Registering your pet’s microchip isn’t just important, it’s also quick and easy. All you need is their microchip number and an internet-connected phone or computer !
Don’t know your pet’s microchip number? See “Step 1” in the “Checking & Updating Microchip Info” section above. Now is the best time to register your pet’s microchip. Below is a list of several of the pet microchip registries and programs for you to choose from. To be safest, we recommend that you register your pet’s microchip both with the manufacturer’s registry and with the Found Animals registry.

Also, some registries charge both to register and do updates or transfers, while others charge for some of these steps but not all, and some are completely free.

Find Out Which Database Your Microchip Is Stored On
In order to change your information, you’ll need to contact the database that holds your pets chip records in its identification system. If you do not know which database the chip is registered with, you can find it out using www.check-a-chip.co.uk.
There are 15 databases authorised by the UK Government . Some of them are Identibase, MyPet, Petlog, PETtrac and PetScanner.

If youve adopted a cat from Cats Protection or another animal welfare organisation, there is every chance that your cat may already have a microchip. Youll need to make sure that your contact details appear when your cats microchip is scanned. At Cats Protection, well change your cats details when you formally adopt them. If youre getting your cat from elsewhere, youll need to ask for further information and the cats original paperwork if possible.
How To Change Microchip Details
Pets microchips contain information like your full name, address,and phone number. This unique number also contains information about your pet like his name, gender, breed, date of birth and his assigned uniqueidentification number. But all this information is private and cannot be changed by anyone. The owner will therefore have to follow certain steps to change their details.

What If My Pet Is Registered In Another Registry
If your pet is registered with another registry, such as AVID or HomeAgain, you will need to contact that registry directly to request for them to update the microchip registration in their database.

How Do I Transfer Ownership Of A Pet With A Microchip In The Uk
Looking to rehome your cat? Youll need to contact your microchip database to complete the transfer of ownership documents. If youre giving your cat up to Cats Protection, well ask you for a signed copy of your cats microchip registration documents authorising ownership details, or might ask you to fill in a form with more information.

How to change the registration information of your pet if you don’t know its microchip number and if the previous owner cannot be reached? You can take the pet to a shelter or a vet to get it scanned. They will be able to tell you which company the microchip is registered with. They will also provide you with the unique microchip code.

The new owner will then need to contact WCRAS to update the local registry. If the new pet is a dog and the new owner lives in a congested area, a dog license will need to be purchased. Licenses do not transfer from one owner to another.

Updating Your Dog Or Cats Details On The Nsw Pet Registry
A new service has been created for NSW cat and dog owners. You can update your pets details on the Registry or over the counter at your local council. The NSW Pet Registry enables lost pets to be reunited with their owners and is now available for cat and dog owners to:
- create an owner profile,
- report their pet missing, and,
- pay most lifetime registration fees online.
The Pet Registry will also be used by pet breeders, vets and authorised identifiers. Pet breeders, who create a profile on the Pet Register, will be able to have their new litters added straight to their profile. Veterinarians and authorised identifiers are able to enter a pets details directly onto the Pet Registry as part of their microchipping service, reducing errors and making data entry more efficient.
For the time being, paper forms are still available for those who cannot use the Pet Registry. People with assistance and working dogs will also need to register their dog in person at their local council.

The sixth step is to pay the appropriate amount of money for the transference of ownership. Some microchip companies provide this service for free, however, others offer it as a low-cost service. Thankfully, most companies do not charge high prices as they want more dogs to be properly registered.
Below is a list of common microchip companies and how much they charge to transfer ownership:

Understanding How A Microchip Works
First, its important to clarify how a microchip works. When a microchip is implanted in your pet, the chip comes with a unique identification number that will remain associated with the pet for eternity, similar to a social security number that is assigned to humans in the U.S.
The microchip can be scanned, and the number detected, by any universal scanner at a vets office or animal shelter. The number is then associated with the information you have provided on the microchip registry such as pets name, age, sex, date of birth and medical information, along with your contact information, such as an address and phone numbers.
When you rehome your pet, you will need to transfer the pets microchip registration to the new owner, so that the microchip number becomes associated with the correct individual. Transfer Microchip To New Adopter
Rehome recommends you microchip your pet and register them before your pet goes to a new home, if possible. Registering your pet’s microchip helps reunite pets with their owners.
After or if your pet is microchipped, as soon as the pet is in their new home, you need to transfer the pet’s microchip registration to the new owner’s information. Each microchip registry is different in what they will require for an ownership transfer. Some may ask you fill out an online form while others will require you to call them.
