIP develops in individual cats after they are infected with FeCV and the virus undergoes mutations to become FIPV . Keeping cats as healthy as possible, including preventing infection by other viruses such as feline leukemia virus and calicivirus by appropriate vaccination, where indicated, is likely to decrease the likelihood of FIP. Litter boxes should be kept clean and located away from food and water dishes. Some sources have suggested that newly acquired cats and any cats that are suspected of being infected with FeCV should be separated from other cats, although the usefulness of this management strategy is debatable.

We are happy to announce the most recent update and release of our brochure on feline infectious peritonitis , produced in collaboration with Dr. Gary Whittaker, the Colleges preeminent expert on the molecular mechanism of this dreadful disease.

What Should Be Done In Rescue Catteries To Control Fip

There is no justification for routine serotesting of cats in a rescue centre, and euthanasia should never be performed simply on the basis of a high antibody titre. However, because of the relatively large numbers and turnover of cats in a rescue shelter, this is a situation where there is a higher than normal risk of FCoV infection being spread and of FIP developing. Several recommendations can be made to reduce this risk:

  • Wherever possible house cats individually and not in groups
  • If individual housing is limited, as a priority keep this for

    – Cats that require quarantine

    – Cats that are pregnant

    – Kittens and juveniles

  • If some cats have to be group-housed, keep them in small groups and do not mix cats > from different groups.
  • Use sneeze barriers and good cleaning/disinfection regimes to minimise the risk of spread of FCoV and other infectious diseases
  • Use a separate litterbox for each pen that is only used in that pen and is regularly disinfected .
  • Allow at least one litter tray for every two cats if they are in groups
  • If cases of suspect FIP develop

    – Where possible have the diagnosis confirmed , as many other diseases can look like FIP.

    – Do not immediately rehome any cats that were in direct contact with the affected individual. These cats are the ones most at risk, and ideally should be kept for 2-3 months before rehoming .

    – If good hygiene is being maintained and if cats are not allowed to mix then the risk to any other cats is extremely small

What Is Feline Infectious Peritonitis

Feline infectious peritonitis is a viral disease caused by a feline coronavirus that affects wild and domestic cats. This type of coronavirus is different from the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 in people.

Feline coronavirus is very common and usually doesn’t cause any serious issues, aside from mild diarrhea. But when the feline coronavirus changes to a specific strain of the coronavirus, FIP can develop. In about 10% of infected cats, the virus will multiply and mutate, resulting in an infection known as feline infectious peritonitis virus that spreads throughout the catâs body. It can cause an extreme inflammatory reaction in the tissues surrounding the abdomen, kidney, or brain.

Although FIP is not believed to be contagious, it is a very serious disease. When a cat gets FIP, it is progressive and almost always fatal.

What Cats Are Most Often Affected With Fip

Although FIP can occur in cats of any age, it is most often seen in young cats. Around 80% of cases diagnosed are in cats less than 2 years old, and many cases are seen in kittens around 4-12 months old. FIP is also more common in cats kept in groups or colonies as this is an environment where FCoV infections are spread easily. A crowded environment may also contribute to stress, which can be a factor in disease development as it compromises the cats immune response. There is evidence that genetics can also play a role in susceptibility to disease, although this is complex. Many cats that develop FIP are now in single cat homes, despite coming from multi-cat environments.

Diagnosis Of Fip In Cats

FIP is difficult to diagnose. Many of its symptoms could also be symptoms of other issues, and there is no single blood test available to confirm FIP. Your veterinarian is more likely to assume FIP is present if your cat:

â Has a low number of white blood cells

â Has an unusually high number of white blood cells

â Has elevated concentrations of protein in the blood

â Shows yellowing of the gums or eyes

â Is in a higher risk group

If there is a build-up of fluid in your catâs abdomen or chest, your veterinarian may collect a sample of the fluid for testing. Fluid with a high protein percentage is an indicator of FIP and will frequently be yellow-tinged. If FIP is suspected, your veterinarian may take an X-ray or ultrasound of your cat.

There are a few other tests that may help support a FIP diagnosis. The immunoperoxidase test can detect white blood cells infected with the virus. Polymerase chain reaction technology can be used to test for the virus in the tissue or body fluid. Sometimes, a biopsy of the infected tissue inside the abdominal cavity may be performed.

Although these tests can help support a veterinarianâs diagnosis, none of them is 100% accurate.

What Is Fip And How Is It Spread

Cats are often exposed and acquire FCoV without causing any significant symptoms and mostcats will not develop FIP. FCoV can remain inactive in a cat for months, even years before they develop signs of FIP. Several factors cause the virus to change, which leads to the serious FIP infection we see in some cats.

FCoV is spread through the digestive tract and cats get the virus when exposed to stool or body fluids of cats infected with the FCoV. The virus can involve the liver, kidneys, lungs, brain, spinal cord, and eyes. Its a fast-acting, serious, often fatal infection with no known cure at this time.

Cats often carry FCoV without symptoms and shed the virus in their stool. Other cats may be infected, develop strong immunity, and be protected from future infections. Yet other cats may be infected, manage to eliminate the virus yet get recurrent infections. FIP is usually seen in young cats under 2 years of age but can occur in cats of any age.

Wet Or Effusive Disease

In this form or stage of disease there is accumulation of fluid within the abdominal cavity and/or the chest cavity . The fluid accumulates because infection with FIPV causes damage to and inflammation of blood vessels which results in fluid leaking from the blood into the abdomen or chest. Cases that develop fluid accumulation in the abdomen are responsible for the original name of this disease, peritonitis referring to the inflammation that occurs in the lining of the abdominal cavity. The fluid that forms typically is thick and bright yellow in colour and contains a lot of protein. However, other diseases can also cause a similar fluid accumulation.

FIP can present in different ways but affected cats can have an effusion in their chest or abdomen.

Researchers Make Breakthrough In Fatal Cat Disease

A new clinical trial has resulted in a critical veterinary breakthrough – cats with feline infectious peritonitis in remission following treatment with a novel antiviral drug. This fatal viral disease previously had no effective treatment or cure. Researchers from Kansas State University and the University of California, Davis, published their study results in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.

Morris Animal Foundation, which funded the research, is committed to saving cats from FIP by funding a cluster of studies that has the potential to help animal health scientists better understand, treat and even develop cures for the disease. One of these studies, launched in March 2016 by Dr. Yunjeong Kim at Kansas State University and Dr. Niels Pedersen at University of California, Davis, was a small clinical trial to investigate whether a novel antiviral drug could cure or greatly extend the lifespan and quality of life for cats with FIP.

“This research is the first attempt to use modern antiviral strategies to cure a fatal, systemic viral disease of any veterinary species,” said Dr. Pedersen. “Our task was to identify the best candidates for antiviral treatment, and the best dose and duration of treatment. Saving or improving the lives of even a few cats is a huge win for FIP research.”

Is There A Vaccine For Cat Fip

While a FIP vaccine is available, it has not been proven effective and is not recommended by the American Association of Feline Practitioners Feline Vaccine Advisory Panel. While the vaccine may be safe, risks should be weighed carefully. Before starting any new vaccine or treatment, you should talk with your veterinarian.

Because FIP develops after the feline intestinal coronavirus mutates, the best way to prevent FIP in your cat is to avoid the coronavirus’s initial infection. To prevent infection, the following is recommended:

â Keep your cat as healthy as possible.

â Keep litter boxes clean.

â Keep litter boxes away from food and water dishes.

â If you own multiple cats, keep a maximum of three cats in each room to prevent overcrowded living conditions.

What Is The Treatment And Prognosis For A Cat With Feline Infectious Peritonitis

Feline Infectious Peritonitis: Latest Drug GS441524 as FIP Treatment & Prevention in Cats

Many treatments have been tried for cats with FIP, but none have been consistently successful. Apparently, an occasional cat will recover, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Removing fluid from the chest or abdomen in cats with the wet form will make them comfortable for a short while, and a few drugs will make some of them feel better. However, there is no known curative treatment.

The prognosis for a cat with FIP is very poor. Once a reasonably reliable presumptive diagnosis has been made, euthanasia is often the most appropriate course of action.

What Should Be Done In Boarding Catteries To Control Fip

The risk of FIP in a boarding cattery should be very low assuming that good standards are maintained. Guidelines on cattery design and maintenance are available in the FAB Boarding Cattery Standard and the FAB Boarding Cattery Manual . Spread of any infectious disease, including FCoV can be prevented if there are appropriate hygiene measures , sneeze barriers, and no direct contact between cats.

Can Fip Be Prevented

Because there is still so much we dont understand about FIP and because coronavirus is easily transmitted to many cats worldwide, its unlikely that we can prevent FIP. A vaccine is available for FIP but has not been shown to prevent the disease, therefore it is not currently recommended.

Stress may be a factor, as cats diagnosed with FIP often come from multi-cat households , animal shelters, or breeding catteries.

Keep FIP-positive cats separated from other cats and practice basic hygiene such as hand washing, especially after scooping/cleaning the infected cats litter box. Vets caution owners to wait about a month after a FIP-positive cat dies before bringing a new cat into the house, which decreases the chance of exposure to the FCoV.

If a FIP-positive cat from a multi-cat household dies, vets recommend waiting a minimum of three months to see if any other cats in the household develop signs of FIP. These cats have been exposed to FCoV and can be carriers, possibly infecting any new cats that come into the home.

Cleaning with dilute bleach will be enough to kill FCoV. Always have 1 more litter box than the number of cats in the home. For example, if you have 3 cats you should have a minimum of 4 litter boxes available.
