Michianas Menu: Yellow Cat Cafe Is A Home Away From Home For Many

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A home away from home! On this weeks Michianas Menu, we introduce you to Yellow Cat Cafe. The local diner is known not only for its sprinkled pancakes and savory burgers, but also its ability to unite many different people of the community.

Located in downtown South Bend, Yellow Cat Cafe has been a go to bite to eat since 2017. The diner offers the comfort of omelets to burgers, pancakes to meatloaf and everything in-between.

But perhaps the most notable part of the little yellow building? The atmosphere. Stacey Glassburn Wilson first opened Yellow Cat Cafe with one thing in mindproviding a home for everyone.

So, I was raised a gatherer, I was a little girl who bought stray puppies home, strangers home, it has always been how I was, says Wilson. You never know who comes through the door, what there day is like, but you have the opportunity to make it a bit better. I think we have gotten away from that in society we do not think so much about where other people are coming from, and I am really proud of the fact people here put down their phones and talk to each other.

The restaurant acts as a melting pot and brings together a mixture of Michiana locals and university students alike. Peoplefrom all walks of life.

Staceys son, Taylor Wilson, is a manager at Yellow Cat Café. He says that his moms drive, dedication and positive attitude inspires the rest of the staff and thats what makes the customer experience so great.

South Bend’s Yellow Cat Cafe Creeps Closer To Opening

Stacey Wilson, owner of Mishawaka’s Lincolnway Cafe, never planned to open a second restaurant. But that’s just what she’ll do in a couple of weeks.

Yellow Cat Cafe, Wilson’s new venture, is expected to open at the end of the first week of the new year. The cafe is opening at 808 E. Colfax Ave., in South Bend, which has seen many businesses come and go.

The building was originally a gas station, but has housed a radio repair shop and a few restaurants like Cedar House Restaurant and most recently Dixie.

The stars seemed to have aligned for Wilson to take over the location. Wilson said she heard the building had sold, but after talking to a friend who is a local business owner, she learned that not only was it still available, but the owner is a cousin of one of her frequent customers at Lincolnway.

That loyal customer happened to be in Lincolnway Cafe the next day, Wilson said, so she asked about the building. The building’s owner lives in Kansas City, but happened to be in South Bend at the time.

He came by Lincolnway Cafe for lunch, she said, and they chatted after his meal and then the two headed over to the Colfax Avenue building.

Three hours after seeing the building, Wilson said, she called the owner and told him she was in. But when she received the paperwork to sign, she panicked.

“What were you thinking?” she said she asked herself.

“Somehow the stars line up the way they are supposed to,” she said, “so I signed the papers and here we are.”

09/01/2019MenuPix UserMy husband and I arrived at the restaurant a little before noon on a Sunday. We waited approximately 5 minutes for a booth ~ the cafe was very busy! Our waitress was exceptional! She took our order and made sure my coffee cup remained full ~ for the next HOUR. Our food was FINALLY delivered around 1:10. It was very good, but we were so surprised to have had to wait so long especially since one of us ordered a special of the day. We also noticed a table of 7 received their food ahead of us even though they weren’t seated until well after us. This was the second time I have eaten at Yellow Cat Cafe. My experience was far different than the first visit I had. Maybe because my first visit was during the week and they weren’t as busy as a Sunday? We’ll go back ~ it’s a great local restaurant within walking distance of our home. As I said, the food was terrific, the restaurant was clean, and the staff was very pleasant. We just can’t understand why it took so long for us to receive our food!!!
