With the holidays in full swing, SCC has Santa Photo opportunities available at various locations throughout southwest Washington and the proceeds go right back to the animals in their care. Their annual fundraiser, Great Balls of Fur, takes places every May at Royal Oaks Country Club. 2019 marked the 17th anniversary of this popular event which includes a dinner, a live and silent auction, and games throughout the evening.

Nike Animal Rescue Foundation is a 501 non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to providing assistance to cats and dogs in need. Never A Shortage Of Pets In Need
Currently, SCC has 172 animals in need of homes. About 100 of those are kittens brought in during kitten season, which begins in May. According to Locey, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington prefers not to deal with pregnant animals so SCC works closely with them in these situations.
We have one foster mama who specializes in bottle babies. Shes a registered nurse. She carries a pouch around her neck with a baby bottle and is constantly feeding kittens, Locey said.
In 2018, SCC placed 242 cats, 79 dogs, two guinea pigs and one rabbit. Because foster coordinators and fosters have been more proactive about finding homes for their wards in 2019, they have adopted out 269 cats, 133 dogs and one pig so far this year.
Locey explained that animals come to SCC for a myriad of reasons. Two common examples are that people move and are unable to take their pet with them because its a rental situation, they no longer have the land for a large breed dog, or a family member passes away and no one in the family has the ability to, or interest in, taking on the responsibility of a pet.

Growing In Service & Reputation
Since its inception, SCC has grown to serve all of Clark County and has moved into the Portland metro area, Skamania County, Cowlitz County and even King County. Locey shared that quite a few Seattle-area residents have reached out to SCC with adoption and foster requests in the last two years, thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations and its reputation for investing in good veterinary care and high-quality volunteers who help get pets ready for transition into daily family life.
With a volunteer base that exceeds 300, SCC uses the skill sets of its dedicated team for fundraising establishing animal resource connections, such as donations for animal food, places to set up Adoption Day events and veterinarians looking to partner with SCC and continuing to grow its foster home network. Much of the heavy lifting, however, is done by the five-person board of directors and the foster coordinator.
So admirable is SCCs mission that Locey came to SCC to adopt and is now its president. Now in her early 70s, Locey is a large-breed dog fan who, back then, had just lost a dog. When she reached out to SCC, she learned they needed fosters. Today, she is the proud dog mom of Steve, a 136-pound Newfoundland-Alaskan malamute mix who has a soft spot for Pomeranians and Chihuahuas.

This insight helps us match the right cat with the right adopter making the cat adoption a win-win for everyone involved. While in our care the cats and kittens are given the best food and medical treatment possible. When adopted, the new owner is given a packet containing medical records and information on how to care for the cat or kitten. More importantly, Furry Friends is always there as a support system for the new owner.

Your adoption fee helps cover the medical and housing costs of the cat or kitten which can cost Furry Friends a minimum of $300 to $500 per kitty.
Upon receipt of your adoption application we will check your references prior to an adoption. We advocate all adopters to keep their cats indoors only and not to declaw their new furry buddies.

For more than 25 years, Second Chance Companions has rehomed dogs and cats. In recent years, the local nonprofit organization has come to the rescue once again with great success adopting out senior animals.
I think people are beginning to realize that older pets are valuable, said LaVerne Locey, president of Second Chance Companions. They dont chew up your home. Theyre house-trained. Theyre veteran pets.
In 1993, a group of animal lovers sought to fill a need for a no-kill animal shelter of sorts that would serve the Battle Ground area. As community awareness grew of rehoming rather than euthanizing, the team began forming connections throughout southwest Washington. Rather than maintain a shelter building, team members place all pets in a temporary living situation via foster homes until their forever homes can be identified.
