Current Status Of Feral Cat Surgery Dropoff Policy

TRAPPED/FERAL CAT DROP OFF TIMES

• Sunday: No feral dropoffs for now
• Monday: Accepting ferals 8:30am – 3:00pm
• Tuesday: Accepting ferals 8:30am – 3:00pm
• Wednesday: Accepting ferals 8:30am – 3:00pm
• Thursday: Accepting ferals 8:30-10:00AM
• Friday: No feral dropoffs

Please check this schedule before trapping. Our goal is to be able to perform surgery the day the cat arrives. This reduces the cat’s length of stay at our clinic and reduces stress for the cat. However, we can only safely complete surgeries on a certain number of cats each day. If we receive too many ferals on a particular day, we will need to defer surgery until the next day. The clinic staff will let you know when you drop off which day surgery will occur.

If you have an appointment for your feral, the schedule for drop off times here does not apply. However, the rules in terms of traps still apply. Feral cats must arrive in traps to receive surgery.

When To Spay/neuter Your Pet

For dogs: Puppies as young as eight weeks old can be neutered as long as theyre healthy. Dogs can be neutered as adults as well, although theres a slightly higher risk of post-operative complications in older dogs, dogs that are overweight or dogs that have health problems.

For cats: It is generally considered safe for kittens as young as eight weeks old to be spayed or neutered. Its possible to spay a female cat while shes in heat.

Spay/Neuter TattooYour pet will receive a small, green tattoo near the incision site. This tattoo is not another incisionits just a small score in the top layers of the skin filled with tattoo ink and covered with surgical glue. The tattoo will ensure that anyone examining your animal will know they have been sterilized.

TCAP offers the humane sterilization of feral wild cats at our 8 DFW area flagship clinics in Allen, Arlington, Burleson, Denton, Fort Worth, Hurst, Garland, and Weatherford.

Additional things feral caretakers should know:

• Caretakers must elect for the cat to receive a rabies vaccine at a cost of $5
• Only 4 cats, each in their own live trap, will be accepted per person. Cats not brought in a live trap, will be subject to paying full price for their sterilization and require an appointment. Additional cats, after the first 12 in line, may be declined for service, or if the schedule permits may be accepted at full spay/neuter price.
• Caretakers are responsible for additional fees incurred during surgery . Caretakers will also incur an anesthesia fee for cats who are presented for surgery and already sterilized.
• Some cities require feral cat colony registration.

Female pets will live longer because spaying helps prevent certain infections, tumors and cancers, and also makes them content to stay indoors and out of danger. Males will likely live longer because they wont have the strong urge to go outside, and neutering male pets also helps prevent prostrate problems and testicular cancer.

Your female pet will not go into heat. If youve ever owned a cat in heat, you know what Im talking about when I say its beyond frustrating. Females in heat will howl or meow constantly, and sometimes spray or urinate all over the house.

Why Is Tnr Important

Trap-Neuter-Return is generally accepted to be the most humane and effective way to control feral cat overpopulation. Once spayed, female feral cats tend to live much healthier lives because they will no longer have to provide nutrients to litter-after-litter. Male cats have a reduced need to roam and defend territory once they are neutered, thus reducing their chances of injury.

Other efforts to control feral cat populations typically include relocating cats. This method is usually less effective because feral cats can typically reproduce faster than they can be removed from the environment. TNR operates on the idea that once an entire colony is TNRd, the existing cats claim the resources within their territory which deters other cats from entering. If all cats in a feral colony are TNRd there is no longer a fight for food and shelter and all cats may have a healthier, safer life as a result.

TCAP now offers free feral sterilizations for the first 12 feral cats per surgery day at our 6 main locations in Denton, Fort Worth, Burleson, Allen, Hurst and Weatherford on regular surgery days. Here are some of the easiest ways to find low-cost or free spay or neuter clinics in your area.

1. Google free spay neuter near me. If any clinics are available in your area, theyll show up.

2. Ask your veterinarian. You should call your veterinarian and also several other local veterinarians to ask for a recommendation for low-cost or free spaying or neutering. My veterinarian works with a local feral-cat rescue program and provides spaying and neutering for them. I was able to get my new kitten, Whiskers, neutered plus all of his first shots for $100 through that feral-cat program. Its worth asking.

3. Check with local pet stores like Petco and PetSmart. They may have a spay neuter clinic themselves, or they may be able to refer you to a spay neuter program in your area.

4. Call your local SPCA. They may know of programs in your area.

Alley Cat Allies Feral Cat Spay/neuter Clinic Findings

For ten years, from 1998 to 2007, Alley Cat Allies founded, funded, and operated a subsidized, monthly spay/neuter clinic in Northern Virginia for feral cats all over the region. The clinic ran 110 spay days and served more than 6,500 cats from four statesDelaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginiaand the District of Columbia.

The clinic was staffed by volunteers and veterinarians who provided their services pro bono. There was no cost to people bringing in cats, though they were asked for a donation. These donations helped cover approximately one-third of the operational cost of the clinic. As part of the protocol for this model clinic, we collected data about each cat, including:
