Pets are family members. Thats what drives our vision. Lost Our Home is dedicated to bridging the care gap between people who find themselves in crisis and the pets who often have no place to go during these challenging circumstances.

We are focused on finding long-term solutions and making long-lasting impact. Our mission is community-focused our approach, unique. We envision a caring community without barriers or divides between human crisis response and pet crisis response because we recognize that what impacts people directly impacts their pets.

Standard Veterinary Care For Kittens

There are certain veterinary treatments that every single kitten should receive, as follows:

Vaccines

  • FVRCP vaccine is the standard feline distemper vaccine. This is a preventative measure against feline rhinotracheitis virus, calicivirus, and panleukopenia. Kittens receive this vaccine at 6 weeks of age, and then two boosters 3-4 weeks apart.

  • Rabies vaccine is required by law and can be given to kittens at 8-10 weeks of age.

Flea Treatment

  • This is only necessary with kittens who have fleas or flea dirt.

  • If fleas are present in kittens under 6 weeks of age, chemical treatments can be very dangerous. I recommend washing the kitten with dish soap. Make a ring of soap around the kitten’s neck, then work the soap into the rest of the body with warm water. The ring around the neck will prevent fleas from migrating to the kitten’s head, and all of the fleas will be trapped in the soap and will die.

  • If fleas are present in kittens over 6 weeks of age, use a flea treatment that is designed for kittens and be sure that you have the proper dosage for the weight of the kitten. Overdosing a kitten on flea treatment can be fatal.

FIV/FeLV test

  • It is recommended that an FIV/FeLV test be done on any kittens that will be adopted out so that the adopter can know the cat’s status. That said, cats can and do live long and healthy lives even if they test positive, so do not let a positive result scare you. Learn more about FIV and FeLV here.

Contact Animal Rescue Organizations

Speak with representatives who work for your local animal rescue organizations. You can find a list of rescue organizations in your area through Adopt-a-Pet.com. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also has a list of local shelters with adoptable pets.

Rescue organizations usually have a network of volunteers who foster pets for them. They may be willing to care for your kitty, depending on your circumstances and how long you need your cat fostered. These organizations may require a small donation for their services, so check with one of their representatives to see what this donation might be.

Thank You For Considering Becoming A Foster Parent For Arf

Please watch the following video and read the information below. This will help provide a basic outline of the responsibilities associated with fostering.

Please realize that these animals are rescued in the true sense of the word and they need your commitment and care to see them through to their permanent homes.

  • Create a resume for your pet that includes a photo, favorite activities, certifications, and even a short adoption story. Extras could include a letter of reference from a current or most recent landlord, written proof that your dog has completed a training class, and a letter from the vet showing your pet is spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccines. This sample pet resume may spark ideas.
  • Invite landlords to meet your pet.
  • Be prepared and willing to pay a reasonable extra amount in rent or pay a refundable pet deposit.

Tip: Even if a landlord advertises no pets or has size or breed restrictions, some will make exceptions, especially when they are pet lovers themselves. It is worth a friendly ask over the phone or in person.

When signing a lease…

  • A lease that says no pets allowed should never be signed, even if other pets are seen on the property, or if a realtor, manager or landlord says its OK. The only words that matter are the ones written in the lease. If the lease contains “no pets” language, be sure that it is at least crossed out, if not replaced with language approving your pet, and both you and your landlord should initial the changes.
  • Pet deposits or monthly fees should be specified in writing in the lease. Prior to signing, a pet deposit or monthly pet fee can be discussed with the landlord and negotiated.
  • Keep a signed copy of the lease stored safely where it can be easily retrieved if needed.

  • Finding The Right Adopter

There are several things to consider when interviewing adopters. Here are some of the questions I ask myself when determining if a home is appropriate for a kitten:

    • Does this person have the time and energy to devote to an energetic kitten?

    • Does this person understand the 20+ year commitment they are about to make, and are they prepared to care for this kitten for the rest of her life?

    • Are there any small children or aggressive animals in the home that could hurt the kitten?

    • Does this person agree to treat the kitten humanely, including never ?

    • Will the kitten have a friend? If not, is the person willing to adopt a pair of littermates?

    • Is this person willing and able to get the kitten routine and emergency veterinary care?

    • Has this person given up an animal in the past, or are there any red flags that indicate they might give up an animal in the future?

If I Have My Own Animals Can I Foster Cats

Yes, but keep in mind that it’s always a health risk to expose your animal to other animals. The health risk is minimal if your animals are current on their vaccinations, maintains a healthy diet and lifestyle, and are not elderly or very young. If you or someone in your household is immune-compromised, consult your doctor before fostering since working or living with animals exposes humans to a group of zoonotic diseases.

How to Find a Home for a Foster Kitten

Everything! All we ask of our foster homes is to give love, patience, and understanding to their foster pet. In an effort to make fostering as easy as possible and ensure that our foster homes have everything they need, we provide the following:

    • Crate
    • Free doggie dog walking if you have longer work days
    • Temporary foster relief if you need to go out of town while fostering

As with our adoptive homes, we always try to the best of our ability to match the foster animal to the foster home. We will always take into consideration you, your lifestyle, and other members of your household, before asking you to foster a specific pet. All dogs and cats are temperament tested prior to heading to your home so we typically have a good idea of each animals personality and needs.

Can I Foster An Animal That I Have Surrendered To Paws

In many situations, yes. All PAWS foster families, including those who have rescued or previously owned the pet they wish to foster, must agree to all PAWS foster home policies and protocol. This includes but is not limited to: bringing the animal to PAWS for regular public showings, keeping the dog/cat indoors as a member of the family, and deferring all medical, behavioral, and placement decisions to PAWS. Animals are considered PAWS foster animals after the owner/rescuer has completed in-person surrender paperwork with an intake volunteer or PAWS staff member.

    The Rewards Of Fostering

As a foster home, you are helping an animal learn to trust and bond with people. For many of our animals bonding has not occurred before. Just think what it means to an animal to go from hunger, pain and neglect to a new life of comfort, safety and attention.

Youll be surprised at how grateful they are.

They cant wait to give you all the love they have. If you find that the pet chosen for you doesnt suit your home, thats not a problem. You can return the pet to us at any time and for any reason. We only ask that you give us as much notice as possible so we can arrange for an alternative home.

    Getting Them On A Routine

Get the kittens on a routine. Every few hours, you should be stimulating them, feeding them, and showing them their comfy spot so they can safely sleep. As they get older, you can factor in some play time. My recommended schedule is as follows:

Kittens 0-1 weeks: bottle feeding/stimulating every 2 hours

Kittens 1-2 weeks: bottle feeding/stimulating every 2-3 hours

Kittens 2-3 weeks: bottle feeding/stimulating every 3 hours

Kittens 3-4 weeks: bottle feeding/stimulating every 4 hours

Kittens 4-5 weeks: weaning and beginning to use bathroom on their own – feeding every 5-6 hours

Kittens 5-6 weeks: weaning, using litter box – feeding every 6-8 hours

Kittens 6-8 weeks: weaned, using litter box – feeding every 8 hours

Kittens 8 weeks +: make a spay appointment and adopt them out!

Temporary Changes To Our Fostering Process Due To Covid19

Please be aware that this new process will only be possible for certain animals in our care. As this is a new process and some of our centres and branches are short staffed at this time. Please bear with us if there is a delay in responding to your enquiry. We will be in touch as soon as possible.

Step 1 – Contact your local RSPCA centre or branch preferably by email.

Step 2 – The centre will provide more information about their fostering process and if you wish to proceed they will ask you to complete a foster application form.

Step 3 – you will receive a phone call from the rehoming centre and the foster application process will be completed via phone and email. You will be asked to provide photos or video of your home and you will need to have a secure, private garden/ yard .

Step 4 – You will be able to collect your foster pet, by appointment, from the rehoming centre.

Step 5 – you will receive ongoing support from the rehoming centre and a visit will be carried out when current movement and other restrictions have been lifted.

The health and safety of potential adopters, fosterers, our staff and volunteers is of utmost importance to us. Unfortunately we can’t foster animals to homes where a member of the household is showing symptoms of or has a confirmed case of Covid-19. Or has been identified as clinically extremely vulnerable or is shielding.

    Behavior Foster Parent Dogs

While many of our dogs are off to their new homes within a matter of days, some need more time and patience. We often have rambunctious canines that are struggling in the shelter and need a structured home environment. Most behavior fosters will have their foster dog in their home for 2-4 weeks.

Typical Behavior Foster Parent duties include:

    • Having experience in positive reinforcement dog training
    • Offering appropriate exercise and socialization
    • Having experience with:
    • Highly exuberant dogs: dogs with lots of energy may also jump and mouth either trying to play or get attention.
    • Dogs with separation anxiety: dogs with separation anxiety may bark or howl, be destructive, and urinate and/or defecate in the house when left alone.
    • Dogs with possessive behavior: dogs with possessive behavior may show teeth, growl and snap when things that are important to the dog are touched or approached.
  • Working with large and sometimes rowdy dogs
  • Having patience to deal with housebreaking mishaps or chewing incidents
  • Understanding that many of our dogs would do best in a home without other pets or young children
  • Working with suggestions from ARL staff on how to set your foster dog up for success
