How To Draw A Cat Tail

Constructing The Cats Second Back Leg

How to Make A Cat Tail (DIY)

For the second back leg, you are going to follow the same basic steps that you did for the first back leg. Start with another square U shape, but draw this one facing straight down rather than to the back. You want to make sure that the rear line of this U shape begins on the U shape of the other back leg, to capture the right perspective.

To finish this final back leg, you are going to use two short lines and an uneven circle. To capture the correct angle of the cats back leg, you want these two lines to be angled towards the front of the cats body. You also want to make sure that the uneven circle faces forwards.

At this stage of the how to draw a realistic cat tutorial, you should start to see the basic shape of your cat coming together, and it should look something like our example below.

Adding The Second Coat Of Color

For this next coloring step, you need to choose a light grey color. Add a very light coat of this color to most of the cats body, leaving areas of the light brown shade around the cats nose, under its belly, and around its legs.

At the end of this step, your cats coloring should look a little something like this.

How To Draw An Angry Anime Cat

    Step 1:

Create a circle for the cats head. Draw a vertical line within the circle to indicate the middle of the cats face. Draw a horizontal line within the circle for the eye line guide.

    Step 2:

To draw the back line of the cat, create an arch. At the end of the arc add in the cats tail. To create an angry feel, point the tail up.

    Step 3:

Draw the back leg of the cat. Draw a circular curve for the thigh then add in the lower portion of the leg and round the paw.

    Step 4:

Create another arc parallel to the back arc you drew. This will serve as the cats belly line.

    Step 5:

Add in the two front paws right next to each other. Draw in the other back leg by mirroring the first leg you drew.

    Step 6:

Finish the cats body by adding fur clumps around the back and tail part of the cat. Make sure to point the clumps up and out. Vary the size of the fur clumps to create a more natural look. Dont forget to add a line to the middle of each paw.

    Step 7:

Point the ears towards the cats back to make an angry expression.

    Step 8:

Add extra fur to the cheeks of the cat to change up its face shape.

    Step 9:

Create the cats facial features by following the facial guidelines. Add the nose below the intersection of the horizontal and vertical guide. Add a little upside-down V shape just below the nose, this will serve as the cats mouth.

    Step 10:

Remove any guidelines that were left and finish the drawing by adding shadows and shades where necessary.

Finishing And Adding Details To Your Cat Drawings

Were almost done! Our step-by-step cat drawings really only need detailing at this point. We started with a lot of hard angles and lines, and now we can round them off and soften them up. I recommend drawing over the lines you already have and bending them slightly as you do.

For both cats, the inner ears are suggested by nothing but a pair of simple lines.

For the hairless cat, finish the nose by adding curved lines from the insides of the eyes down to the cheek circles. Three curvy lines between the elbows, resembling a frowny face, and the hairless cat now has a tummy and a couple of wrinkles. Our kitten could use some whiskers and scribbles for fur. Toes for both cat drawings are nothing more complicated than Us for the hairless cat and little lines for the kitten.

Hey! Chances are youve just drawn something that looks remotely cat-like! That more than qualifies as a success. In my own artistic pursuits, I hardly ever use an eraser. I think the messier something is, the more character it has. It reminds me that something doesnt have to be perfect or excessively detailed in order to be beautiful.

Blending Shades And Adding The Third Coat Of Color

    Cat Tail Drawing at PaintingValley.com

Using a soft brush, lightly add a third coat of a slightly darker shade of brown. Again, like the grey, you want to focus most of this brown on the upper half of the cat, leaving the lighter brown shades on the bottom.

For a realistic fur effect, you can make this coat a little more patchy. Patches of lighter and darker color help to make your drawing of a cat more realistic.

Fine Lining The Outline Of Your Cat Drawing

    How to Draw Cattails

After all these steps using construction lines, it is finally time to put them to use and draw the final outline for your drawing of a cat. The best place to begin drawing your outline is at the head. Using the oval shape to help you, trace the ears and then flatten the top of the head slightly, before dipping down into the oval just a touch. You can then follow the bottom of the head curve, creating a slight bump for the nose. After you have outlined the chin, take the line straight across to meet the main body oval just below the front point.

You can follow the other construction lines pretty closely for the rest of the outline. For the cats tail, outline the construction line on either side. Do not be afraid of not sticking to the construction lines perfectly, a few bumps and curves will add texture and realism to your drawing of a cat.

You can use short hair-like strokes to complete some of the outlining to give the impression of fur. Along the belly in particular, you can make the furry lines a little longer. For added realism, draw a few curved lines to separate the toes in the paws.

Once you are happy with your outline, you can erase all the remaining construction lines.
