Newborn Rescue Kittens REACT to Real Cat Food For the First Time

Our very own Reilly has a store to benefit all his friends at the shelter! I bet you did not know, but Reilly loves to ReCycle, ReUse and RePurpose ! One of the main purposes of Reilly’s ReTail Store is to make sure the items the shelter does not need does not get thrown out. It could be items that were donated that we have no use for and other items that were just unearthed like a lighted Christmas tree! We also have volunteers or friends of our kitties who love to make things for our shelter to sell, like the popular catnip filled fleece mats. Reilly would love to have as many cat-related items as possible.

Reilly’s ReTail Store is not very big and is located right in the entrance of the shelter. If you happen to make anything you would like to donate to Reilly’s Store, let us know! Small items are best and maybe just a few to start out.

Items that are not handmade will be priced so they sell quickly and need to be in very good condition or new. Prices will be reduced the longer it sits unsold.

Please contact us with any ideas or items you have. It will only be open to the public during Open Adoption Events. All donations need to be approved before dropping off because we do not have the space to store inventory. Contact us at or message us on our !

Preparing Your Home For A Kitten

What You Need

Free kittens and those you purchase from a breeder or rescue do not differ in their basic needs.

Food

Kittens feed differently depending upon their age when they come home with you. Up to four weeks of age, your kitten will be nursing on a bottle every two to three hours. At four weeks of age, you can start offering a gruel several times a day. You will still be bottle feeding, but every four hours. Begin the weaning process gradually between five and seven weeks. Dry food should be always available, and you should feed a gruel, canned food, or baby food with water four times a day. Onions are highly toxic to cats, so make sure the baby food does not have onion powder. It should also be meat-based and is only ideal for exceptionally picky eaters. By seven or eight weeks, your kitten will be effectively weaned and weigh approximately two pounds. Growing kittens require 50 to 65 calories per pound per day. Many times, the best way to deliver a high concentration of calories is via canned food which is high in protein and fat. Kittens should eat enough to be full but not bloated or distended in the abdomen. Cats are kittens until about a year old. Try to get a sample of the same food your kitten has already been eating. Make food changes gradually.

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

How To Inspect Free Kittens For Health

You may have been approached numerous times about free kittens near me. Cats can be prolific breeders. A litter of baby kittens for free is not likely going to have health certificates or parental guarantees. There are still ways to enhance your chances of adopting a healthy kitten. You can win half the battle by visiting where the kittens are before taking one home. If the mother is there, see what kind of health she exhibits. Make sure she does not look too thin or have runny eyes. But especially look at the entire litter. Avoid specific qualities in free kittens.

  • Lethargic or dull

Kittens for adoption from the neighbor or a family member and even a breeder can have parasites. These do not have to be deal-breakers unless they are suffering long-term effects or there appears to be an infestation. You can spot fleas by using a specialized comb. Flea combs have such fine teeth that they trap fleas. A flea comb is useful in dark animals or pets with only a few fleas.

As A Cat Rescue It Is Our Duty To Reach Out To Others Who Need Help Regardless Of Where They Are Located

Rescue Kitten at SMART Cat Sanctuary Noida

We are directly in touch with two women in Ukraine. Theyre both in very dangerous areas of this war-ravaged country, and we are not being dramatic by saying this is LIFE OR DEATH for them and their animals. Food is running out. People are abandoning their pets. These precious and brave women are staying behind to help however they can. While I collect and finalize information about one of the two ladies, we’re going to start fundraising for the one I DO have more complete info on.

Please bear with us. We have two translators, flaky internet, and war going on, so please understand that my team and I are doing the best we can in ever-changing circumstances with information that is the most accurate we can provide. We know big organizations are getting the help they need. We want to help smaller groups or good samaritans who will benefit most.

Our first good Samaritan is Oksana. She is in Mykoliav, Ukraine. It is one of the hardest-hit areas. She currently has over 100 cats and many dogs in her care. We have already sent her a test run donation and it went through without a problem. She got the money in less than an hour. She is in DIRE CIRCUMSTANCES. Getting her some funding will help her buy food as it is available, and continue to provide for the cats and dogs as best she can.

Age Of Kittens For Adoption

Cats do not seem particularly social, especially compared to dogs. This makes bonding with their mothers and littermates more important. You may not be able to fill social gaps as easily for a kitten as for a puppy. Ideally, kittens should stay with their siblings until they are 12 weeks old, although their mother will likely wean them between six and eight weeks of age. Kittens are usually still grabbing an occasional nursing session from mom up to ten weeks old. Beyond that, the queen continues teaching crucial skills to her kittens. Young cats learn a lot by watching. Moreover, cats emit pheromones that soothe the young and place them in a mental state conducive to education. Kittens who leave the nest too early, so to speak, can develop behavioral challenges. Some common issues are persistent suckling on inanimate objects, social miscues around other cats, the inability to groom adequately, or lack of knowledge about using a litter box or even burying waste at all. Kittens can grow up shy and may deal with their fear through aggression.

Cats for Adoption

Although AFOC may have kittens available for adoption, we encourage all potential adopters to consider the rewards of adopting an adult animal. Many young adult animals are full of energy and youthfulness yet beyond the early stages of housebreaking and chewing. Many middle age animals can provide wonderful companionship without the demands of early training. Evidence shows that adult animals are able to bond with a new adoptive family that provides a secure, loving environment. Some adjustment is always needed when a pet is taken to a new home, but can be facilitated by knowing the cat may be already house trained, respects certain rules, and may even be happy to demonstrate the tricks it learned in its previous home. Discovering these little personality traits can be so much fun and ever so rewarding.

Of course kittens have boundless energy, are highly entertaining, and greatly desired. Please keep in mind that kittens grow into cats very quickly. The choice is yours and the most important thing is being ready to make a commitment to providing a “forever home” for the newest member of your family.

Adopters are encouraged to speak to AFOC about the availability and compatibility of our adoptable cats and kittens. Please call us at 860-225-1339 to learn more about that cat of kitten that has caught your eye!

We have also changed our feeding guidelines. All foster cats are on a fresh diet and our adopters will be expected to continue feeding fresh in their homes. After 15 years of feeding fresh, we have seen a dramatic improvement in the health of all of our cats and kittens. This is not a great change from our feeding guidelines in the past. We will always be a No-Kibble Rescue and are now a 100% Fresh-fed rescue. If you have questions about this, just contact us.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. It’s been a very tough time for our rescue, but with support and friendship, we can get through anything.
