My Cat Is Breathing Loudly Through Nose

What Is Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome

My cat makes noises when breathing, help

Brachycephalic airway syndrome refers to a particular set of upper airway abnormalities that affect brachycephalic cats and dogs. This syndrome is also called brachycephalic respiratory syndrome, brachycephalic syndrome, or congenital obstructive upper airway disease.

The upper airway abnormalities that occur in this syndrome may include:

Stenotic nares. Cats with stenotic nares have abnormally narrowed, small nostrils the narrowing restricts the amount of air that can flow into the nose.

Elongated soft palate. A cat with an elongated soft palate has a soft palate that is too long for the length of the mouth the excess length partially blocks the entrance to the trachea at the back of the throat. This, as well as stenotic nares, are the most commonly seen abnormalities in brachycephalic cats.

Hypoplastic trachea. This means that the trachea has a smaller diameter than normal.

Everted laryngeal saccules. Laryngeal saccules are small sacs or pouches that are located just inside the larynx these saccules evert or are sucked into the airway by the pressure associated with the increased respiratory effort caused by the stenotic nares and/or the elongated soft palate. Everted laryngeal saccules will further obstruct airway flow.

An individual cat with brachycephalic airway syndrome may be affected by a combination of one or more of these abnormalities.

What Should You Do If Your Cat Is Panting

If your cat is panting after playtime, while on a walk, or en route to a vet visit, theyre probably not showing symptoms of a serious condition. Cats breathe rapidly and sometimes pant when overexcited, stressed, or playing in hot weather. This is a normal response and is seldom a medical emergency.

Cool down the workout and cool down your cat. Water and air conditioning are likely the only remedies your cat needs to bring their breathing back to normal.

If your cat is panting after a day of lounging, or if your cats heavy breathing is accompanied by other unusual behaviors, their breathing is probably indicative of deeper issues. In this case, its time to schedule a vet visit.

How Cat Breathing Problems Diagnosed

Your veterinarian may be able to diagnose some of these medical conditions on a basic physical exam. For others, a chest x-ray will be needed. If your cat has severe labored breathing, it may not even be safe for your veterinarian to take a chest x-ray right away.

  • For cats with pleural effusion, it is important for your veterinarian to drain a sample of the fluid from the chest. This can sometimes help diagnose the problem, but can also make your cat feel better.
  • If congestive heart failure is suspected, your veterinarian may recommend that your cat have an echocardiogram. This is an ultrasound of the heart and can tell a lot more about the structure of the heart, compared to an x-ray.
  • Feline asthma is often diagnosed on an x-ray, but in serious cases, referral to a specialist for bronchoscopy and special cultures may be needed. If your veterinarian suspects an airway obstruction or a nasopharyngeal polyp, your cat may need to be sedated for an oral exam, skull or neck x-rays, or an exam of the ears.

Abnormal Breathing In Cats

If your cat is breathing heavily but isnt too hot, stressed, or tired from exercise, their labored breathing could be a sign of a serious medical issue. That’s when, emergency veterinary care may be required.

Asthma

  • Some of the most common symptoms of asthma in cats include panting, wheezing, and coughing, and increased respiratory rate. While asthma in cats may not be cured, it can be successfully managed with corticosteroids or bronchodilators.

Heartworm

  • Heartworm in cats can cause breathing difficulties. Treatment for heartworm includes supportive care with corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and oxygen therapy in more serious cases. Because heartworm disease can be fatal, it is important to keep your cat on a monthly heartworm preventative medications.

Hydrothorax & Congestive Heart Failure

  • Hydrothoraxis is a condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid in and around the lungs, it can cause deep, rapid breathing, coughing, and panting. Treatment may include draining the fluid, as well as medications to dilate blood vessels, get rid of excess fluid, and make the heart contract more forcefully.

Respiratory Infections

Other Conditions

  • Anemia, neurologic disorders, trauma, abdominal enlargement, and pain can also cause cats to pant or exhibit heavy breathing.

Ways To Help Your Veterinarian Diagnose Your Cat

Everything You Need To Know About Cat Snoring Cats On My Mind

If you have the luxury of time, you can help your veterinarian determine whats causing your cats breathing trouble.

1. Observe Your Cat: Try to determine whether the noise you are hearing happens when the cat is breathing in , breathing out or both. This will help your veterinarian to localize the problem.

2. Record Your Cat: If you have the ability to record what you are seeing, do so, and take the video with you to the veterinarian. Seeing the problem in action is worth a thousand words.

3. Keep Track: Count the number of breaths your cat takes within a minutes time. When she is frightened in the hospital, it can be difficult for us to get an accurate respiratory rate, so a resting rate at home can be very helpful.

4. Note Other Signs: Lastly, note any other changes nasal discharge, sides heaving, anything that seems different. Take all of this data with you to your appointment: That will help your veterinarian make choices in their recommendations.

What Is Noisy Breathing

Although noisy breathing itself is not life-threatening, the underlying condition might be. If airway obstruction is to blame, total blockage of the airway can happen quickly resulting in complete respiratory failure. The blockage, narrowing, or other issues that result in noisy breathing can occur almost anywhere in the respiratory system, including the nose, mouth, throat, larynx, bronchi, or smaller airways within the lungs. Cats that are experiencing noisy breathing should be seen by a veterinarian right away to diagnose or rule out potentially serious medical conditions.

The term ‘noisy breathing’ is used to describe any condition in which breathing is abnormally loud. This includes breathing than can clearly be heard without the use of veterinary equipment. Noisy breathing may sound like wheezing, snoring, or squeaking.

Common Causes Of Wheezing In Old Cats

What is your veterinarian looking for? The most common worry in old cats is asthma. Fortunately, this is very treatable. The next common concern on the list is heart disease, often linked to thyroid disease in the older cats. Luckily, these are also treatable conditions. Next on the list includes things like heartworm disease, tumors, fluid around the lungs and pneumonia. The prognosis for a cat depends on the final diagnosis.

Long story short, dont panic, but act swiftly and decisively, get some answers, and then make an educated decision for your cat. Time is critical with respiratory problems.

Rapid Breathing In Cats

Rapid breathing is not a disease in itself, but can be a symptom of a potentially serious or even life-threatening condition. Note that it’s normal, or at least not unexpected, for a cat to breath rapidly if it’s anxious, overheated, or playing enthusiastically. But it’s abnormal if a cat is breathing rapidly while at rest, particularly if it also appears lethargic or ill. If your cat is experiencing tachypnea, it can be a sign of a variety of issues from stress to heart disease and indicates that your pet is not getting enough oxygen through its system.

Cats are generally subtle in showing their caregivers signs of illness, so you must be especially vigilant to notice symptoms like rapid breathing. Being observant may help you to determine the cause of the rapid breathing or the situations in which it occurs. Because tachypnea can be a sign of serious illness, it’s important to seek veterinary attention if your cat continues to breathe rapidly.

What Is The Treatment For Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome

Since obesity worsens the symptoms of brachycephalic airway syndrome, weight loss is an important part of treatment if your cat is overweight. For cats with mild or intermittent symptoms, the condition may be managed conservatively by controlling exercise levels, avoiding hot or humid conditions, keeping the pet in an air-conditioned area during the summer, and avoiding stress.

Corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , and oxygen therapy may all be useful for short-term relief of airway inflammation or respiratory distress. However, medical management of this condition does not correct the underlying anatomical abnormalities.

Surgery is the treatment of choice whenever the anatomical abnormalities interfere with a cats breathing. Stenotic nares can be surgically corrected by removing a wedge of tissue from the nostrils, allowing improved airflow through the nostrils. An elongated soft palate can be surgically shortened to a more normal length. Everted laryngeal saccules can be surgically removed to eliminate the obstruction in the larynx.

How Vets Diagnose Breathing Problems In Cats

The veterinarian may need to stabilize your cat with oxygen therapy or other treatments before the search for an underlying problem can begin.

When its safe to do so, the veterinarian will perform a full physical exam and ask you questions about your cats health, lifestyle, and the symptoms you have been seeing at home.

Unless the underlying problem is obviousfor example, you saw your cat eat a bunch of Tylenol the vet will probably need to run some diagnostic tests to get to the bottom of the situation. These may include:

  • Blood chemistry panel

  • Fecal examination

  • Special lab tests based on the specifics of the case

  • Ultrasound of the heart and other parts of the body

  • Taking and analyzing samples of fluid or tissue

  • Blood pressure measurement

Shocking Reasons Why A Cat Sounds Congested When Breathing

by Linda | Jul 12, 2022 | Health |

Recently, a friend of mine shared, My cat sounds congested when breathing, and Im losing my mind with worry.

A few things can make a cat owner panic quicker than a cat with breathing problems.

Fortunately, Im here to talk about the reasons for noisy breathing in cats.

Just keep reading.

Is It A Cause For Concern

Yes, but not dramatically so. No one wants to see their fur baby sick, but there’s also no easy cure for many respiratory infections.

You’ll want to take them to the vet at the first available appointment, but you probably don’t need to rush them to an emergency vet.

Most viral infections will resolve on their own, but its important to watch if your kittys symptoms are getting worse or better over time. Some viral infections can lead to secondary bacterial infections and thats when you absolutely need your vet.

They may give you a prescription for antibiotics or other medications, which will help speed up their ability to fight off whatever infection they have.

When I first adopted Sosa she had a little sneeze, which quickly turned into runny swollen eyes. I brought her to the vet and was given a salve to put in her eyes and an l-lysine supplement to add to her food.

After a couple of days, I could see she was getting worse, so back to the vet we went. What no one wants to hear is that their new little kitten has pneumonia, but she did, so we added antibiotics to her regime.

Thankfully after a few days she began to improve and the whole ordeal was behind us.

All of my kitties were carriers of FVR and had flare ups over the years. Thankfully it was never serious and just needed some time to resolve on its own.

    What To Do Next

If your cat is having problems breathing or is breathing heavily, take her to your veterinarian immediately. While shes being transported, youll want to minimize stress as much as possible. Use a box or carrier to keep your cat safe while on the way to the clinic, so her breathing is not compromised by being held.

What Should You Do If You Notice That Your Cat Is Breathing Heavily

In most cases, heavy breathing is a symptom of underlying problems. Particularly if its prolonged and accompanied by other symptoms of distress, heavy breathing is a sign that you should take your cat to the veterinarian.

There are certain cases of heavy breathing in which a vet visit isnt necessary. Its normal for cats to temporarily breathe heavily during exercise or a stressful event. This type of heavy breathing wont appear labored or painful and should subside within a few minutes.

My Cat Sounds Congested When Breathing And Purring

    Cat breathing weird

I like to refer to this as purr-gestion. Get it? Purring with a congestion. Did I just coin a new term for the scientific community? I kind of like it, purr-gestion.

We may all agree that purring is a fascinating thing. However, as far as science goes, right now we don’t know how purring works.

There are a few theories, but nothing has been confirmed. Isnt that crazy? We should all write a petition to the scientific cat community requesting research on this. Not kidding.

At any rate, we know it’s a behavior they do when they’re relaxed, content, and happy , which is why it’s all the more frustrating when that purr starts to sound congested, raspy, or like your poor fur baby has a head cold.

But, what can make a cat’s breathing and purring sound congested, and what can you do about it? If your cat has ever sounded purr-gested, no worries, Ive got you covered here. Raising 4 cats from kittenhood to full grown adults has taught me a thing or two about purr-gestion. Lets dig in!

What Is The Normal Respiration Rate For A Cat

If youve ever tried to synchronize your breath with your cats and gotten lightheaded in the attempt, you know that cats naturally breathe more rapidly than do humans. While an adults resting respiration rate ranges from 12-16 breaths per minute, a cat might take between 20 and 30 breaths every minute.

Can Cat Snoring Be Caused By Being Overweight

If your pet is overweight as around half of cats in the UK are an accumulation of fat in the tissues around the airways means youre more likely to hear your cat snoring while sleeping.

While the snoring itself is nothing to worry about, overweight cats are more likely to develop joint problems, urinary tract infections and diabetes. If youre concerned about your cats weight, have a chat with your vet about .

Why Is My Cat Snoring While Awake

A cat that makes snoring sounds when awake is almost certainly not snoring. Noisy breathing is usually caused by a narrowing of the airways, perhaps due to inflammation, a collapse of the larynx or trachea, or a growth such as a polyp or tumour.

If you notice a sudden change in your cats breathing sounds, its always a good idea to take them to the vet. If the noise isnt constant, take a video to show the vet and keep a diary to see if the noisy breathing follows a pattern is it worse after exercise or while eating, for example?
