Why Trust The Spruce Pets

This roundup was written by Andrew Whalen, an editor for The Spruce Pets with hours of experience testing pet products in our labs. Andrew lives with two rescue cats, Church and Wally, who have wildly different litter box habits. Their input and emotional support was crucial to the automatic litter box testing process.

A previous version of this article was written by Theresa Holland, a freelance writer who has been contributing to The Spruce Pets since 2020. Her work has also appeared on MyDomaine. For this list, Theresa considered each litter box’s size, price, and features. In addition, product testers tried out several styles with their pets at home and provided real-world insight.

What Is A Self

A self-cleaning litter box offers many benefits for both cats and pet parents by automatically providing a clean bed of litter every time your cat needs to go. Cats naturally prefer a clean place to do their business and if theyre presented with a dirty litter box, they may go outside the litter box or not go at allpotentially leading to a host of health problems. A self-cleaning litter box like Litter-Robot eliminates the need for pet parents to have to scoop, saving time and frustration brought on by an unpleasant chore. Additional benefits include better managing odor control, keeping cats paws cleaner, and helping reduce litter usage. With Litter-Robot, youre not just buying a self-cleaning litter boxyoure getting a better way of life with your cat!

Will My Cat Be Scared To Use A Self

Most cats acclimate to Litter-Robot just fine. The trick is to ease your cat into the transition. We recommend placing Litter-Robot near the old litter box without removing the old litter box yet. Take a cup of litter from the old litter box and add it to the clean litter in Litter-Robot to provide a familiar scent. If you have an increasingly skittish or skeptical kitty, leave Litter-Robot turned off until you know its been used. Read more about how to acclimate your cat.

How The Petsafe Scoop Free Self

PetSafe ScoopFree Self

The Petsafe Scoop Free resembles a standard litter box, and that’s one of the primary reasons my cats were comfortable with it. It comprises two pieces: A 27.5-by-19-inch rim with a built-in safety sensor and rake, and a litter tray, which comes in either disposable or reusable form. The box is simple to set up. Just place the rim on top of the tray and plug it in.

The rim’s sensor registers when a cat enters the litter box to do their business. Twenty minutes after they’ve exited, it automatically rakes solids across the tray and into the covered waste disposal compartment. A health counter in the rim keeps track of how often your pet uses the box.

Only one type of litter is compatible with the Petsafe Scoop Free, a proprietary blend of crystal cat litter. The litter is absorbent, produces almost no dust, and provides good odor control, but it’s not cheap. A single disposable tray costs almost $20 and must be replaced every two to four weeks, depending on the number of cats in the home. Buying the trays in bulk makes them more affordable.

Automatic Litter Boxes With Sweeping Function

If you prefer the hands-off approach, you can also try a sweeping option such as the ScoopFree original automatic litter box. The automatic raking system sweeps waste into a covered compartment 20 minutes after your cat has used the box. It also has safety sensors to detect if your cat returns to the box, and it will automatically reset.

This automatic litter box system uses ScoopFree premium blue crystal cat litter trays that are intended to last approximately 30 days. The trays use dye-free silicon crystal cat litter that absorbs urine and dries solid waste.

Blass likes the ScoopFree system because of its ability to keep litter scatter to a minimum. She calls this a good choice for a single-cat home but notes that the crystal litter does not clump, so its up to the pad underneath the litter to deodorize the urine. The litter tray must be changed often, or else the box may smell after less than a week, and cats may look for somewhere else to eliminate.

Another raking-style box is the Pet Zone Smart Scoop automatic cat litter box, which rakes the litter, collecting clumps and depositing them into a waste compartment with a carbon filter that neutralizes odors. The system uses any clumping or crystal litter. Blass says that while the rake does not always grab all the litter clumps, it is sturdy and comes apart smoothly for cleaning. She also likes the units quieter motor.

What Does The Tracking And Scatter Situation Look Like

The relatively large granules of litter seem to resist tracking and the scatter situation was extremely good. I think this was my favorite thing about the ScoopFree box.

Compared to other litter boxes, including the ultra-expensive Litter-Robot III, this box did an incredibly good job of keeping litter contained. I rarely had to sweep around the litter box and the area seemed cleaner than ever before.

Can Kittens Use Litter

Kittens that weigh 3 pounds or more can safely use Litter-Robot 4 in automatic mode, while kittens that weigh 5 pounds or more can use Litter-Robot 3 in automatic mode. If your kitten does not meet this minimum weight, leave Litter-Robot off to operate in semi-automatic mode. When you see your kitten has used Litter-Robot, turn it on, and Litter-Robot will automatically perform a clean cycle. Once it finishes, turn the power off. This way, your kitten is safe while they get accustomed to Litter-Robot at a young age, and you dont have to scoop the litter box!

How Well Does It Control Odors And How Long Does It Last

PetSafe ScoopFree Automatic Litter Box Review (We Tested it For 2 Months)

Because the ScoopFree litter box uses silica gel litter, its good at dehydrating both feces and urine. The waste trap did an excellent job of holding fecal odor, but the raking mechanism didnt catch every little particle.

Fortunately, silica gel litter holds odor quite well and fecal odors werent an issue for the bulk of the testing period.

But unfortunately, ScoopFree litter reaches its saturation thresholdand starts reekinga lot sooner than the box suggests.

The litter box stayed dry for between a week and 9 days between my two catsit certainly didnt make it to the 10-15 days promised by PetSafe. By the one-week mark, the litter started smelling rank and, after 9 days, I noticed some saturation on the bottom of the tray.

After about 9 days, it was time to throw away the disposable tray and dirty litter.

Throwing the litter away was easy. I lifted the raking unit off the tray, carefully moved the bottom tray out from underneath, and placed it over the top.

Once The Litter Box Was Assembled It Was Time To Start Using It

The litter box worked smoothly and, for the couple of months that Ive been using it, hasnt jammed or malfunctioned once.

Again, the ScoopFree uses a cat sensor to detect the presence of a cat in the box. After a 20-minute delay, the rake starts humming its way across the litter bed, distributing urine and sweeping stool into the waste trap.

If your cat re-enters the box during the delay period, the box will reset for another 20-minute delay, helping to keep your cat safe.

With so many other automatic litter boxes noisy and jam-prone, the ScoopFree is refreshingly quiet and consistent. Each cycle takes just over a minute and doesnt make a lot of noise.

Aside from a quiet whirr as it runs, the ScoopFree clunks a little bit as the waste trap opens and closes, but that noise is almost imperceptible.Between the lack of maintenance and minimal noise, I almost forgot that the ScoopFree was running in the house at all.

    Sifting Cat Litter Box Option

If you prefer not to have to scoop waste at all, a sifting cat litter box system may be your best choice. There are those that are automatic and those that require you to pull a lever.

The PetSafe Simply Clean automatic litter box has a conveyor-belt system that continually sifts through cat litter to keep the litter box fresh and clean. As the litter bowl rotates, the waste is sifted into a waste container lined with a trash bag that you can toss out every other day or when nearly full.

This conveyor-belt system has no visible moving parts and is extra quiet, so it can be used with wary or skittish cats. The PetSafe Simply Clean litter box system is also an option for cats who prefer a certain type of litter because it is compatible with any clumping, scoopable cat litter.

Blass says it works well for both urine and feces and is quieter than most other automatic litter box models. However, she believes it is too small for cats over 12 pounds and is not the best choice for cats that may spray in their boxes. She has also found that it might require more of an effort to clean, which is necessary, even with automatic litter boxes.

To clean this litter box, you simply pull the lever, and the litter box shifts to sift and deposit clumps into the waste bin. The CatIt Design SmartSift litter box also offers a cover with a removable swinging door and carbon filter for odor control.

    What Did The Cats Think

    PetSafe ScoopFree Original Self

My cats quickly started using the ScoopFree self-cleaning litter box and seemed to feel comfortable with it.

My cats had no problems using the box, taking to it right away. I dont think they had an issue with the litter, though it is on the coarser side and might irritate some cats.

They also seemed comfortable with the size of the box, although technically, its not a ton of space for a cat. The litter box has a big footprint, measuring 27 x 19 x 7, but it doesnt have a large usable litter surface area. The section your cat uses measures 14 x 14, so its significantly smaller than Id recommend for most cats.

Its also important to note that the litter tray is pretty shallow and your cat doesnt have a lot of room to dig, so this might not be the most satisfying choice for cats who like to go deep in their litter box.

    What Makes It Stand Out

The Petsafe Scoop Free was the only self-cleaning litter box we tested that met the needs of both my cats and myself. While the Litter Robot is beautifully designed and seemed to function well, I was not able to directly test it with my cats. They were too intimidated by the peculiar shape and size of the litter box to use it.

My cats were willing to use the Littermaid 3rd Edition Multi-Cat, which more closely resembles a standard litter box than the Litter Robot, but the box played fast and loose with the concept of “self-cleaning.” It left behind as many urine-soaked clumps as it filtered and half of those that made it out of the box got stuck to the rake or side, never actually landing in the waste disposal compartment. I did at least as much work cleaning this box as I did with a standard box.

Similar to the Littermaid, the Petsafe Scoop Free resembles a typical litter pan, but unlike that inferior box, its rake removed solids consistently and deposited them into the covered waste compartment every time. My cats used the Petsafe automatic litter box as frequently as they used their old litter pan and I never had to do any additional cleaning. When the litter needed changing, it was simple to lift off the rim, cover the disposable litter pan, and throw it away.

How Much Does The Scoopfree Litter Box Cost

If you choose the original version, like I did, your upfront cost will be between $99.95if you act fast and catch it on saleand $149.99.

If you upgrade to the ScoopFree Ultra, which features a hood, a health counter, and adjustable cleaning cycle times, that price might go up as high as $199.95. Theres also a top-entry version of the ScoopFree Ultra available at the same price.

While the ScoopFree litter box costs more than your typical litter box upfront, thats not really the place where its going to cost you a lot of money.

Instead, the expense of the ScoopFree litter box lies in the replacement litter trays. If youre accustomed to lower-cost clay litter, replacement trays could look pretty expensive over time.

If you can get 30 days out of each tray, the pre-filled disposable litter trays cost about $15 per month for one cat. Realistically, though, youre probably going to replace the tray once every 20 days, bringing your monthly cost-per-cat closer to $20. If you have two wet-fed cats like I do and find yourself changing the litter 4 times a month, your expense could go all the way up to $60 per month.

If that sounds expensive to you, you might want to invest $50 in ScoopFrees plastic reusable tray instead of using the pre-filled disposable ones, which could cut your monthly costs down by as much as $6 per cat.

Making The Shift To An Automatic Litter Box For Your Cat

    ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Box with a Top-Entry Hood

All automatic litter boxes require a transition period. It is almost always a process to get a cat used to an automatic litter box, says Blass. There is a learning curve for humans as well, to fill the litter to the correct amount, check on it regularly, troubleshoot issues, etc.

She says when first setting it up, I always recommend keeping the unit unplugged or in off mode until the cat is using it regularly. While making that switch, Blass recommends keeping a traditional litter box nearby until the cat shows a clear preference for the automatic box.

    What Are The Best Self

Finding the best automatic cat litter box for your cat requires finding a balance between the features you want and what your cat is comfortable with. Some cats might be deterred or spooked by loud noises, so a litter box thats designed to operate quietly or delay raking until the cat is long gone may be better. Other cats may prefer extra space, so you will need to look for an automatic litter box that is extra roomy.

If you have a kitten, youll need to wait. Manufacturers state that automatic litter boxes are made for cats older than 6 months. Blass agrees, citing kittens petite sizeThey may be too lightweight for the sensors or too small to climb into some units, or may even eat the litter.
