How To Make Homemade Cat Treats

How Should You Introduce A Cat To A Dog

Easy Homemade Cat Treats (2 Ingredient)!!

Lets say youve decided to add a dog to your household of felines, or vice versa. How should you introduce them? You need to do some planning first to set your home for success, according to Todd.

For a cat, youll need to set up a room for your feline no dogs allowed where they have a litter box, food, water, and a scratching post. This is where theyll camp for the first few days or weeks after coming to your home. Similar rules apply to dogs.

If youre bringing a dog home, dont give them access to the whole house make sure the cat has some rooms that are off-limits for the dog, at least until you see how things go, Todd says.

Afterward, you can proceed forward with gradual scent introductions. Take something that smells of the dog to the cat , such as a blanket or other bedding the pet has slept on. Allow the pet to interact with the object in their own time. You can offer treats to help them associate the scent with something positive.

Once they are reacting positively to the smell, you can start to do visual introductions through a door that is just ajar, and later a pet gate with more visibility, Todd says. Make sure you have two humans on hand to facilitate these introductions you want to keep each pet distracted with toys and treats so theyre not staring at each other the entire time, and Bonk says to make sure the first interactions are short with praise for good behavior. After this, interactions can become longer in length.

Can My Cat And Dog Share A Water Bowl

One common issue that comes up in multi-species pet households: can they share the same water bowl? The answer is mixed.

Since dogs and cats will actually groom each other, disease transmission from sharing the same water bowl likely isnt a problem, unless your cat or dog has a gastrointestinal or upper respiratory problem. Make sure to regularly wash the water bowl to prevent bacteria accumulation. Bonk adds that dogs also drink more water than cats, so check on water levels frequently, and multiple water bowls means different places to drink, according to Delgado.

But other experts worry about behavioral issues around sharing the same resource. Some pets may be controlling of the others access to the water, and conflict could arise if both pets try to access the water bowl at the same time.

Bescoby says, Id always suggest separate resources in a home with multiple pets, whether it is multiple cats or multiple dogs or a combination.

Finally, a more stinky problem may arise in the litter box, since dogs like to eat cat poop and litter.

As a general rule of thumb, you should have one litter box per cat plus one spare, and all of these should be out of reach of the dog, Todd adds.

The Inverse analysis With a little bit of foresight and monitoring, its likely possible for your pets to get along even when they hail from different parts of the animal kingdom.

Key Nutrients For Feline Diets

Before setting out to make homemade cat food, you need to understand the basics of your cats nutritional needs. After all, what good will it do to switch your cat to a homemade diet if it doesnt actually benefit him more than his previous diet?

All cats are unique, but their core nutritional needs have a common foundation.

Cats require the following five nutrients in their diet:

Protein is the most important nutrient for obligate carnivores like cats and it needs to come from animal sources. This may include poultry like chicken or turkey, meat like beef or lamb, or even fish. Decisions about which protein to use in your homemade cat food will come down to your cats preferences , as well as availability and pricing.

Like protein, fat should come from animal sources. When using poultry, you can use a mixture of white meat and dark meat to ensure appropriate fat levels. If youre using lean poultry like rabbit, you may need to add animal fats to your recipe.

Vitamins and minerals are essential for cats but are needed only in small amounts.

Though your cat may need less of these micronutrients than he needs of fat and protein, he has specific requirements to prevent nutritional deficiencies.

Animal proteins provide some key vitamins and minerals, but you may also need to include organ meats or a nutrient pre-mix to ensure nutritional balance.

The Joy Of Making Cat Treats

I’ve been making birthday cakes and cookies for my dogs for years. But I have to admit I have never rustled up yummies for my cat because she is PICKY. But adding up pet food recalls from 2022 alone, I decided my girl would be better off with homemade treats.

I realized there were some things I knew about this topic and some I would have to research. For example, I knew certain human ingredients were poisonous to dogs and cats. And I knew that the two have different food tolerances.

So, before you start whipping up homemade cat treats, here are a few things you must know about ingredients:

1. Human foods poisonous to cats include green tomatoes, raw green potatoes, chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocado, alcohol, onions, and garlic.

2. Foods not poisonous to cats but, according to veterinarians, should be avoided if your cat has a medical condition or food intolerances, including meat trimmings, raw eggs, and caffeinated beverages.

3. Foods that are safe for kitty include thoroughly cooked lean meats fish with the bones removed, hard-cooked eggs, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Here’s one I often make for my girl and share with two friends who are also owned by cats.
