Meet The Snowshoe Cat

Snowshoe Cat VS. Siamese Cat

The Snowshoe is a medium to large feline weighing between 7 to 14 pounds. They have inherited a good mix of the Siamese and American Shorthair appearance traits. For example, they have the length of the Siamese and the slight stockiness of the American Shorthair. This gives them an athletic structure with a more rounded look than the Siamese. Males will have significantly muscular bodies than females, too.

Their heads are usually triangular shaped but sometimes can be more rounded. They have long, wide-set ears and striking walnut-shaped eyes, which can be any shade of blue. Some Snowshoes have pale blue eyes, whereas others have a deep ocean blue shade. However, regardless of the tone, they always look bright and shiny. Another distinctive facial feature of this breed is their upside-down V marking.

Their short, single-coat fur has point colouring that resembles a tuxedo. It consists of a light body with darker patches on the ears, face, legs and tail. Their chest, paws, and some parts of their face will usually be white. The shading can differ but is typically a seal point or blue point.

Although Snowshoe cats have been around for some time, they remain rare because of the difficulty of reproducing the correct coat markings. Its also hard to predict how a Snowshoes coat will look, and their markings tend to darken over time, too.

Snowshoe Siamese Kitten Price

The Snowshoe Siamese costs between $600 and $1,200, so they are more expensive than the Shorthair parent but costs less than the Siamese. The Snowshoe is a recognized breed and has championship status. This means that there will be some examples of the Snowshoe that come from show-winning stock. These will cost more than the average house cat variant.

It is unlikely that you will find one of these cats in a local shelter because their price and popularity mean that most owners will recognize them as being some sort of Siamese.

When choosing a breeder, ensure that you get to meet the kitten, at least one of its parents, and the breeder themselves before committing. The Snowshoe should be friendly, alert, and happy to meet new people. Although the temperament of the parent is no guarantee of what a kitten will grow up like, if you meet the mother and she is good with strangers, this is a positive sign.

The Temperament Of A Snowshoe

Snowshoe Cats can have varying personalities, but they are always very kind, loving and affectionate. They adore being around humans, children and animals, seeking attention from everyone. They can be a bit needy, though, and will make their presence known to you at all times. When they want attention, theyll tell you either by rubbing against your leg, sitting on your lap, or even just watching you.

Snowshoes can be pretty vocal, but they are not as loud as their ancestors, the Siamese. They love to climb and jump and will seek out high spots to perch on. Therefore, a tall cat tree always goes down a treat with this kitty, but they will love it if you clear a top shelf for them, too.

Snowshoe cats are very smart, and they are eager to learn tricks to show off to everyone they meet. Their intelligence makes it easy to teach them commands, too. However, this also means they need interactive play and challenging puzzle toys to keep their brains active.

Snowshoes are known to be devoted, loyal companions and some will even act as the protector of their favourite human. This close bonding does mean that they dont like to be left alone for too long, though, and they are certainly at their happiest when the entire family unit is at home together.

Before we start with the Snowshoe cat breeders list, we need to see how this cat breed came to life.

At the end of the 1960s, Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty of Kensing Cattery in Philadelphia, a Siamese breeder, produced a litter of three Siamese kittens with pure white mittens. She decided to turn these into a breed instead of giving them away.

She decided to reproduce the look by breeding a bicolor American Shorthair with a seal-point Siamese cat which resulted in kittens without Siamese pointed pattern due to the recessive gene that both parents need to carry. After that, she bred the resulting kittens with Siamese mates. Continuing crossbreeding with American Shorthair bi-colors resulted in the V pattern inverted on the muzzle and on the nose, which is the opinion of that breeder, a charming variety.

The new breed was named the Snowshoe due to their paws that looked like they were in the snow.

Now, lets see adoptable Snowshoes from our Snowshoe cat breeders list.

History Of The Snowshoe Cat

The snowshoe cat breed began in the 1960s when Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty, an American breeder of Siamese cats, discovered three kittens in one of her litters that each had four white paws. The paws, combined with the striking Siamese colorpoint pattern, delighted Hinds-Daugherty. She decided to cross these Siamese kittens with American shorthair cats with tuxedo markings in an attempt to develop the snowshoe breed.

The breed is growing in popularity. It was recognized in 1982 by the Cat Fanciers’ Association and in 1994 by the International Cat Association.

Public interest in the breed was piqued by the late Grumpy Cat, a snowshoe cross, who gained celebrity status as a social media star in 2012. While she had distinct snowshoe colors and markings, Grumpy Cat’s glum-looking features were considered a result of dwarfism and were not characteristic of the breed.

Are Lynx Point Siamese Cats Hypoallergenic

The Lynx Point Siamese cat can be a terrific choice if you want a hypoallergenic cat. Their fur is short and they shed less.

There is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic cat. The Lynx Point Siamese, in particular, may lose a few hairs after touching and cuddling. However, they shed less than other cats with long coats such as Persian cats, Ragdoll cats, and Maine Coons.

Siamese cats generate less Fel D1 protein than other cat breeds. It is why they are famous for being hypoallergenic.

Fel D1 is a protein in cats skin, urine, and saliva. If this protein is abundant, it might induce moderate to severe allergic responses. Yes, its this protein, rather than the cats fur, that causes allergic reactions!

Breeders have attempted but failed to create a cat breed that does not generate Fel D1.

If you want to own a cat that is less likely to cause allergies, you may pick the Lynx Point Siamese. Along with the Lynx Point Siamese cats, the Javanese, Sphynx, and Cornish Rex are cats that shed the least.

Can Lynx Point Siamese Be Left On Their Own

These cats are exceptionally social and will try to take a closer look at whatever youre doing around the house. If you spend a lot of time away from home, you may be wondering whether this is the type of cat that will do well on its own.

Siamese cats are somewhat prone to separation anxiety, despite being independent-minded. In most cases, they should be ok for a while so going out for an evening or daytime appointment should not be a problem.

Leaving your cat alone for more than eight hours at a time may cause some anxiety, however. If you work away from home and routinely spend most of the day out, it may be a good idea to adopt two cats or reconsider adopting at all.

A siamese, in particular, may suffer a lot of stress from being on its own for such a long time.

Notes On Tabby Markings

Tabby cats get their markings from the presence of the agouti gene, in conjunction with other genes that give a tabby either a striped, spotted or mottled pattern.

The particular gene responsible for producing the striped coat pattern is called the mackerel gene, presumably because it gives a cat mackerel-like stripes.

It also gives the striped tabby a distinctive M-shaped marking on his forehead, which you can also see on the wild European lynx, below.
