Medroxyprogesterone Acetate: Dog Contraceptive Injection

Getting non-surgical fertility control products approved for use in cats

Medroxyprogesterone acetate is a synthetic version of the drug progesterone, so it works in roughly the same way that megestrol acetate does.

The drug is available in generic forms, but it is best known by either of its name brand formulations Provera or Depo-Provera.

This medication was first developed in the 1950s, and it is used for birth control, as well as the treatment of some other hormone-related ailments in humans. In dogs, it is used to address behavioral problems, such as aggression, and to delay the onset of estrus.

The medication is available in several forms, but it is most commonly administered to dogs as an injection. Two dosage strengths are available, which last three or four months, respectively. The medication is not FDA-approved for use in pets in the US, but some vets will prescribe it for off-label use.

Unfortunately, there are a number of side effects associated with medroxyprogesterone acetate. Among other things, it can trigger mammary tumors, diabetes, weight gain, and lethargy. Some vets even discourage its use completely in intact females, as it may trigger potentially dangerous uterine infections.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate is also used to diminish the sexdrive of males, and reduce some sex-related behaviors, such as roaming formates.

What Is Birth Control For Dogs

Birth control for dogs is a medical aid used to prevent pregnancy. It can temporarily or permanently stop the reproductive cycle in males or females. This makes your dog unable to impregnate or become pregnant whilst on birth control or minimize the ability to do so, thereby preventing unwanted pregnancies.

Often you will still want your bitch to maintain the ability to become pregnant alongside the health and energy to carry a pregnancy to birth and then care for the puppies. As recommended by the AKC , a female should only have a litter every eighteen months to two years. Too many litters lead to detrimental effects. Puppies can be miscarried, born stillborn, or with a severe disability. Even the mother can suffer physical health risks from excess litters such as fatigue. Birth control can manage the number of pregnancies your female has each year.

You must also consider the health of your stud. Males who mate multiple times a day, regularly, will tire themselves out and can cause hip pain. Excess breeding will lower the sperm count in studs. Birth control will prevent successful mating and maintain a males sperm count and fertility. Therefore, from a business perspective, birth control will benefit stud owners. It may also decrease his sex drive, thereby decreasing mounting numbers and preventing joint pain.

Types Of Canine Birth Control

The types of birth control available for dogs available are not just limited to a pill. You are able to provide your stud with an implant, or a pill or liquid medication for your bitch. Furthermore, there are temporary birth control methods and permanent. Surgeries can entirely prevent a female or male dog from being able to become pregnant or fertilize. Each method has pros and cons including cost, availability, ease of administration and risks. You need to know each birth control type so you can make an informed decision about which is best for your dog and your circumstances.

Other Birth Control Medications

There are a few other birth control medications that are used in some other parts of the world, and a few that are no longer available. Additionally, it is important to note that this is a relatively fertile area of research, so it is wise to discuss any new or recently approved birth control medications available.

Some researchers have also found that ultrasound can be effective for sterilizing male dogs. However, it requires repeated applications and the dogs must be anesthetized prior to the procedure, which eliminates many of the benefits of surgery-free birth control methods.

Additionally, this method does not seem to have gainedwidespread acceptance in the veterinary community.

Why Birth Control For Dogs

There are a few different reasons why a dog owner may seek out birth control for dogs. Outside of controlling the animal population, some pet owners are not ready to breed their dogs.

When it comes to pregnancy, a great deal of time is required to plan, test for genetic conditions and choose the perfect mate. Additionally, some dogs are not healthy enough to breed. This is especially true if they have a genetic condition, like von Willebrands disease, which is the most common hereditary bleeding disorder in dogs. This disease, as well as many others, can easily be transmitted to offspring.

Birth control is also important when it comes to ensuring the health of your canine and keeping behavior issues at bay. Behavior problems are common when it comes to both male and female dogs, and investing in spaying and neutering can reduce these problems significantly. According to one research study, after sterilization surgery, at least 74 percent of all males and 59 percent of females showed a reduction or elimination of behavior problems such as aggression.

Chemical Prevention Of The Oestrus Cycle

Birth control can be employed using various drugs similar to natural reproductive hormones. The drugs are administered by injection or as tablets at specified intervals, and it is very important that veterinary advice is followed as regards the treatment programme. The drugs used can prevent or shorten oestrus cycles but many have potentially serious side effects which should be discussed with your vet.

This method is similar to human contraception, but the potential risks mean that it is not generally considered desirable for on-going, long-term birth control in pet cats. It may be used as a short-term measure, or as a permanent measure only in cats that for some reason cannot undergo conventional surgical neutering.

Should You Neuter Your Cat

Many of the kittens and cats that you see in a rescue centre or straying on the street are the result of unwanted litters. This is the main reason why you should seriously consider getting your cats neutered, both male and female.

Plus, there are health advantages for the animal itself. Of course some people may want to use their cats for breeding and others may be ethically against pregnancy control. In the end, the decision lies with you, but here are some of the facts to help you make up your mind:

Are Human Contraceptive Pills Dangerous For Dogs

California To Make Birth Control Easy – No Prescription Required

Dogs are known to eat whatever they have found, unfortunately, it is possible for them to eat your contraceptive pill. They can not only make your dog ill but can be lethal for your dog. However, this is only the case in very high doses of the pill or a huge level of consumption. If given gradually, there will be no notable change externally but internally the pill will have side effects. Along with the pill not preventing unwanted pregnancies, it can also cause weakened bone marrow over time and even affect blood cell count in your dog.

Male Birth Control Options

You might not be as concerned about unwanted pregnancy with a male dog, unless you have a female living next door or in the same house.

Having said that, preventing your dog from sewing his seed without prior permission should really be something you think about! If your dog is one which tends to wander off on his own exploration missions, birth control is also something you should have high on your importance list.

As with females, there are a couple of options you can think about for your male dog, although surgical neutering is still the number one go-to choice.

You may hear some people mention that neutering a dog can calm him down, i.e. if he is very excitable or has the habit of becoming aggressive when near to a female dog, particularly one which is in season. This totally depends on the dog himself. Yes, it can work for many dogs, but similarly, it doesnt have the same effect for some others.

Is It Safe To Order Your Birth Control Online

By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 25, 2019 — In recent years, a growing number of companies have been offering prescriptions for birth control through web-based services and smartphone apps. Now a “secret shopper” study suggests it’s a safe and reliable source for women.

So-called “telecontraception” services have emerged as an alternative to trips to the doctor or local family planning clinic. They allow women to get prescriptions for birth control pills after completing an online questionnaire, and sometimes having a follow-up call with a health care provider.

The prescription can be picked up at a local pharmacy or delivered by mail.

Many women get contraceptives through their doctor, but the issue of access to birth control has become more pressing as family planning clinics close across the United States.

Advocates argue that these online companies fill a gap, making at least some birth control methods more accessible — particularly to women who live in “contraception deserts” lacking reproductive health clinics. And the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists just recommended in a new statement that all hormonal contraceptives, including rings, shots and patches, be available without a prescription, to help meet that need.

On the other hand, the idea of online health care makes some people uncomfortable, said senior study author Dr. Ateev Mehrotra.

Overall, Mehrotra said, the companies did a good job of screening.

How Can I Prevent My Female Dog From Coming Into Heat And Having Puppies

Mermaid Cat Birth Control Pill Case with Snap Cats Pill

There are two methods to prevent estrus, or heat, in a female dog:

1. Surgery – ovariohysterectomy : Recommended. Ovariohysterectomy, or a spay surgery, involves the surgical removal of the entire female reproductive tract, including the uterus and both ovaries. It is a permanent and irreversible procedure. Although this is a major abdominal surgery involving general anesthesia, there is little risk associated with the procedure when it is performed by a veterinarian.

Recently, some veterinarians have begun to offer and recommend an ovariectomy in this procedure, only the ovaries are removed, leaving the uterus. Ask your veterinarian what they recommend for your dog.

2. Medical management using hormonal drugs: Not typically recommended, due to risks.

Veterinarians Are Currently Opting For Surgical Solutions

India is home to 35 million street dogs and lakhs of cats, and their ever increasing population is posing a challenge to veterinarians. On Thursday, the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University organised a national symposium on Current Trends in Contraception: Opportunities and Challenges for Population Control in Dogs and Cats.

The alarming situation was explained by Director of Clinics S. Balasubramanian, who said a male dog, left free, could produce 67,000 offspring in a short span of six years. A cat and its progeny are capable of producing over two lakh offspring in eight years, he said.

Even though Chennai has a population of over one lakh dogs, the Veterinary College in Vepery sees a maximum of 45 dogs and cats being brought in for population control in a month.

Dr. Balasubramaniam said TANUVAS was already working on a single intravasal injection with styrene maleic anhydride for contraception on rats. This process can be reversed by dimethyl sulfoxide if the owner of the dog wants it to breed, he said. C. Balachandran, vice-chancellor, TANUVAS, said at present, veterinarians were opting for surgical methods for population control. We are working on innovations in non-surgical fertility techniques to control the population in a safe and humane way, he explained.

What Is The Duration Of Canine Injection For Birth Control

A canine birth-control injection will prevent a bitch from becoming pregnant for one whole cycle, this usually lasts five months. The injection will be given during the start of the cycle and will maintain hormone control to prevent the release of eggs and thereby stop pregnancy. Therefore, hormone injections should only be required twice a year per bitch.

Cat Contraception Megestrol Acetate A Useful Tool During Covid

VLOGMAS 2! Going off birth control, Sourdough Saga, Cat Cuteness // GwenGwiz

In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many spay and neuter clinics closed their doors for an extended period of time. Appointments for spay and neuter surgery, especially low-cost, remain extremely limited. In many cases, there is a waiting time of several months.

In communities with low access to spay and neuter, Alley Cat Allies recommends immediate action in the form of a contraceptive, or birth control, for unspayed female cats.

Megestrol acetate works as a contraception and prevents female cats from going into heat and becoming pregnant. MA has long been prescribed by American veterinarians to treat various conditions in both male and female cats, but before now, it has not been widely used in the United States as a contraceptive.

The use of MA for other purposes, and its use as a contraceptive overseas, have given veterinarians an increased and now solid level of comfort in recommending the use of MA as a contraceptive during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whether its a cat you are fostering or a new stray who has wandered into your neighborhood, many of us experience the uncomfortable position of having an unspayed female cat in our lives when access to surgical spay is limited. Given this unpleasant reality, MA is a welcome addition for cat caregivers.

How Much & How To Give Megestrol Acetate:

  • Experts recommend that one 2.5 mg dose of MA be given orally to each unspayed female cat once a week. The simple guideline is one cat one dose once a week. For female cats already showing signs of heat, the dose should be given at 5 mg per cat per day for three days only. After that, it should be given in a 2.5 mg dose once a week.
  • MA is best given in liquid form added to food that is served on a plastic plate. If served on a paper plate, some or all of the MA might be absorbed by the paper.
  • It is recommended that cats be given MA for no more than 30 weeks.
  • MA requires a commitment on the part of the caregiver to give the medicine each week in the right amount to each cat. This is most easily accomplished in a household with only one cat, and more difficult in scenarios in which there are multiple cats. If you are giving MA to more than one cat, each cat must be watched to ensure she doesnt eat her own food with its dose and then wander over to eat another cats dose as well.
