In order to determine the correct Frontline Plus dosage, first you will need to establish your dogs weight. You can either weigh your dog at home, or at the vets office. Frontline Plus comes in four different boxes. Weight limits are stated on each box in the lower left hand corner. Advantage II is a topical monthly product that contains the active ingredients imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen. This combination of drugs kills all forms of fleas, including eggs, larva, and adults. However, this product has no tick prevention. This product should only be used in cats and kittens over 8 weeks and who weigh more than 2 pounds. It is typically applied every month for prevention purposes.

Advantage Multi is a topical monthly product containing the active ingredients imidacloprid and moxidectin. This combination of drugs is fast-acting and kills parasites within hours. How Fipronil Is Supplied

• Fipronil is available in a topical 9.7 percent solution. Each card contains 3 or 6 pipettes.
• Fipronil is also available in a 0.29 percent topical spray, in a 100 ml bottle or 250 ml bottle. Each trigger spray of the 100 ml bottle is 0.5 ml of spray. Each trigger spray of the 250 ml bottle is 1.5 ml.

Frontline is a brand of topical, spot-on flea/tick treatment and prevention containing the ingredient fipronil. The patent on fipronil expired in 2010, leading to the release of many generic products. Frontline has since become only available as the products Frontline Plus and more recently, Frontline GOLD.

Comparing Frontline Spray And Frontline Spot

If you are fighting a flea infestation in the home, a Frontline spot-on product can break the flea life cycle.

When considering use of either the Frontline Spray or the Frontline spot-on products, its important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each.

One major advantage of Frontline Spray is fast-acting with a faster kill time for adult fleas and ticks, owing to the product being directly applied across the entire body. While the spot-on products like Frontline Plus and Frontline GOLD can start to work within four hours and 30 minutes respectively, their full effects to kill 100% of fleas and ticks may still take 12 to 18 hours as the spot-on product spreads over the skin.

Frontline Spray is also far more cost-effective, especially since it can be used on both dogs and cats in a multiple pet household.

There are a couple of disadvantages to using Frontline Spray over one of the spot-on products.

The first is that the Frontline Spray does not directly treat all life stages of the flea as it does not contain an insect growth regulator ingredient. This means that after spraying a cat with an active flea infestation, more fleas are likely to appear a couple weeks later. This will take longer for an active infestation of the home to get under control and extra diligence should be taken toward treating the home environment.

How Effective Is Frontline For Cats

Frontline products are still considered to be effective against fleas and ticks. The newer Frontline GOLD is also more efficient at killing fleas by more quickly targeting eggs and larvae.

However, the question of flea or tick resistance to these products and the idea that they dont work comes up often. The 2017 article Perception vs. Reality: Insecticide Resistance in Fleas from DVM360 that refers to an article published in American Veterinarian that same year addresses this topic.

An entomology professor from the University of California heavily investigated this question and concluded that while resistance has been seen to some flea treatment or prevention products, true chemical resistance in fleas with fipronil, imidacloprid, and some other newer products on the market has not yet been demonstrated.

In many cases, when a pup or kitty parent is still seeing live fleas on their pet after a product has been applied, this issue can most often be traced back to incorrect use or application of the product, as well as poor expectations. Following are some common errors or misperceptions.

Storage Of Unused Topicals

Manufacturers packaging protects the product from 2 important things: light and air. Drugs and insecticides can be destroyed and rendered ineffective if mishandled. Keep in the vial and store in a cool, dark place. The fridge is ideal, but under the sink or any other chemical repository is ok. Do not freeze. You may also decide to keep the entire flea medication in the syringe itself which is fine but far from ideal. I recommend an airtight glass vial. The key point is no air exposure, no light, and no heat and they will last a very long time.

Precautions And Side Effects

• While generally safe and effective when prescribed by a veterinarian, fipronil can cause side effects in some animals.
• Fipronil should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug.
• Frontline Top Spot is not recommended for use in debilitated or geriatric animals.
• Frontline Spray Treatment is not recommended for use in pregnant, debilitated, geriatric or nursing animals.
• Fipronil is not recommended for use in kittens and puppies less than 8 weeks of age.
• Fipronil may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with fipronil.
• Fipronil is a topical agent and temporary irritation at the site of application is possible.
• Spotted areas may appear wet or oily for up to 24 hours.
• Overdose is rare and no adverse effects have been reported even up to 5 times the dose.

When Should You Use Flea And Tick Prevention For Cats

Flea and ticks survive and thrive in mild to moderate weather, so it is crucial to protect our pets during the warmer months. This may mean year-round required prevention in the south and western states.

However, even northern states frequently experience a few warm, spring-like days during the winter months. These brief warm periods are enough for fleas and ticks to start an infestation in your house and on your pet.

Once inside your climate-controlled house, fleas can continue to reproduce, living in the floorboards, carpets, and anywhere your pet lives. If your pet isnt using a flea and tick preventive, ticks may even crawl off your pet and onto the humans in the house.

• This treatment does not have separate dosing for cats of different weights. Simply use 1 applicator treatment per cat, every 30 days. In order to safely use Frontline, your cat should be at least 8 weeks old and weigh at least 1.5 pounds.

Apply The Correct Dosage

I have dosed down flea meds for years and, knock on wood, have had no problems. Having several cats and dogs, this is the most economical way for me to do it. With all the cats and dogs there are in the world, HOW can flea meds be SO expensive? I recently came across this chart of dosages for several of the most common brands of flea meds and am reprinting it here for anyone else needing it.

Flea And Tick Medication Redosing Charts

Flea and Tick meds are expensive yet a dose for a 10 lb dog costs the same as a dose for an 80lbs dog! The charts below will help you to break down dosages for small dogs after purchasing the package for large dogs. This will allow you to treat several dogs for the price of 1.

The best way I have found to do this with the liquid medications is to use a 3ml syringe to measure the dose from the large dog vial. When finished , draw the remainder into the syringe, put a cap on it with the dose amount written on attached piece of paper for future reference then store it in the refrigerator.

Advantage required adult fleas to ingest the medication, at which point they would be impacted by the insect-specific neurotoxins and die. Advantage II kills fleas on contact, with the addition of three new chemicals to its formula, that makes your dog or cats skin an entirely inhospitable environment for pests. Eggs are killed before they hatch. Adult fleas are killed and will fall off, or will be washed off in your dogs next bath.

Dose is 0.05ml/pound. Multiply 0.05 times your pets weight for more precise dosage.

Advantage & Advantage II

NOTE: If youre using Frontline Plus The amount of fipronil in the dog version is the same as in the cat version. The Plus is methoprene, an insect growth regulator. Theres LESS of it in the dog product than in the cat product, so its safe to use the dog product on the cats but do NOT use the cat product on a small dog.

Generic Frontline Plus for dogs may contain a different ingredient than the brand name. If a generic Frontline product contains something other than methoprene or fipronil it may not be safe on your cat.

About Frontline Plus For Cats

Fipronil is the primary active ingredient in all Frontline products for both dogs and cats. It is indicated for treating fleas, ticks, and chewing lice. It can also kill mosquitoes. While not labeled for it, it has also been successful in treating for chiggers and the sarcoptic mange mite.

Fipronil is a phenylpyrazole antiparasitic agent, and is technically classified as a pesticide. In invertebrates , it interrupts GABA-regulated nerve channels, causing neurologic overexcitement, disruption and death.

Frontline spot-on flea and tick treatment products are applied to the surface of a small target area or spot of the skin, usually at the back of the head or neck.

Fipronil collects in the oils of the skin and hair, allowing for continual release, lending to its 30 day period of efficacy for flea and tick protection. Per the product label, it takes about 24 hours to spread throughout surface oils on skin and hair to provide complete protection.

It is important to note that while these pesky pests are affected by Frontline by coming in contact with the skin and dont have to actually bite a kitty to die, Frontline products do not provide true repellency that would prevent fleas or ticks from coming in contact with a pet.

What Does Frontline Do For Cats
