With a number of projects that are set to continue the series into the future, the upcoming prequel film has revealed the release date for when it will hit the silver screen in Japan. With the film diving into the past to these two costumed protagonists, fans are sure to learn more about these two popular characters.

The voice cast for the upcoming movie might have a few familiar names for anime fans, with the likes of Christina Vee, Bryce Papenbrook, Keith Silversteen, and Zeno Robinson set to be a part of the cast. These actors might be best known for their roles as Sailor Mars in Sailor Moon, Eren Jaeger in Attack on Titan, Speedwagon in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Hawks in My Hero Academia respectively. The film itself was first announced to be in the works in 2018, meaning its been quite a few years since fans were made aware of the prequel.

Creator Jeremy Zag recently spoke to Animation Magazine regarding the upcoming project, which is slated to arrive on August 3rd in France, and working with Cross Creek on creating this prequel film that will see the two super-powered teens before the events of the television series:

Ladybug & Cat Noir Awakening Release Date

The animated film was first revealed to the world by Jeremy Zag in the Miraculous panel at 2018 ComiKon Istanbul. This movie will encapsulate the origin of the universe as the story will be set the ending to Season 5.

This means that before the production started on the film, the studio was focused on the completion of Seasons 4 and 5. A little later, at the Comic-Con Experience 2018, Jeremy Zag revealed that this film will be a musical film with featured music to be composed by himself.

Later in the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, the films title was confirmed as Ladybug & Cat Noir Awakening that would premiere exclusively in Disney+.

It was also revealed that production of the movie is underway and that the film is billed as a romantic fantasy adventure.

On February 12, 2020, it was announced that Fantawild is one of the studios helping produce and animate the film. On July 22, 2020, it was announced that the animated musical would be released in 2021.

The film will be released in Fall 2021, or Early 2022.

Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening Plot

As of now, the entire plot of Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening hasnt been revealed because the details about this film seem to be minimal. Nevertheless, there are some details that we know based on what has been revealed about it so far.

There are reasons to believe that the films plot will cover a good part of the origin story of the Miraculous universe as well as the ending to the upcoming fifth season of Miraculous. As such, considering that this shows the ending to season 5, there is still a good chance that the films release date will be pushed.

Also, there are hints that the movie will be focusing on an aspect that hasnt been explored a lot in the seriesGabriel Agrestes past. We know that Gabriel, AKA Hawk Moth, is looking to take control of both the Ladybug and the Cat Miraculouses so that he can alter reality as he pleases. And the reason for wanting to alter reality goes back to what happened to his wife, Emilie Agreste, who fell into a coma.

As such, a good part of Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening will address Gabriels character arc and whether or not he has always been the same person before his wife fell into a coma. We all know that his relationship with Adrien became sour after Emilies fate because he became strict and harsh. In that regard, the film might allow us to see the man he was before and how his wifes state played a role in his character transformation.

Is Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening Canon

At this point, while the details of Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening may be scarce, we do believe that it is part of the entire Miraculous canon. Only Jeremy Zag is involved in the creation of this film as the original creator, Thomas Astruc, didnt take part in it. But the fact that Astruc isnt involved doesnt take away the possibility that it could be canon.

As mentioned, Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening explores a good part of the origins story of the universe while also focusing on Gabriel Agrestes character arc. That means that it doesnt encroach upon the already established lore that we have seen in the canon universe thus far. This could lead to the high probability that Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening is indeed canon.
