How Does Lantus Work

Lantus is a synthetic or analoginsulin manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis. Like other kinds of injectableinsulin, it provides the body with the hormones necessary to help lowerthe amount of glucose in the bloodstream. Lantus releases insulinslowly in the body, which helps minimize the number of injectionsrequired to maintain healthy glucose levels. Its long-lasting effectshave helped make it an increasingly preferred method for managingfeline diabetes, since cats metabolize insulin around twice as fast aspeople. Lantus typically remains active in cats for around 12 hours perdose, which may require owners to administer the medicine twice a day.Owners should always consult with a veterinarian regarding specificdosage recommendations and instructions. Although the product is notFDA-approved for feline use, it may be available by prescription from aveterinarian.

Unlike some older insulin products, the active ingredient in Lantus, glargine insulin, is not derived from animal-based materials. The clearliquid medication is often prescribed in 10 mL vials intended for usewith syringes. Lantus is also available in 3 mL doses contained insideinsulin pen cartridges. These reusable devices feature disposableneedles and are sometimes favored for their size and convenience.

Pens that deliver half units include the NovoPen 3 Demi and NovoPen Junior , and the NovoPen Echo has the special feature of a digital dial and memory. How Will My Cat Respond To Regular Insulin Injections

Typically, cats tolerate the injections very well and do not find them to be uncomfortable. This is due to the tiny width of the insulin needles and the fact that they have a large amount of loose skin which is not painful to inject under . This comfort can be maintained in the long term by varying the site of injection across different areas of the back. This prevents one area of skin from being consistently pierced, which eventually would lead to the development of inflammation. Anywhere that you can find loose skin is an acceptable place to inject.

How Is Insulin Administered To Cats With Diabetes Mellitus

In cases of standard diabetes where the patient is otherwise relatively healthy, cats will generally be started on insulin injections immediately once the diagnosis is made. Because they break down insulin relatively quickly, almost all cats will require injections twice a day . The injections are usually administered under the skin of the back using either a syringe and very fine needle or a purpose-designed insulin pen. A crib sheet on insulin administration is also available within the fact sheet section of the Davies Veterinary Specialists website.

Insulin is typically started at a low dose, which will often need to be gradually increased based on response. The low dose is used because overdosing of insulin is much more dangerous than underdosing, but the consequence is that it can take some weeks to reach the optimal dosage by incremental increase. Insulin doses should not be changed too regularly and doses should never be altered without discussion with a vet.

Diabetic Cat Owners Using Lantus / Glargine

How I adore our ADW clients. Not only are you smart enough to shop around to find great pricing for your diabetic pet supplies, you help keep me abreast of what is going on around the country and how other practitioners approach diabetes management.

Last week after one of my insulin pen article went out, George wrote me and told me how he saves a significant amount of money on his cats glargine insulin. I was impressed!

Ive long thought that busy multi-doctor veterinary practices should order the lantus pens and sell them individually to diabetic cat owners. They have only 3 cc of insulin in them compared to the standard 10 cc vials, much of which goes wasted for a small critter like a putty tat. It hadnt crossed my mind that some pharmacies might sell pens individually nor that there was a coupon available for glargine.

George found a 50 percent off coupon for glargine solostar pens. He uses a 3/10 cc u-100 insulin syringe with a 5/16 inch long needle to draw up the glargine directly from the pen. He noted that he does not inject air into the pen as he would with a vial of glargine. After the coupon he is spending only $25 per 3cc of glargine insulin, which is a pretty darned good price.

George told me that not all pharmacies will break open a box and sell the pens individually, but some will. Its worth a bit of calling around in your own home town to see if one of your local pharmacies will help you.

Before You Get Started:

  • Wash your hands
  • Make sure the insulin is clear and colorless. Do not use it if it is cloudy or if you see particles throw it away
  • Do not mix or dilute Lantus® with any other insulin or solution. It will not work as intended, and you may lose blood sugar control
  • Do not share needles, insulin pens, or syringes with others
  • Do NOT reuse needles. Always use a new syringe

Are There Any Other Alternatives To Lantus

There are a couple of other options to Lantus or its biosimilar Basaglar. While the cash prices of these may not significantly less expensive, depending on your insurance coverage, some alternative insulins might be more affordable.

  • Toujeois another insulin glargine injection and has been found to be just as safe and effective as Lantus. The difference? Toujeo is more concentrated at 300 units/ml and is only approved to treat patients 18 years or older. However, Toujeo is more expensive than Lantus as cash prices average around $347 for a 30-day supply.

  • Levemir has a different active ingredient than Lantus, insulin detemir, but is similar in that is provides all-day blood sugar control. Levemir is actually more expensive than Lantus, as cash prices average around $497, but if your insurance covers it over Lantus, it may be more affordable for you.

Susan Gottlieb,1,2 Jacquie Rand2 1The Cat Clinic, Brisbane, QLD, Australia 2School of Veterinary Science, The University of Queensland, Gatton, QLD, Australia Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrine disease in cats. While type 2 diabetes is the most common form seen in cats, other underlying causes may contribute to insulin resistance. Guidelines for diagnosis vary and often do not take into account prediabetic cats. The goals of treatment are to maximize the chance of remission, while minimizing the risks of hypoglycemia. This article presents a further overview of current treatment and monitoring recommendations for diabetic cats. Keywords: diabetes mellitus, glucose tolerance, diabetic remission, gluconeogenesis, feline, cats

Diabetes in cats

Diabetes is caused by insufficient insulin secretion from pancreatic cells resulting in persistent hyperglycemia. Current classification in veterinary medicine is based on human diabetes and the mechanism involved in pancreatic -cell failure. There are four types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, gestational, and other specific types.9 Type 1 diabetes is characterized by immune-mediated destruction of cells leading to an absolute insulin deficiency and it is extremely rare in cats.10,11 Gestational has not been reported in cats but reported in dogs.12

Dont Forget The Needles

Lantus pen diabetic cat

Once youve picked your pen, youll need a needle for the tip. Pen needles screw onto the top of an insulin pen. Its good practice to change your needle after each injection or at least once daily. Fresh, sharp needles mean shots that are less painful.

Most brands of pen needles will fit any of the insulin pens. Pen needles come in different lengthsbetween 4 and 12 mmand gauges .

The Pen Primes Properly But It Is Difficult To Press The Release Trigger During Injection

This usually means that insulin is being injected into the skin or other tissues rather than the subcutaneous space. Solution: review the owners injection technique. It is also recommended that the pen needles are checked. Most brands of pen needles will fit onto most insulin dosing pens and owners might obtain needles from sources other than their veterinarian. Diabetic people typically use much shorter needles than are recommended for dogs and cats . These shorter needles will sometimes not pass all the way through the skin, resulting in intradermal administration of insulin.

Does Lantus Have A Generic

Although Sanofis patent on Lantus expired in 2015, as of December 2017, Lantus still does not have a generic equivalent. But there is good newsLantus does have a biosimilar, Basaglar.

Whats a biosimilar you ask? Well, without getting too technical, biosimilars are basically the generic product of a biologic. But since these medications are made out of living cells, they are slightly different and arent deemed therapeutically equivalent, or interchangeable, by the FDA. Tips From Owners About How To Obtain Urine Samples From Their Diabetic Cats

Lantus SoloStar Pens (Insulin Glargine) 100 IU/ml, 5 x

Glenn:

The hardest thing for me was getting Eds urine sample until I found an amazing product at the local Pet Store. It is a Cat Litter Bin with a difference. It is made in Italy & called: Furba Toilette per gatti. You can find it at the link below.

This product is so good that Im sure you would have told me about it if you had been aware of it, so Im letting you know so that other cat-owners can benefit as well.

This litter bin consists of 3 plastic bases shaped like baby-baths that stack one on top of the other. It also has a rim around the top that clips on & holds the base-sections in place.

The top layer has a grill in it. The other two are simply catchments like a bucket. And these two are exactly the same.

The product has been designed in such a way that as the litter clumps, the clumps stay up the top and the urine is caught in the catchment below. So you lift the top grill and the used catchment away from the unused catchment . From there, you sieve the good litter into your new catchment, tip out the clumps & faeces and pop your clean grill back on top.

So for an investment of $39.00 I have saved myself a lot of hassle.
