All 7 Types Of Big Cats Around The World
When we think about the types of big cats in the world, we often think about lions and tigers, two of the most famous species. But there are actually seven different types of big cats prowling around our planet.
Big cats are some of the largest and most fierce apex predators in the world, but there is one species that threatens them humans.
Many of these spectacular species are considered endangered or threatened, meaning they run the risk of becoming extinct if we dont take action immediately.
Did you know? All big cats are wild cats, but not all wild cats are big cats!
Which Big Cat Has The Strongest Bite
The jaguar has the strongest bite of any big cat relative to its size. Research by Adam Hartstone-Rose and colleagues at the University of South Carolina, who compared the bite forces of nine different cat species, reveals that a jaguar’s bite force is only three-quarters as strong as a tiger’s bite force.
However, given that jaguars are considerably smaller , relatively speaking their bite is stronger.
If you had to choose, youd want to be bitten by a jaguar, not a lion or a tiger. But pound for pound, jaguars pack a stronger punch, says Adam.
The strength of the jaguars bite is due to the arrangement of its jaw muscles, which, relative to weight, are slightly stronger than those of other cats. In addition also relative to weight its jaws are slightly shorter, which increases the leverage for biting.
These two modifications, though minor, combine to give the jaguar the strongest relative bite force. Indeed, a jaguar can bite straight through the skull of its prey, and pierce the thick skin of a caiman with ease.
The Ancient Art Of Leaving
In January 2010, the band began the follow up to On Tomorrow, again working with Barry Poynter. They set out to develop and arrange the 25 demos that Taggart had written. By late October the band announced that recording had finally come to an end and that they would be releasing 25 songs as a two part album in late 2011 and early 2012. On December 13, 2011, the first half of that effort was released, titled: The Ancient Art Of Leaving: High & Low.
Arriving nearly a year after The Ancient Art Of Leaving: High & Low, part two of The Big Cats 25 song project The Ancient Art Of Leaving: Two Parts was released on November 6, 2012. The band also announced via their website that there will be a limited 3xLP vinyl release of the entire project titled simply The Ancient Art Of Leaving available on the same date.

There is only one species of lion, which is known scientifically as Panthera leo. There are two recognised subspecies, the African lion and the Asiatic lion .
Some taxonomists have proposed a different split of the subspecies with P. l. leo covering lions in Asian and west, central and north Africa, and P. l. melanochaita for lions in south and east Africa.
How Can You Help Big Cats

Why Can Only Big Cats Roar
There are four big cats that can roar: lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar – all of which belong to the genus Panthera, says Stephen Mills.
In these species, the epihyal bone, part of the voice box, is replaced by a ligament. This can be stretched, creating a larger sound-producing passage and thus a wider range of pitch. The more the ligament extends, the lower the sound generated when air passes across the vocal cords. In addition, the cords are large, unbroken and fleshy, which produces deeper sounds.

The Great Plains Foundation Big Cats Initiative
In 2009, the National Geographic Society, in partnership with National Geographic Explorers at Large and world renowned conservationists and filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, founded the Big Cats Initiative to halt the decline of big cats in the wild. BCI made a substantial impact in big cats conservation, awarding more than 150 grants for work in 28 countries, funding individuals on-the-ground research and innovative field-based conservation projects to safeguard big cats and their critical habitats. This impact continues under Dereck and Beverlys leadership at the Great Plains Big Cats Initiative.
The Society remains committed to protecting big cats and has a renewed focus on supporting wildlife workincluding the development of new grant opportunitiesfor Explorers who are on the frontlines of conservation. If you are interested in supporting Explorers who are working to save threatened wildlife, safeguard ecosystems, and educate and encourage people to co-exist more peacefully with local animal populations visit natgeo.org/give. Why Do Big Cats Usually Stalk And Pounce
Hunting consumes a huge amount of energy, and it is much more calorie-efficient for cats to sit, wait, stalk and pounce rather than travel long distances over difficult terrain, says BBC Wildlife contributor Karen Emslie.
Feline energy expenditure has been the subject of research by scientists from the University of California, who developed a high-tech collar equipped with GPS and accelerometers to track and monitor wild mountain lions.
They found that not only do the cats use the most energy-efficient form of hunting and stalking, but they also adjust the power of their pounce depending on the size of their prey.
The team also studied captive mountain lions and discovered that, despite their strength, they lack a high aerobic capacity, and therefore have a slow walking pace. This enables them to conserve energy for killer bursts of speed and power pounces.

How And Why Do Big Cats Roar
The throats of cats that can roar are slightly different to those of other cats.
Roaring requires incomplete ossification of the hyoid bone. The hyoid bone is a U-shaped bone in the throat that is connected to the larynx .
Ossification is the formation of bone. A big cats hyoid bone is not completely ossified and is part tendon. Tendon is more flexible than bone, giving a big cats voice box greater flexibility.
All this is rather technical, but suffice to say these adaptations allow the big cats to produce the loud, deep vocalizations known as roars.
Roaring serves a number of purposes, and usually signifies aggression. Competing males often roar at each other during the mating season. Roaring also signals to other big cats that a territory is occupied. Its a good way to show how big and tough you are without actually having to fight your rivals!
The lion has the loudest roar of any big cat a lions roar can be heard up to 8 kilometers away!

Where To See This Big Cat
The best place for spotting a jaguar is the Brazilian Pantanal. The jaguar tours in the Pantanal are centered on the river cruises along the Cuiaba River near the town of Porto Jofre located at the end of the Transpantaneira highway. The jaguars are typically spotted on the river banks and with the water acting as a natural barrier so the big cats are not disturbed by the boats. If you are lucky, you may even witness a hunt.
It is best to stay on the river for a few days in case of rainy weather. Jaguars are rarely seen in the rain.
To support the local community, arrange your trip with an experienced and dedicated local guide from Pantanal Trackers.

As of the early 21st century, molecular studies based on analysis have suggested new relationships among mammal families. Most of these findings have been independently validated by . Classification systems based on molecular studies reveal three major groups or lineages of placental mammals, and which in the . The relationships between these three lineages is contentious, and all three possible hypotheses have been proposed with respect to which group is . These hypotheses are , and . Boreoeutheria in turn contains two major lineages and .
Estimates for the divergence times between these three placental groups range from 105 to 120 million years ago, depending on the type of DNA used and varying interpretations of data.
