Can Maine Coon Cats Eat Salmon

My Maine Coon has been feeling ill of late and Id decided to try a little diet change to see if that might prompt her to eat something.

All cats are meant to love fish, so I thought about feeding her some salmon.

Only a little bit, but I did wonder if it was OK or acceptable to feed a Maine Coon some raw salmon.

The illness was entirely my fault, as I had accidentally got the kitten variant of her usual meal and it had goats milk in it.

As she had developed lactose intolerance this was making her ill.

I had to do some reading and understanding of whether a Maine Coon can be given salmon and sought to find some answers from more qualified people.

So, can Maine Coon cats eat salmon?

A Maine Coon can be fed raw salmon or other fish in small doses as many cats will love it as a treat. However, its not a substitute for a daily feeding regimen as an enzyme in raw fish destroys thiamine, an essential B vitamin. Cooked or poached salmon is preferable to raw fish meat.

Manufactured wet and dry food contains all the vitamins, nutrients, calories, and minerals that your cat needs.

Theres also the possibility that uncooked fish, as well as raw meats and uncooked eggs, will develop bacteria that may cause upset stomachs.

Fish seems like an occasional treat for a Maine Coon rather than something that should be part of their regular diet.

The reduction of thiamine caused by eating too much fish has serious repercussions, possibly even leading to a coma.

Bone And Muscle Development

As you may already know, cats are obligate carnivores. Which means that they can thrive exclusively on a diet of animal protein. Fortunately, salmon happens to be incredibly rich in protein. Therefore, supplementing your cats diet with salmon goes a long way in fulfilling the animals nutritional needs.

Protein plays numerous essential roles in a cats body, including facilitating the development of muscles and bones. Protein also escalates the wound healing process, and can be highly useful for cats that are struggling to heal from physical injury or recover from a surgical procedure.

Last but not least, protein-rich foods like salmon play a crucial role in weight management as they tend to increase the metabolic rate.

Another way protein can help to manage your cats weight is by inhibiting the functions of appetite-inducing hormones. So, mixing some salmon into your cats food will cause the cat to feel fuller for longer.

Health Benefits Of Salmon

Salmon is one of the most efficient foods for cats. Sometimes it is termed as a staple food for cats. There are high health benefits of eating salmon. It is a good source of protein for cats. The internal system of cats is more adapted for digesting meat and fish. So offering salmon to your cat will never be an issue for the cat owner. It is better to provide cooked salmon, and the amount should always be minimal. An excessive offering of any food type will harm the health of your cat.

Besides, there is a high amount of omega-three fatty acids present in salmon. The main benefit of these fatty acids is the reduction of obesity. The cat will be less prone to lethargy and loss of appetite when you will feed salmon. There is also vitamin B12 and B6 present in salmon. These items are efficient in fighting against anemia in cats.

For the proper metabolic reaction of protein inside a cats body, these vitamins usefulness is manifold. Theyre also useful minerals present in this food. Your cat will get selenium, niacin, and potassium in adequate quantity for this food. All of these are highly beneficial for maintaining proper skin and a healthy digestion system for cats. Salmon is always thought to be the most nutritional type of fish for all these health benefits.

Other Possible Problems With Salmon

Can Cats Eat Canned Salmon? (What About Salmon You Need To ...

There are some other possible issues with salmon as well. Not all the proposed issues have scientific backing, though.

Some claim that the bones in salmon are high in phosphorus and magnesium, which can cause kidney problems. However, there likely isnt enough to bother most cats. You only really need to worry if your cat has a history of kidney or urinary tract problems. We didnt find any scientific evidence to link a primarily fish diet with urinary problems.

Some cats may be allergic to fish, just like they may be allergic to any other type of protein. However, this isnt necessarily a reason to avoid fish. Cat allergies are rarely severe and usually take the form of skin irritation. If you notice these symptoms in your feline, you can switch their food to clear them up without much difficulty. You cant avoid all risks of allergies when it comes to feeding your feline.

The most common food allergens for cats are beef, fish, and chicken.

Vitamin K synthesis may be a problem for felines that consume a diet of mostly fish. Studies have found that kittens and nursing cats may become deficient if fed a diet containing mostly fish. However, most diets contain added vitamin K. The study suggests that cats should be supplemented at least 60 g of vitamin K in their cat food if it contains mainly fish. Many cat food companies do this today, so check the label before purchasing anything.

How Much Is Too Much

Moderation is the answer. So how much quantity is okay to feed cats?

Tiny portions just once every week seems like a healthy decision. Anything above this and your cat might get addicted. Dont give in even if your precious feline is trying every adorable trick in the book. Ignore your cats demands for their own good.

But when feeding, make sure cooked salmon is what you give. Cooked in the form of boiled, roasted, poached, or grilled. Raw salmon, cured salmon, or salmon processed using artificial additives should be avoided at all costs.

Just when the fish is cooked can you expect all the fatty acids and protein in it to benefit your little kitty.

Also important to note here is that just a fish diet is not the best idea for a cat. So include other foods too that you know your pet is going to benefit from.

A Note On Microplastics And Heavy Metals

A topic of microplastics found in daily foods is not new, with dozens of such news appearing daily. The situation is that it is no different when it comes to fish. In particular, a valid research proves that most fish contain microplastics, mostly as a result of ocean pollution. Besides that, such fish might also test positive for heavy metals like mercury and other toxins that can seriously affect cats and humans.

Because of ocean pollution, most fish also accumulate high content of mercury and other toxins. The higher up in the ocean food chain, the more of these toxins the fish is likely to contain as these toxins are never destroyed and only accumulate up the chain. So, a fish like a tuna, which eats other smaller fish, accumulates higher levels of these metals and toxins and should be eaten less frequently.

What Is The Best Way To Offer Salmon To Cats

When contemplating feeding any food to cats, theres always the dilemma as to whether you should offer the food to your feline friend raw or cooked. So, it comes as no surprise that many cat owners often wonder, can cats eat raw salmon?

Proponents of feeding raw foods to pets always argue that doing so allows the animal to enjoy all the nutritional elements that the food contains. Indeed, theres some truth to that notion, even when it comes to salmon for cats. Remember that weve just highlighted how cooking destroys the little taurine thats present in salmon.

Unfortunately, the risks of raw salmon for cats far outweigh the benefits. As with all seafood, raw salmon contains a host of bacteria and parasites that could lead to food poisoning in cats. The most common ones are salmonella and E. coli. Ingesting salmonella might cause salmonella poisoning, or medically known as salmonellosis.

Some of the symptoms of salmonellosis include

  • Vomiting,
  • Shock, and
  • Lethargy

Raw salmon is also discouraged for cats as it contains an enzyme known as thiaminase, which destroys thiamine. Therefore, raw salmon could lead to vitamin B1 deficiency in cats.
