Adopting A Working Cat

Snake Found on VTA Bus Goes Up for Adoption

The Dancing Cat occasionally has unsocialized or undersocialized cats needing good homes. We seek families who would like a working cat, one who will keep your yard free of rodents. The adoption process is the same we want these cats to go to good homes where they will live out their lives in health and safety.

The cats that we relocate to barns, back yards, and gardens are unadoptable as indoor pets as they are varying levels of feral or unsocial. They would be stressed and unhappy indoors. They will most likely will not approach humans or solicit attention, or they may take a long time to trust you enough for touching. For the most part they will avoid you and come out at night to eat and keep your property free from rodents.

They will need access to suitable shelter like a barn, shed or garage. They will need daily cat food and water put out for them. Cats cannot live on hunting alone and feeding them will not reduce their inclination to hunt rodents.

Cats are social creatures and we prefer to adopt them to barn and garden homes in pairs or small colonies. We often have bonded pairs or cats who have lived together in harmony for years who wed like to place in homes together. Having a buddy will help keep feral cats anchored to their new home.

The cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, and treated for any fleas/ticks. The cost of adoption is $100 for each cat, which helps us pay for the costs of veterinary services and supplies.

Animal Shelters And Rescue Organizations

If youve exhausted all other possibilities, local shelters will often, but not always, take in animals owned by residents of the cities that they serve. There is occasionally a fee to surrender an animal to a municipal shelter. Remember, cats and dogs surrendered to a shelter do not have the benefit of an advocate, and often become stressed and shut down. This makes it more difficult for potential adopters to see their true temperaments. That said, sometimes that is the only option.

The shelters in the South San Francisco Bay Area work very hard towards being designated as no-kill shelters. They will not euthanize healthy, social animals. Cats and dogs are adopted by loving owners every day from these shelters.

Whereas, since then, the important work of spay/neuter assistance, aiding and rescuing thousands of companion animals and wildlife, creating and maintaining a regional rescue resource list for numerous species, financially assisting with veterinary emergencies, and providing humane education for many including local elementary school children is proven effective, and,

Whereas, in addition to all of the Ohlone Humane Societys work with companion animals, OHS established a wildlife rehabilitation center that has saved thousand of our wild creatures including endangered and threatened species.

New pop-up space aims to find new homes for rescued kittens

A local nonprofit animal rescue recently established a pop-up playroom at a Morgan Hill shopping center where prospective kitten adopters can meet their potential new pets in a setting that is fun and comfortable for both humans and felines.

The playroom, located next to Nob Hill grocery store at Vineyard Town Center, is run by All Animal Rescue & Friends. The site is open 11am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The playroom is also open for private meet-and-greets with rescued animals and for adoptions, by appointment, according to AARF co-founders.

When the playroom is open, more than 20 rescued kittens ready for adoption are likely to be roaming throughout the space, which is filled with climbable cat towers, tunnels, scratch posts, toys and all manner of distractionseven a giant hamster wheelto allow the kittens to be themselves.

One recent afternoon at the AARF playroom, foster parents brought two kitty friendly dogs who mingled peacefully among the cats.

AARF co-founders and board members Jenifer Lepow and Gwen Dorcich explained that a dedicated playroom like this one is much preferred to other centralized adoption sites. At a pet store or animal shelter, rescued kittens are typically housed in cages or crates, unable to play and likely scared, Dorcich said.

Its good all around for humans and animals, Lepow said.

    Cat Medical History And Health

All of our rescued cats have an initial health check when they are at the shelter. Our goal is to understand the health of each of our cats and provide that information to any potential adopter. However, we cannot guarantee the health of the cat. Therefore we recommend that you take your newly adopted cat to a licensed veterinarian as soon as possible after your adoption. Any known health issues will be disclosed during the interview process and/or at the time you meet the cat.

All of our cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
