- The güiña is the smallest wild cat species in the Americas. It lives in the temperate rainforests of Chile and western Argentina. The species is listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature , with habitat loss and illegal killing considered the major causes of its decline.
- Scientists from institutions around the world interviewed residents and surveyed güiña habitat using camera traps and remote-sensed imagery to model the drivers of local extinction in the Chilean portion of the species range.
- They found the biggest threat to the güiña in Chile is agricultural land subdivision, which is causing habitat fragmentation. However, the study also revealed that the güiña appears to be able to tolerate a fair amount of habitat loss.
- But as agricultural land is subdivided, understory forest important habitat for the güiña is being cleared. The researchers write its important to build spatial plans for this species at the landscape scale and incentivize farmers to manage their lands in a güiña-friendly way.
The smallest wild cat species in the Americas faces big problems as its habitat dwindles and its targeted as a farm pest. But a new study shows it may be able to persist in a human-dominated world if farmers and policymakers give it a hand.
In addition to habitat degradation, the researchers found land subdivision causes an influx of people into a region, some of whom may perceive güiña as pests and kill them.

Both Hunter and Sanderson agree that the güiñas addition to the Photo Ark will boost the cats image.
Sanderson praised Sartores dedication to photographing so many small rare wildcatsfrom Iberian lynx to African golden cats. He loves his cats, Sanderson chuckles. He waited for 10,000 to put the güiña on top.
Says Hunter, its great that this project has brought such a significant profile to these little-appreciated species.
Its ironic and sad, he adds, that so many people cherish their house cats yet know next to nothing about their untamed kin on every continent but Antarctica.

The is the second smallest wild cat in the world and holds the title of the smallest cat in Africa weighing 2.2-5.5 pounds with a body length of approximately 14-20 inches . This feline is endemic to the arid south west Africa and prefers dry, open savanna and grassland with some vegetation cover. The Black-Footed Cat is nocturnal and opposite of the Rusty-Spotted Cat in that they are highly unsociable and will seek refuge at the slightest disturbance. However, they are also quite courageous and will hold their ground. In parts of South Africa they are called “miershooptier” or anthill tigers due to this tenacity and the fact that during the day they like to rest in abandoned termite mounds or burrows.
In general, they hunt small prey like rodents and small birds, but they are voracious hunters and can successfully hunt Cape Hare which are heavier than them. Although they are so small, they have high energy requirements and kill up to fourteen small animals per night. Similar to the big cats they are know to cache their food for later consumption.
The Black-Footed Cats coat is tan to reddish brown, covered with dark spots and the legs have wide dark stripes. They get their name from the bottom of their feet which are entirely black. Their tails are ringed with black stripes and a black tip. All this helps with camouflage as they are capable stalk-and-pounce hunters.

Bornean Marbled Cats are among the smallest wild cats in the world. Theyre a rare small wild species that are outnumbered by other wild cats on its native island of Borneo, which is divided into Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia. With the remains of one first mistaken for those of an Asian golden cat, but actually much smaller in size, it was determined that both had a common ancestor that diverged for 4.9 to 5.3 million years way before Borneo geologically separated from mainland Asia. The deadliest cat on Earth isnt a shaggy-maned lion, a sleek leopard or a stealthy tiger. Its a wee cat that youve probably never heard of: Africas smallest feline, the black-footed cat.
Native to the grasslands of southern Africa, the black-footed cat has an endearingly round face and a light brown, black-spotted body that is small even compared to domestic cats. The wild feline measures only 14 to 20 inches long, stands about 8 inches tall and weighs about 2 to 6 lbs. , according to the International Society for Endangered Cats .
Admittedly, those measurements dont sound very impressive when compared to the sizable big cats that are among the worlds most fearsome predators. But despite its small size, the black-footed cat hunts and brings down more prey in a single night than a leopard does in six months, according to the PBS Nature miniseries Super Cats.

Black-footed Cats occur in the semi-arid habitats of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. In the central part of South Africa near Kimberley, Dr. Alex Sliwa and the Black-footed Cat Working Group have been running a long term research project that had its beginnings in 1992. Movement data and biological specimens are collected from a number of collared cats and students record prey abundance as well as other information from behavioural observations.
The project is primarily funded by a Canadian organisation that raises donations to help small cat conservation. Anyone can donate to the Black-footed Cat project via their website.

BBC has recently come out with a preview of its latest episode of Big Cats. It features a near-adult rusty-spotted cat that lives in the wilds of Sri Lanka. The rare cat is seen roaming the woods and jumping over water, searching for food, and exploring the premises. And its adorable!
Bored Panda contacted Danielle Miles, a wildlife researcher in Nevada working on faunal response to conifer removals who is currently doing her doctoral degree while also instructing classes . Miles has previously done research on carnivores and animal behavior, including the rusty-spotted cat, and agreed to elaborate on the wild animal species for our readers.
