How We Chose The Brands And Varieties For Our Price Comparison

PetPlace cannot ensure that a food is right for your pet, and any changes to your pets diet should be discussed with a veterinarian.

The brands and varieties of foods listed here were chosen solely to be a representative sample of commonly available, popular pet foods. We selected one adult dry dog and dry cat kibble, one âpremiumâ dog and cat kibble, a canned dog and cat food, and puppy and kitten-specific dry food for our comparison.

The pet food market is divided into many different categories. Your petâs unique needs may be the deciding factor for where or what type of food you buy. We did not compare prices for the following categories of pet food:

  • Breed-Specific
  • Life Stage

What Do Customers Think Of Kirkland Cat Food

Whiskas Cat Food Costco

On Costco.com, the popular Maintenance Cat Chicken and Rice cat food has earned 500 reviews and a healthy 4.6 out of 5-star rating. Most reviewers praise Kirkland cat foods combination of price and quality.

A few complaints crop up in the review section and in threads around the web. Most negative reviews accuse various Kirkland formulas of making their cats sick, but I wasnt able to find any substance to these claims.

Another common complaint relates to the Costco-sized packages. Even happy customers feel overwhelmed by Kirklands cumbersome 25-lb sacks of dry food. One person on Reddit said theyd buy it if they could, but they didnt have room to store the bag.

Overall Is Kirkland Cat Food A Good Choice

Kirkland cat food isnt perfect. Like many other dry products, their recipes are moisture-depleted, carbohydrate-heavy, and relatively low in protein.

But compared to other comparably-priced products, Kirkland is an outstanding option. This brand offers superior ingredient quality with none of the potentially-harmful additives youll find in other budget foods.

No Vacancy No Problem

Regardless of where we fall in the to vax or not to vax debate, managing any amount of people seeking medical assistance in a pandemic presents a very real space issue. With the recommended six feet of distance between people ever present, mass vax sites needed enormous spaces to provide the service. Enter the now-vacant former sites of your local Sears and Kmart department stores. With so much square footage for lease, they served as the perfect remedy to solve the dilemmas and deliver the goods. For the longest, the story about both retailers has been that they would continue to slide, possibly into oblivion as the retail landscape carried on without them. Seeing them back in rotation, even under these dire circumstances, was such a welcome move that I breached my personal essay hiatus to write about them.

Where To Find The Cheapest Prices On Dog And Cat Food

Ever stop to figure out how much you spend on pet food each year? Any pet parent knows that kibble and chow can really add up. According to petfinder.com, the annual cost of feeding a dog or a cat ranges from about $120 to $500.

If you want to save money on pet food, it pays to shop around. A recent survey by Checkbook.org published by the Center for the Study of Services, an independent, nonprofit consumer organization found quite a price spread.

Checkbook shoppers compared prices for 11 popular dog and cat foods at a sample of pet stores, big-box discounters, grocery stores and warehouse clubs in seven metro areas: Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. They also visited several national online retailers. Because stores often carry different-size packages, Checkbook shopped for the lowest prices on a per-pound or per-ounce basis for each product.

The stores we shopped that offered the best prices charged about 40 percent less than the most expensive places, said Kevin Brasler, Checkbooks executive editor.

A table in the Checkbook report shows the prices found, along with their price comparison scores how that retailers prices compared to the average prices for all companies surveyed.

So who has the lowest prices?

  • Sams Clubs prices were 22 percent lower than the all-store average.
  • BJs Wholesale Club was 18 percent lower.
  • Walmart was 12 percent lower.
  • PetSmart was about 2 percent lower.

Where You Shop Matters When It Comes To Cost And Convenience

Costco! Dry Cat Food – 3 Types! Nature Domain, Maintenance Cat, & Nutra Nugget Cat Food

In 2021, there are more options than ever for buying pet food: online marketplaces, pet stores, big-box discounters, grocery stores, and warehouse clubs. According to Checkbook.org, an independent, non-profit consumer advocacy organization, membership warehouse clubs, such as BJâs, Samâs Club, and Costco, typically charge less for pet food. However, keep in mind that Costco only sells its own brand of dog food, so variety may be more limited even if it is cheaper.

Research from Zulily notes that younger pet owners shop online more often than at brick-and-mortar pet stores. These shoppers have made pet food the most common pet-related item purchased online, and make most of their purchases at popular vendors like Amazon and Chewy.

Dont Be Fooled By The Price Tag

Purina Friskies Pate Wet Cat Food Variety Pack, Salmon ...

We know that consumers believe that a product is of a higher quality if it costs more. This cognitive bias invites pet food manufacturers and creative marketing departments to develop all kinds of premium foods with âluxury ingredients,â as well as charge a higher price. Unfortunately, when it comes to pet food, you donât always get what you pay for.

There are no official standards for labeling a food or ingredient as premium or natural, so stick with the WSAVA, AKC, and your vetâs guidelines for which ingredients matter most. Take your vets advice, study ingredient lists carefully, and price shop to find the best combination of nutrition and value.

    Discussion Of The Primary Ingredients

When it comes to their ingredient lists, the Kirkland brand cat foods are relatively straightforward and easy to read. Theres nothing out of place or overly concerning. We really like that the number one ingredient is a protein source for each formula. That, and the fact that there are no wheat, soy, or corn products to be found.

There are other rice filler ingredients, though, including ground white rice and whole-grain brown rice. And when compared to other potential fillers and grains, the riceespecially the brown riceshows little cause for concern.

When it comes down to directly comparing the ingredient lists between the three, the Natures Domain variety is easily the top pick. With no grains at all, healthy complex carbohydrates are provided via sweet potatoes and potatoes. Theres also a whole bunch of other fruits and vegetables incorporated.

Kirkland Signature Natures Domain Salmon Meal And Sweet Potato Recipe Cat Food

Natures Domain is Kirklands grain-free offering and is best for cats who have allergies to wheat, soy, or corn. Instead of rice, Natures Domain provides complex carbs through the use of sweet potatoes and potatoes. It also has the highest protein percentage of the three Kirkland selections weighing in at 32%. While the most protein-rich of the Costco recipes, its still barely at industry standard.

This blend is also the most expensive of the three. And it just doesnt seem like a fully feasible option if youre looking for a premium cat food. There are other brands available that are a much better value for what youre seeking.

Is Pet Food Getting More Expensive

    The short answer is yes.

There are several reasons you might experience sticker shock when buying pet food:

  • Increase in pet owners since the start of the pandemic.
  • Increase in millennial pet owners. Younger pet owners are willing to spend more on their pets than previous generations, which has resulted in an increase in prices.
  • âPremiumization.â This is the pet food manufacturersâ response to millennial-driven demand for âpremiumâ foods.
  • Supply chain disruption related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • As a result of the pandemic and global industrial shutdowns, manufacturers now pay more for raw ingredients, manufacturing, shipping, and freight and pass increased costs on to consumers.

As long as the pandemic continues, there will be disruptions in the pet food supply chain.

We Save More Than $500 A Year Buying Our Pet Food From Costco

While a few cents saved on pet food may not seem like a big deal, it adds up.

We need to buy about one bag of dog food per month for our giant dog. Our cats go through one bag every two months. That’s 420 lbs of dog food and 108 lbs of cat food per year.

Using Costco online prices, that adds up to $659.16 on pet food per year. At Petco, it would cost us $959.40 per year.

That is a savings of $300.24 per year. But since we physically go to Costco and don’t order online, we save even more.

In store, our total spent yearly on pet food is about $442.20. Compared to online Costco prices, we’re saving over $200. Compared to Petco, it’s more than two times cheaper, saving us a little over $500 per year.

Honorable Mention: Was This A Big Mistake

When fans tuned in to the first episode only to witness a Peloton bike ceremoniously take out the character Mr. Big played by actor Chris Noth, they got big mad at the company. , the socials weighed in, and Peloton scrambled to fix their product placement nightmare by issuing a commercial featuring Noth and touting the benefits of exercise and the overall safety of Peloton bikes. Peloton later removed the ad after sexual assault allegations related to Noth surfaced.
