My Story Of Adopting A Young Kitten

I adopted a 6-week-old kitten many years ago. This poor little lad looked so scared and alone in his cage, and I felt the need to get him out of there. I paid $6 and took him home. The second day there he vomited roundworms all over the floor. Roundworms can and do happen in kittens, but when they are raised properly, they will be routinely wormed so this kind of thing cant happen. He was seen by a vet the following day and aside from roundworms, was given a clean bill of health and by then I had decided to keep him.

The kitten grew into an adult with several behavioral issues. He had no idea how to interact with other cats, he constantly sprayed furniture, and he suffered from petting-induced aggression. Based on study findings, I believe the behavioral problems were due to his being taken away from mum way too early.

Kittens are kittens for many months, letting yours stay with mum and siblings until 10-12 weeks ensures that you will get a well-rounded kitten, but he will still be young enough to enjoy much more time as a kitten. It is worth waiting the extra four or so weeks to avoid a possible lifetime of behavioural problems.

Hope is not lost for kittens who are separated from their mother too early, but it may take time and patience to help them adjust and grow into healthy and happy adult cats, which is all we want for them.

• Foster and adopt out the kittens. If you have the resources, you can separate kittens over four weeks old from their mother and bring them indoors to socialize them for adoption.
• Either way, spay mom. Mom cat should be spayed as part of a TNR program and returned to her outdoor home regardless of what decision you make for the kittens.
• What if mom is friendly? You can still TNR mom if she is friendly, or socialized, to people. If you have the time and resources, you may consider fostering and adopting her out. But returning her outdoors is also fine.

What if kittens and mom are in danger? In rare extreme cases, you may determine that it is safer for both mom and kittens to come indoors. These cases include if they appear to need medical attention or if the environment will cause immediate harm to the kittens or is about to be destroyed.

Some friends of ours are fostering a semi-feral mom cat and her four kittens. We are strongly considering adding a kitten to our family. Always wait to see if mom returns. Watch for a few hours from a distance or a hidden spot. Even if mom doesnt seem to be around, she may just be out looking for food or taking a break. She may even be hiding and waiting for YOU to leave!

Has mom not returned after several hours? Step in and help the kittens yourself. You can also do the same if you determine that the kittens are in immediate danger. By immediate danger, we mean if the kittens are injured, look like they are not moving, or if the area they are in is deadly hot or cold or about or be destroyed by natural dilapidation, disaster, or construction.

• Foster and adopt the kittens. If you have the time and resources, you can foster the kittens for adoption, or adopt them yourself, once they have been spayed or neutered.

How Do I Feed A Weaning Kitten

If kittens are not orphaned, you dont have to feed a bottle. They can still nurse when they are with mom. Just want to have some time away from mom to give her a break and decrease their dependence on her.

While your orphan kitten is weaning, you should feed them kitten formula from a bottle or shallow bowl. When bottle-feeding, always tilt the bottle and make sure the kitten is on their stomach, never their back.

When kittens are still drinking formula, you will need to burp them. Burp a weaning kitten by placing them on your shoulder or on their stomach and patting them gently. You will be able to hear or feel them burp.

To encourage a kitten to make the shift from bottle to bowl, dip your finger into the bowl and let the kitten lick formula off your finger. Gradually direct your kitten to the bowl â patiently â until they learn the process.
