Can You Use Neosporin On Cats

This medication is for use on the skin only. Follow all directions on the product package or use as directed by your doctor. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Clean and dry the affected skin area. If you are using the ointment, wash your hands first. Then apply a small amount of medication in a thin layer on the skin and rub in gently, usually 1 to 3 times a day. Wash your hands after applying the ointment. If you are using the spray, shake the container well before using, then spray a small amount on the affected area as directed, usually 1 to 3 times a day. You may cover small treatment areas with a sterile bandage.

Do not use large amounts of this medication or apply this more often or for a longer period than directed. Your condition will not clear faster, but the risk of side effects may be increased. Do not use this product for longer than 1 week unless directed by your doctor. Do not use this medication on irritated skin in a child’s diaper area unless directed by the doctor. After applying the medication to the diaper area, do not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants.

Avoid getting this medication in your eyes or inside the nose or mouth. If this occurs, wipe off the medication and rinse thoroughly with water.

Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day.

How To Apply Neosporin On Dogs

After consulting your vet, you can apply Neosporin to your dog the same way you would on a human. Carefully cleanse the affected area by rinsing it with warm water and a drop of soap, if necessary. After gently patting dry, apply a thin layer of the antibacterial ointment over the affected area and then cover it with a pet-approved bandage. Try the Nurtured Pets Anti-Lick Strip Prevent Bandage , Nutri-Vet Bitter Pet Bandage , or PawFlex MediMitt Disposable Dog Bandage . Apply the bandage securely but not so tightly that it cuts off circulation, which would be very uncomfortable for your dog and may prompt your dog to try to get the bandage off.

The bandage will prevent additional dirt or bacteria from entering the wound. It will also prevent your pet from licking the ointment away, which theyll be very eager to do! You can also have your pet wear a cone for a few days to prevent any excessive licking. Change the bandage once or twice a day and you should see improvement within 24 to 72 hours.

What To Know Before Using Neosporin On Your Dog

With abrasions , you should first clean and flush the wound with soap and water, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Your veterinarian should see all puncture or penetrating wounds, including dog bites, as soon as possible.

Neosporin is comprised of three different antibiotics: bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B. Together, they work to kill bacteria on the skin and prevent topical infection. Dr. Rachel Barrack, a licensed veterinarian, certified in both veterinary acupuncture and Chinese herbology with Animal Acupuncture in New York City, points out that Neosporin has been formulated for people and is not necessarily safe for use on dogs.

Bacitracin has been deemed safe for use on animals, as has polymyxin B. However, neomycin has been linked to loss of hearing, she says. This was primarily shown with intravenous use, but it is recommended that you do not administer neomycin topically to your dog without first consulting your vet.

Because Neosporin is topical and applied directly onto the skin, theres always a chance that your dog could have an allergic reaction. Its a good idea to administer a small patch test first. The best way to do this is by picking a small area of skin and applying a tiny dab of Neosporin, then monitor the area to see if your dog develops a mild rash, redness, or hives.

Is Neosporin Safe For Dogs Or Not

Triple Antibiotic Ointment

Neosporin is fine to use on your dog for very minor cuts and scrapes it can help prevent bacterial infections and can keep your dog from scratching, licking, or biting at the wound site while it heals. Make sure he or she doesnt lick off the ointment after youve applied it, and your pup should be fine.

Remember: Its possible for your dog to be allergic to Neosporin or its ingredients. Neosporin is not appropriate to use on other types of skin problems, like hot spots, rashes, or skin infections. And at the end of the day, Neosporin is a product made for humans, not dogs its not necessary to use on your canine friend at all.

If your dog suffers any kind of wound that is more serious than a small scrape or cut, contact your veterinarian for help. Its always best to play it safe.

Always Use A Cone Of Shame

Youll need to fit your cat with a so-called cone of shame or Elizabethan collar, especially if you plan on using a human-grade antibiotic ointment on a cut or a scratch that your feline friend has sustained.

It is extremely important to prevent the cat from ingesting the product as you dont know what reactions it is going to cause.

I have personally gone through an awful experience with a moisturizer, where I accidentally dropped a small amount on my cats fur, she of course, groomed herself right away and started foaming at the mouth. And that happened with moisturizer, not with a medical product made for humans!

You might say that you can also use a band-aid, and you can, but the likelihood of your cat ripping it off while grooming herself is extremely high. A well-fitted Elizabethan collar is better.

How To Give Your Cat Eye Ointments

Ointments are notoriously more difficult to give to cats than drops, so be prepared to ask for help with administration.

With ointments, the vet may tell you to place a small strip of the ointment into the eye a prescribed number of times per day.

When administering ointments, you can use the same process as for drops, but your focus should be on lowering the lower lid. It can be helpful to think of yourself as placing the medication within the lower eyelid. If you do this, the medication will distribute onto the eye when the cat blinks. However, if your cat is not tolerating this, it’s better to get the medication somewhere on the cornea than nowhere at all.

What Is Bnp Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment:

Bacitracin, Neomycin and Polymyxin B are antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. Each gram contains Bacitracin Zinc 400 units, Neomycin Sulfate 5 mg , Polymyxin B Sulfate 10,000 units in a base of white petrolatum and Mineral Oil. The three antibiotics provide a broad spectrum of activity against the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria commonly involved in superficial infections of the eyelid and conjunctiva. Bacitracin is effective against gram-positive bacteria including hemolytic and nonhemolytic streptococci and staphylococci. Resistant strains rarely develop. Neomycin is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including staphylococci, Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae and many strains of Proteus and Pseudomonas. Polymyxin B is bactericidal to gram-negative bacteria especially Pseudomonas. No resistant strains have been found to develop in vivo.

Are There Alternatives To Neosporin

Triple Antibiotic Ointment For Cats

Unfortunately, there is no over-the-counter alternative to Neosporin in cats. However, there are veterinary-specific ointments that can be prescribed in place of Neosporin. If your cat has a minor wound, schedule an appointment for your cat to be looked over by your vet. They can prescribe the right treatment for your cat’s wound. In the event that your vet discovers that your cat’s minor wound isn’t so minor after all, you’re already in the right place to have it addressed.

Neosporin Side Effects In Dogs

If using Neosporin, it is important to look for potential side effects. The two more common side effects are contact dermatitis or an allergic reaction.

Contact dermatitis occurs as local inflammation at the site where you applied the ointment. Signs of an allergic reaction may include red, scaly, or itchy skin. If either of these symptoms occur, gently wipe away any residual ointment with a warm washcloth and discontinue Neosporin use. If the irritation does not improve in 24 hours, see your veterinarian for further care.

Also, while not an immediate issue for your dog, increased bacterial resistance is a growing concern with widespread use of topical antibiotics . For that reason alone, its a good idea to consult your vet if using an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin is even necessary.

More severe side effects are rare but may include:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea if ingested
  • Irritation if used in the eyes
  • Hearing loss, infection, and irritation if used in the ears
  • Development of resistant infections

Do not use Neosporin in combination with other topical medications unless your veterinarian directs you to. Because Neosporin is only used externally, there is little risk of it interacting with any medications your pet takes by mouth.

What Should I Do If My Cats Wound Is Bleeding

Initially, attempt to stop the bleeding by applying direct pressure to the wound with an absorbent dressing, such as dry gauze, followed by a layer of bandage material or a clean, dry cloth. This will protect the wound during transport to the veterinary clinic and prevent any further contamination of the injury.

If possible, try to raise the affected area above the level of the heart. This will help reduce the flow of blood to the bleeding area. Do not apply ointments, creams, disinfectants, or any other chemicals to the wound , as they can interfere with healing.

The wound may be bandaged to protect it from further contamination, or to prevent your cat from excessively licking it. Daily bandage changes, as demonstrated by your veterinarian, may be required if there is a lot of discharge from the wound.

Using On Eyes Or Skin

For skin, use triple antibiotic ointment or cream. For eyes, use triple antibiotic ophthalmic ointment only, no cream. The word ophthalmic refers to the eye. With use of triple antibiotics, your cat’s wound or eyes should start looking better within 48 hours, according to the website of Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. If symptoms are present after a week of treatment, call your vet. The website suggests applying ophthalmic every two to six hours, and ointments every eight to 12 hours.
