How To Tell If A Cat Loves You

She Makes Biscuits On You

How Know If Your Cat Loves You

When cats are especially content, they exhibit a behavior called kneading, or making biscuits. This is when cats push their paws in and out on a soft surface, pulling lightly with their claws, in an alternating left/right pattern. This is likely a left-over behavior from kittenhood, when kittens use this motion to stimulate milk flow from their mother cat. Cats likely do this in the presence of their favorite humans because they see their humans as their parents.

Another theory of why cats make biscuits is that this is simply another way for cats to leave their scent on their favorite things and people to claim them as their own. Either way, if your cat kneads on you, it means they really need you!

You Get Your Cats Purr Motor Running

Kitties purr when they feel safe and happy. If your cat purrs every time he is curled up in your lap and you pet him, it means that he feels very comfortable next to you and tries to express affection to you by purring.

If your cat purrs loudly, he feels relaxed, safe, and happy. If your pet is totally into you, you may notice that his purrs become more intense while you are petting him.

Disclaimer! Not every purr is a happy purr! Some cats may actually purr when nervous or in pain. However, if your pet is calm and relaxed, you can be sure that their purr is a love letter to you.

The Cat Sees You And Raises Its Tail

A clear way to know how your cat feels about you is to learn to interpret the movements of its tail. You will see when your little friend is relaxed, scared or keeping an eye on a given situation. If every time you come home or your cat approaches you, it has its tail raised straight up or with a curved tip, you should feel very good, because it means that the animal is happy and pleased to see you.

No doubt that with the tail in this shape, kitty is trying to tell you that they are very comfortable with you. Cats do have many signals used with the tail and are even more sensitive than dog’s tails. It may not be simply affection, but you will start to tell the difference when your cat waves its tail to tell you they love you.

Asking To Be Petted Or Even Lifted

As you get to know your cat, youll soon know when theyre asking you to be petted. Some cats do this by meowing. Others may tap you gently on your hand. Pet me is a clear sign of a beautiful bond between the two of you.

To be carried around in the arms of a human takes a lot of trust. Most cats prefer to avoid being lifted in the air, so if your kitty wants to be lifted and held, consider yourself very lucky!

TCS member says: One of my cats stands fully upright on his back legs and puts his front paws on me to be picked up. Since hes huge, its like a small child wanting to be lifted and held!

And again, some cats dont like being held in a humans arms, though, so please respect your cats boundaries.

Perhaps your feline friend doesnt enjoy cuddling with you on the couch as much as a dog might. Maybe they dont seem as excited about belly rubs and head pats as you would like. Cats can be particular about the amount of physical affection they can tolerate, but you have likely noticed that your cat frequently just happens to be hanging out in the same room you are in, watching you from afar. If you get up to go to a different room, dont be surprised if your kitty friend is close behind.

Cats tend to prefer to be near their favorite people. Cats might be independent creatures by nature, but they still want to spend time with you. If your cat loves you, she will love being near you, even if she doesnt want you to be too close all the time.

Head Bumps And Cheek Rubs

Turns out, scent is super-important to cats. In fact, they communicate with pheromones. When your cat boops you with her forehead, shes not just being cute shes depositing pheromones from scent glands on her head. These head butts, also called bunting, are a way of marking you as safe.

Cheek rubs are another form of bunting. Cats have additional scent glands on the sides of their mouth, and they deposit pheromones by rubbing their cheeks against things. You may have heard this referred to as a cat marking their territory, but according to a vet interviewed for Vetstreet, its more nuanced than that.

When your cat marks you, theyre showing how much they trust you. And they may also be picking up your scent because it makes them feel safe. Scent-sharing is a major sign of cat love!

They Knead On You With Their Paws

Kneading is when cats push and pull their front paws on a person or object they find comforting. At birth, nursing kittens are known to knead their mother for milk. Once theyre adults, many cats will use this kneading behavior to snuggle with their favorite humans. If your cat jumps up on you and kneads your stomach or lap, it means your cat sees you as a safe parental or authority figure and are at ease in your presence.

He Counts On Your Routines

Cat trust can be hard to earn, but being consistent will help improve your bond with your cat, advises Rachel Barrack, DVM, founder of Animal Acupuncture. Stick to a routine so they know they can depend on you. Try this trick from Stevens: If your cat gets particularly squirmy when you try to trim his nails, offer him a treat in the kitchen when youre done. Soon, every time you cut his nails, hell become more tolerant and head straight for the kitchen when youre done. Once hes conditioned to expect this routine, hell trust youll come through on your end of the arrangement every time. This same method can be used for meals and grooming too.

The 10 Incredible Ways Your Cat Shows You Love

By Phil Mutz, writer at LittleThings.com

Even though my cat can’t speak aloud, she is constantly trying to find ways to communicate with me.

Whether my cat is “meowing” because she’s hungry, or pawing at my legs because she wants attention, she finds ways to let me know exactly what she is thinking.

While I can’t read her mind, I know that she is also constantly finding new ways to tell me she loves me. And just as there are specific behaviors through which a dog communicates love, there are specific, unique ways that our cats are saying “I love you.”

This exclusive list of behaviors delves into the incredible ways that our cats attempt to communicate their love for us.

And while I knew a few of these already, most of them were quite surprising. In fact, I was shocked by just how often my cat has been trying to show me how much she loves me!

Which of these signs has your cat been displaying to let you know that they love you as much as you love them? Let us know in the comments!

1. Kneading Your Legs

Kneading is when your cat uses their paws to push in and out against a soft surface, such as your lap. This is one of the main ways your cat tries to say “I love you.”

According to PetMD, “If your cat is curled up and kneading your lap while you’re petting him, he’s returning the affection and telling you he loves you right back. Unfortunately, this can be quite painful, since the happier he is, the harder he’ll dig in with his sharp nails.”

2. Bringing You a Present

They Knead You With Their Paws

Kneading, or making biscuits, is an instinctive behavior that cats start as soon as theyre born. This movement is carried out on their mothers stomach and is designed to help stimulate the flow of milk. Many adult cats continue kneading well into adulthood.

Its thought to be a behavior that they carry out as a sort of self-comfort mechanism. So, if your cat snuggles up next to you and starts kneading you, it can mean theyre trying to bond and gain comfort from your presence. Cats also have scent glands on their paws, so kneading is a way of depositing pheromones and marking you as clearly theirs!

How Can You Know If Your Cat Loves You

What is love? Itâs the beginning of a 1993 earworm, yes, but itâs also a fundamental question pertaining to relationships â including those between animals and humans.

All three of the experts Inverse interviewed agree âloveâ is a hard concept to define, especially when it comes to an entirely different species.

âLove is a very complex concept that isn’t easy to quantify âeven in humans,â Kristyn Vitale tells Inverse. Vitale is cat researcher and assistant professor in animal health and behavior at Unity Collge.

Valarie V. Tynes, a veterinary services specialist at Ceva Animal Health, agrees. Love is a very challenging term to define, Tynes tells Inverse â especially when it comes to animals that cannot tell you how they feel.

However, animals and humans share a wide range of emotions. The way a cat expresses love might not be that different from a human.

âWhat we do know is that other species, beyond humans, share a lot of if not all of the same emotions that we have,â Katherine Pankratz, a board-certified veterinarian at the Animal Behavior Clinic, tells Inverse.

Offering A Slow Blink

Cats do a lot of talking with their eyes and one very special way they say I love you is through the slow blink. When a cat is happy and content with you, she may just look over and slowly close and reopen her eyes. In this they are saying, Hey friend, I love you, and I feel comfortable enough around you to let my guard down. This is basically a marriage proposal from a cat and the best response is a reciprocated slow blink accompanied by the warm feeling in your heart from the certainty that your cat loves you.

She Rubs Her Face On You

Its true that, for most animals, a headbutt is anything but a sign of affection. But for cats, its actually a loving gesture! You may have seen cats bump someone with their headssometimes gently, sometimes not so gently!and then continue to rub their faces on the person, usually on their legs or feet. This is how cats mark things with their unique scent. When a cat rubs their face on or headbutts their humans leg or face, they are actually marking with the scent glands located along the side of their face and top of their head, says Jodi Ziskin, a healthy pet coach and Director of Communications for Treatibles. Intermingling scents is a sign of love, acceptance, and ownershipcats only own people they trust. Though headbutting surprisingly isnt one, watch out for these other signs your kitty is mad at you.
