How To Make My Cat’s Litter Box Smell Better

Can You Flush Non

HOW TO HAVE A SMELL FREE LITTER BOX » sharing my secret to a stink-free home with multiple cats

If you have clumping litter you cant flush it. But, what about non-clumping litter?

You can flush some non-clumping litter. These types usually make it very clear if you can. Because this is usually their way of marketing it to you. In general, they are usually made from corn, wood, pine, or even wheat. They claim they are more eco-friendly.

You have learned that some non-clumping litter can be flushed, but are some types safer than others?

Cant Flush Try A Litter Odour Control Pail

If you cant or would rather not flush your litter down the toilet, but you also find it difficult to take the litter out immediately after scooping, Id advise getting your hands on a cat litter odour control bin, like the Litter Genie Plus. This particular pail seems to have so many glowing reviews from pet owners, Id find it hard to recommend an alternative. Yes, they recommend you buy refills, but if thats out of your budget, you can always do what this reviewer did make hacked versions out of cheap 8 gallon plastic bags yourself.

Does The Placement Of The Litter Box Matter

No one wants a litter box sitting in the middle of the kitchen, or in the middle of anything for that matter! We like to tuck our litter boxes in the laundry room, or in an unused basement bathroom, and in corner that gets little human foot traffic.

But these are almost always the worst spots for a litter box in terms of odor control. Litter boxes need to be placed where there is air movement to keep odors from stagnating.

Your cats preference also needs to be taken into consideration with regard to placement of the litter box. Litter boxes need to be put where the cats like to go. Just because you’d like the box to be in the attic, doesn’t mean your cat will be comfortable going there to toilet.

Most cats enjoy well-lit, comfortable , quiet , places with constant access to toilet.

If you have a multi-cat household, the box needs to be placed where a cat using the litter box can see other cats coming and going.

Tools To Get The Job Done

Whether your scoop is a solid metal spoon or slotted plastic, it must be cleaned at least as often as the box, more if needed. Do not shake the scoop while using it. The litter that gets shaken off is ineffective at absorbing odor and should just be disposed of.

Place a textured mat underneath or near the box so kitty won’t track litter everywhere. If that happens anyway, vacuum regularly. If the sound of the vacuum scares Kitty, invest in a Roomba. Not only is it not loud enough to disturb Kitty, but she might like having a new riding toy.

How Big The Litter Box Should Be

Luuup Litter Box 3 Sifting Tray System

This is perhaps the most important thing to consider when choosing your cats litter boxes. Cramped quarters are no fun for anyone!

Make sure the litter boxes you choose for your cat are large enough for your cat to fit inside comfortably, with some room to spare.

They should have ample space to move and dig around in it, without having to step out. There should be plenty of space for them to easily avoid any deposits that are still around from earlier visits.

As a general rule, the correct size litter box should be at least as long as your cat, from their nose to the tip of their tail , and its width should be at least as wide as your cat is long .

Preventive Vet kitty, Mazel, loves using the XL Tidy Cat Breeze litter box system and his mom loves that it’s easy to clean and controls odor really well.

It’s not the least expensive option, but it truly does keep bad smells at bay and there’s no messy litter getting everywhere.

At most, a few pellets make their way out of the box, but they’re easy enough to toss in the garbage, or if they’re clean, right back into the box.

Use a good enzymatic cleaner to take care of any potty accidents if your cat misses the box . A good, thorough cleaning will eliminate the smell, prevent odors from developing over time, and prevent your cat from going outside of their boxes in the future.

An effective cleaner, like this enzymatic and bio-based cleaner by Unique, works to neutralize the odor. If your cat is going outside their box, like on your living room carpet, then getting the smell out effectively can help prevent them from sniffing it out and choosing that same potty spot again.

Training Your Cat To Go Outside

This is a great option which solves your problem completely but requires training of the cat. You can start by moving the litter box closer and closer to the door. Install a pet door and keep your litter box outside the door. Start adding dirt and leaves in the litter. Move the litter box 2 to 3 feet at a time every couple of days and ensure your cat is eliminating in the litter box. Once you get to the designated area of eliminating start putting the litter on the ground for the cat to get the hint. If you be patient throughout the process, it is likely that your cat will adapt to eliminating outside.
