If your cat has not passed faeces for 48 hours, he will need to be checked by your vet. Your vet will discuss your cats signs with you and perform a physical examination. Further tests such as x-rays, ultrasound, blood and urine tests may be needed.
If dietary adjustments have not worked, your vet may give your cat an enema. DO NOT use over-the-counter enema solutions designed for humans. Some of them contain enough potassium to kill a cat. Your cat may also be given fluids . In some severe cases, your cat may need to be sedated to have the faeces manually removed.

When Should You See A Vet For White Poop

The stools that it passesif any are produced at allwill be small and very hard.
- Kittens that eat something that causes an obstruction in their stomachs or intestines will be unable to defecate. This is common with curious kittens that eat things like ribbons, floss, hair ties, and other household items that are small enough to fit in their mouths. The item prevents food from passing or binds up the intestines so that normal peristalsis is unable to move things through the kitten’s body. Hairballs can also cause a kitten to be unable to defecate.
- Very young kittens that are not yet weaned need to be stimulated to defecate. Mother cats usually do this by licking the rectum of their kittens. If a mother cat does not do this, a kitten is likely to get constipated, unless a human is regularly wiping the kitten’s rectum to stimulate it to pass stool.

Constipation is a term used to describe absent, infrequent or difficult passage of faeces .
When constipation occurs, faeces are retained longer than normal in the colon or rectum , and as a result the faeces tends to become dryer and harder , which may make the problem worse.
Animals with constipation may exhibit signs of pain when trying to pass faeces , and this may be accompanied by excessive straining to pass faeces. If there is prolonged constipation, the faeces may become severely impacted in the colon and rectum, and this is known as obstipation. With repeated bouts of constipation or obstipation the colon can become distended and lose its ability to contract and push faeces towards the rectum, a condition called megacolon .
What Causes Constipation In Cats Dehydration
Now its time for some borderline gross discussion of a cats physiological pooping mechanism.
After your kitty swallows his food it is digested in the stomach. Then it moves to the first part of the small intestine where its broken down even more by bile and pancreatic enzymes. The next part of the small intestine absorbs nutrients from the food which now looks something like gravy.
Once the remains of the food reach the large intestine, theres not much left besides indigestible fiber and water. The large intestine absorbs water from the food waste according to messages from the body based on how much water is needed at the time.
The last part of the large intestine is the rectum. Thats where the dried food waste collects until the cat has poops to get rid of it.

What Causes Constipation Why Is My Cat Not Pooping

Charlotte Still Cant Poop And Goes To The Vet
In the morning, she still had not pooped, so I made an appointment for that afternoon with the vet.
When I was in bed with Charlotte to comfort her, she sat on me. I could feel a bulge by her tail. I petted Violet for comparison to make sure I wasnt feeling bones.
The vet gave her a physical exam. His next step was an x-ray.
The x-Ray revealed a massive fecal plug. It was so large that it was physically impossible for Charlotte to pass the stool on her own.
The x-Ray also showed more poop that was backed up in her intestine. So she had to stay at the vet for a cleanout which included three enemas.
Weve had Charlotte for a few years, and we noticed that sometimes she walks funny. Its like her back legs had front legs dont move in sync. Kind of hard to explain.
So, I asked the vet if maybe her hips were not normal. He needed to do another x-ray from a different angle to find out.
He sent me home to await a call with an update as he planned to do the clean-out process after the last client of the day.
When he called, the update was good. He was able to remove the fecal plug , but he wanted her to spend the night.

Cats that are overweight are not active enough to keep their GI tract moving. Sometimes fatty deposits can be an issue related to your cats gut function as well. Making your cat lose some weight can help a lot with constipation. You can decrease your cats food intake, and you can try to get them to be active by playing with them every day. When Should You See A Veterinarian
