On The Road To Find Out

Cat Stevens 1970 Tea for the Tillerman

As you pass through different thresholds of life, you look at some of the memories, and the songs that represent those memories. For sure, you see another dimension. One very obvious example would be On the Road to Find Out, which almost foretold, in very prescriptive terms, what was going to happen to me and my . Yes, the answer lies within, so why not take a look now/Kick out the devils sin. Pickup a good book now. Before I received any book, I was writing about this book that was going to change my life. And wow.

The Beatles And The British Invasion

“They were doing things nobody was doing. Their chords were outrageous, just outrageous, and their harmonies made it all valid. You could only do that with other musicians. Even if you’re playing your own chords you had to have other people playing with you. That was obvious. And it started me thinking about other people.”

Bob Dylan reflecting on how the Beatles influenced his decision to record with an electric backing band

Beginning in 1964 and lasting until roughly 1966, a wave of British groups, including , , , , , and amongst others, dominated the U.S. music charts. These groups were all heavily influenced by American , , and musical genres they had been introduced to via homegrown British rock ‘n’ roll singers, imported American , and the music of the craze. These UK groups, known collectively as the , reintroduced American youth culture to the broad potential of rock and as a creative medium and to the wealth of musical culture to be found within the United States.

Where Do The Children Play

This song has become even more vivid as a statement of what our world is going through and what we’ve done to it. In the last verse we sing about the development of science and the way in which it’s influencing our humanity: “Will you tell us when to live? Will you tell us when to die?” That’s really not far off considering how it’s all going, and the way in which people now are being so profiled subversively, I would say. Who knows what kind of games are going on in the scientific lab that are going to affect our lives in the future? Lots of things there which have ominous meanings or implications.

Now, as he said at the time of his departure from the music world, Ive

But I Might Die Tonight

Cat Stevens

But I Might Die Tonight has a message thats consistently relevant to so many people. We talk about corporate companies, and they’re getting bigger and more monstrous as time goes on. Now they’re bigger and more powerful than governments! Either you belong to a company or you don’t belong. If you don’t belong to a company, you’re in the danger zone. You’re likely to be wiped off. That song is talking about people who feel that life is in somebody else’s hands. You’ve got to take ownership, because you might die tonight. That’s a very powerful message.

When I wrote that song, I was being asked by the director of this film called Deep End with Jane Asher. He wanted to use Father and Son. I said, “No, no, you can’t use Father and Son, because it’s for a musical opera. So I tried to get out of it by saying I’ll write another song that was similar.

Tea For The Tillerman Tracklist

Cat Stevens’ first album made him a UK teen sensation. His rushed follow-up was called unsuccessful. After almost dying of tuberculosis and a collapsed lung, Stevens’ third album saw him re-emerge as a gentle folk singer. But it was his fourth album Tea For The Tillerman that made Stevens an international superstar.

On the strength of its second single Wild World, the album made the top 20 in the US, the UK, Canada and New Zealand, and was the launching pad for his next four albums to reach the top 5 in several countries.

Despite Wild World being its only single with massive chart success, many of the songs on Tea For The Tillerman are Stevens’ most popular and remembered, and the album is still considered a masterpiece.

Yusuf/cat Stevens Breaks Down Every Song On His Seminal Breakthrough Tea For The Tillerman

Change is a recurring theme in the music of Cat Stevens. Perhaps thats because hes gone through so many incarnations himself. Born Steven Georgiou in Londons West End, he fashioned himself into a teenage Swinging 60s pop idol before maturing into the folk-tinged spiritual seeker who beguiled fans in the 70s with musical dispatches from his metaphysical journey. In 1977 he underwent his most famous reinvention by adopting the Islamic faith and rejecting the entertainment industry. Taking the name Yusuf Islam, he sold his guitars and dedicated the next three decades to theological study and charity work. Then in 2006 he released the first in a series of four albums, marking a tentative reconciliation with both Western music and also his own legacy as a reluctant superstar. Now hes revisiting Tea for the Tillerman, the seminal 1970 album that made him a global artistic force. Having teamed up with original producer Paul Samwell-Smith and co-guitarist Alun Davies, Tea for the Tillerman² finds Yusuf bringing half a century of experience to the words he wrote in his early 20s.

Speaking from his villa in Dubai, where hes in the midst of completing his autobiography, Yusuf went track-by-track through the 11 songs that compose Tea for the Tillerman.

Yusuf / Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman

Music has a very important part to play in the shaping of our dreams and the shaping of what we want for tomorrow what we want for today. Yusuf / Cat Stevens

In 1970 Cat Stevens released Tea For The Tillerman, a musical masterpiece that is widely lauded as one of the greatest albums of all time. 50 years on and Yusuf / Cat Stevens, as he is now known, has re-imagined the album for a whole new age. The result, Tea for the Tillerman², is a loving tribute to the original recording and demonstrates how the songs are able to transcend their own time and stay relevant in an ever changing and increasingly wild world.

The new album was recorded at Studio La Fabrique in the French Provençal countryside near to where Yusufs favourite artist, Vincent Van Gogh, painted many of his most beloved works. The sun bleached stones of the large farmhouse turned studio were bathed in the same hazy late-summer golden light that inspired the Dutch master as Yusuf drew from his vivid sonic pallet, conjuring images and moods to once again enrich the experience of his millions of fans worldwide.

New Album: Tea For The Tillerman

Like it was destiny waiting to happen, T4TT² feels like the timing of its message has arrived again. Yusuf / Cat Stevens

50 YEARS on from the release of Tea for the Tillerman, the 1970 multi-platinum selling, era-defining album that made a superstar, Yusuf / Cat Stevens is set to release Tea for the Tillerman² on 18th September via UMC. The albums lead single, a stunning re-vamped version of his ecological anthem Where Do The Children Play? is available to stream and download right now!! Click HERE

Tea for the Tillerman² sees Yusuf recast the same eleven songs for a new age with dramatic results. Half a century and an entire universe of experiences after they were originally laid down on tape, T4TT² is a beautiful reunion between the artist and the songs that helped define the melodious 70s. The impact of Tillerman has subtly intertwined with the fabric of popular culture while its songs have magnified and developed a life of their own through their ever-expanding use in film, TV, and numerous reinterpretations by other artists.

The album cover of T4TT² illustrates the same picturesque Tea-Time scene that adorned the original album, fifty years later. The Tillerman has returned from an expedition to outer space only to discover a world that has become decidedly darker. The two toddlers, Grady and Timmy, are still playing next to him this time streaming the latest music and gaming on their mobile phones.
