Do I Need To Be Concerned About Offering Treats And Snacks To A Mature Senior Or Geriatric Cat

It is important to include treats and snacks in your discussion with your veterinarian about appropriate food choices for your mature cat. Unfortunately, many cat treats are just as unhealthy as the ‘junk food’ people consume!

“Snacks from the table are not balanced at all and may contain high levels of fat and sodium.”

It is best to choose commercial treats that reflect the nutrient balance of the chosen senior ration. Snacks from the table are not balanced at all and may contain high levels of fat and sodium.

With just a bit of planning and monitoring, you can lay the nutritional foundation for your cat’s healthy senior years.

Senior Cat Food Needs More Fiber

Fiber is a naturally occurring carbohydrate that can be found in a variety of foods. For younger cats, they would traditionally get fiber from the hair and bones of their prey. However, older cats do not receive fiber as much in this manner and require it through other sources of food.

Fiber can be very beneficial when included in your cats diet. For starters, fiber can prevent hairballs. We all know that hairballs are just a side effect of all the grooming cats do but with more fiber, hairballs will move naturally through their digestive tract instead of building up until they need to regurgitate it.

Additional fiber can help reduce digestive issues such as constipation and diarrhea.

The reason fiber is so beneficial in these areas is because it is indigestible.

Since your cat cant digest any fiber it consumes, it will move swiftly through their digestive system bringing anything else in their digestive tract with it.

(24 Pack) Fancy Feast High Protein Senior Gravy Wet Cat Food, Chicken ...

Your cat is sure to love the taste and flavor of this simple yet flavorful gravy. It is easy to make, as the name suggests, and it is full of flavor so your cat should not be shy of it. You can add veggies or meat as you see fit. Here are the basic ingredients that you will need:

  • Simply put everything in a pot, and then let it simmer for at least 2 hours.
  • After simmering, let the brew rest until it is lukewarm.
  • Then serve the broth up, put it in the fridge, or store it in the freezer for later use.

If you added any bone, remove it before serving to your cats. Never give your cat a cooked bone, and never use leftovers from marinated meats or meats pre-cooked with condiments only plain, natural leftovers.

Is It Common For Older Cats To Lose Weight

Elderly cats can lose weight because their metabolism slows down. It becomes more difficult to process food, so they eat less. Theyre also less physically active, so they start to lose muscle mass.

Older cats can lose so much weight that they start to look skinny and bony. This is due to health complications that are part of the aging process, such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, arthritis, and renal failure.

I also noticed that she was much fussier with her food and regurgitated her meals more often. I consulted my vet, and they told me that now that she is older, her nutritional needs have changed.

However, this is offset a bit by the inclusion of l-Carnitine, which is designed to boost your cats metabolism, making them more active and less likely to put on weight. It is high in protein, mostly from deboned chicken, which is a great source for older cats, though it does also contain chicken and herring meal.

This formula is enriched with the same vitamins, minerals, and taurine seen in most senior cat foods. It is also rich in prebiotics and probiotics to ensure a healthy stomach and good digestion.
