No. There is no current Friskies cat food recall.
Since at least 2018, internet rumors have been circulating that certain cans of Friskies cat food, usually paté varieties, are contaminated and making cats sick.
Some people even claim their cats or kittens have died as a result of eating the food.
These rumors cite specific supposed batch numbers usually the numbers are stated as being 1157, 1159 and 1161. Sometimes batch codes are said to be double-stamped or to have a pink dot or a red dot.
Heres an example of a photo that was shared on Facebook:
Many recent consumer reviews on ConsumerAffairs.com have alleged serious problems, and public petitions have been started online to make Purina recall the tainted Friskies cat food.
An anti-Friskies Facebook page has been posting regular alerts, calling the products toxic waste and claiming that Purina is not doing anything but taking the money and getting the cats sick.

Company History: Friskies Used To Be A Dog Food
In the early 1930s, Friskies began as a dry dog food.
It was sold in Friskies Meal and Friskies Cubes forms, with the latter being described as like serving your dog a 6-course dinner in one dish, with meat, liver, milk, fish, vegetable and chicken in crunchy, bite-sized chunks.
In the early 1950s, a canned version of Friskies Dog Food hit store shelves, and it was the worlds first canned dog food. The flavor secret, at least according to one advertisement in LIFE magazine, was lean red horse meat, and lots of it.
After years of soaring sales of Friskies Dog Food, the Carnation Company finally began producing a cat food in 1956. It was originally called Little Friskies for Cats.
It, too, was a historic launch Friskies was said to be the first-ever dry pet food made specifically for cats. Even the fussiest cats love Friskies, ads boasted.
A Hugely Successful Cat Food Brand
Innovations by Friskies over the years included:
- Friskies Buffet, sold in single-serving cans starting in 1967
- Friskies Bright Eyes, one of the first gourmet cat foods, launched in the early 1970s
- Friskies Kitten Formula, a calcium-fortified dry food in a milk carton package, rolled out in 1988
- Grumpy Cat, the internet-famous cat with a permafrown, became the official spokescat for the Friskies brand in 2013

What Do Customers Think Of Friskies Cat Food
Customers are, for the most part, happy with Friskies. People spend hundreds of millions of dollars on it every year. As one of the oldest cat food brands still on the market, Friskies has become a cat food staple. Many have been feeding it to their cats for decadesa tradition passed down from their parents and grandparents.
Not everyone is happy with Friskies cat food, however. On Consumer Affairs, for example, the brand has an overall satisfaction rating of just over 1 out of 5 stars. Complaints range from texture concerns to non-food objects found in cans to reports of illness.
Multiple customers have found pieces of plastic in cans of Friskies food. Between October and December of 2018, numerous reviewers said their cats started to refuse their Friskies food. Friskies says there were no reformulations around the time these reports started popping up. Its unclear whether or not the incidents were connected.
Is There A Nationwide Shortage Of Cat Food
The reports of a canned cat food shortage aren’t new and pet owners have been complaining about it for months. As with other food product shortages, the global supply chain woes are at play in the canned cat food shortage as well.
Also, a shortage of packaging materials has made things complicated for canned cat food companies. The driver shortage means that when companies produce products, it takes longer than usual to reach retail stores. Finally, as we saw in the initial days of the COVID-19 pandemic, people seem to be hoarding essential supplies.
While thats the usual consumer behavior, especially because a lot of people couldn’t during the lockdowns in 2020, it puts pressure on the food shortage situation.
This cat food shortage is getting insanely old. Its been MONTHS of searching and searching for food for my fur kids. And of course my kids have to be picky as hell so I cant get anything else. And its not just wet food, its dry as well. Was hoping once supply chain

Curious About Other Friskies Flavours
Remember, changes in your cats diet should be made gradually to allow your cat to become accustomed to a new food. Substitute small amounts of the new food for the old food, gradually increasing the amount of the new food while decreasing the old food, over a period of 7 – 10 days. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets – something both you and your cat can appreciate.
Provide adequate fresh water in a clean container daily.

Was Your Pet Food Recalled
Nestlé Purina PetCare says it places an emphasis on quality and safety throughout every step of food production, from sourcing of ingredients to processing and distribution.
At Purina, we always put the pet first, and we ensure the safety and quality of our food through our people, technology, scale and rigorous internal and external standards, the company said in a 2016 shared value report.
13 Oz. Cans of Friskies Discontinued
As of late 2019, the 13 oz. size cans of Friskies have been discontinued. The cat food is still available for sale in 5.5 oz. cans.

Purina Makes Friskies Wet Cat Food
Friskies wet cat food is made by Purina, which is owned by Nestle, the Switzerland-based global food and beverage company. In October 2021, while announcing the sales data for the first nine months of 2021, Nestle said that Purina PetCare sales showed strong momentum during the period and that sales were up in double digits.
However, Purina talked about supply chain issues in North America and said that Purina PetCare sales rose in the high single digits. The growth rate in North America was lower than other major regions, which saw strong double-digit growth.
I’m told there is a national shortage of pet food, brought about by lockdown and people deciding to get a pet dog or cat….When and if things return to anything like normality, the pet homes and shelters are going to be swamped with discarded pets, because of the commitment.

Overall Is Friskies A Good Choice
Friskies isnt a brand wed recommend. Its selling points are not ingredient quality or nutritional integrity. It is, however, one of the most affordable brands available.
If you choose to buy Friskies, avoid their dry recipes. Friskies dry cat food is packed with low-value plant ingredients like corn gluten meal and soybean meal and rely on vaguely-named animal by-products instead of named meats.
Instead, opt for Friskies wet cat food. Their wet recipes contain some undesirable additives, including carrageenan, artificial colors, and artificial flavors, but are meat-rich with minimal carbohydrate content.
Stick to the patés to avoid starchy thickeners. Read the ingredient lists carefully to minimize harmful additivessome Friskies foods contain artificial colors and others dont.
