A CT scan and a CAT scan are the same thing. CT stands for computerized tomography and CAT stands for computerized axial tomography.

The original name for this scan was an EMI scan, named after the company that created the technology. That evolved to CAT scan, and CT is simply a more modern, simplified version of this name.

How Should I Prepare

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your exam. You may need to change into a gown for the procedure.

Metal objects, including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures, and hairpins, may affect the CT images. Leave them at home or remove them prior to your exam. Some CT exams will require you to remove hearing aids and removable dental work. Women will need to remove bras containing metal underwire. You may need to remove any piercings, if possible.

Your doctor may instruct you to not eat or drink anything for a few hours before your exam if it will use contrast material. Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking and if you have any allergies. If you have a known allergy to contrast material, your doctor may prescribe medications to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction. To avoid unnecessary delays, contact your doctor well before the date of your exam.

Also tell your doctor about any recent illnesses or other medical conditions and whether you have a history of heart disease, asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, or thyroid problems. Any of these conditions may increase the risk of an adverse effect.

What Is Cat Scan

Computerised Axial Tomography or Computered Axial Tomography is known as CAT scan. The scanning procedure is painless, takes a moderate amount of time, and produces images using X-rays.

The images taken are of a series and are from various angles of the body. The process was used back in history and hence is less advanced.

CAT scans are ideally done at a radiology clinic. Patients are advised do not to eat or drink before the scanning and remove all the metal objects that can cause hindrance in the image production.

CT scans use a thin and narrow beam of X-rays that revolves around one part of the body the images produced to provide a cross-sectional picture of the parts. It consists of two-dimensional images like a slide of the part of the body.

CAT scans were also known as EMI. The name was based on the name of the equipment that was used for scanning purposes. The slightest movement can blur the image produced.

What Are Some Disadvantages Of Each Imaging Method

Because CTs use ionizing radiation, they could damage DNA and may very slightly raise the risk of developing cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that the extra risk of any one person developing a fatal cancer from a typical CT procedure is about 1 in 2,000. MRIs do not use ionizing radiation, so there is no issue of raising cancer risk. But they take much longer to complete than CTs. MRIs require the person to lie still within a closed space for about 20 to 40 minutes. If contrast media is used, there is a risk for allergic reaction to the media. Patients who are allergic to or sensitive to medications should notify their doctor.
