There are a few concerns and risks associated with giving your dog Pepto Bismol. This is a prime reason why it is vital to consult your veterinarian regarding your dogs needs. Pepto Bismol can turn a dogs stool a green-black color. This change in coloration could mask melena, or blood in the stool, making it difficult to verify if your dog is having a serious medical issue. Melena presents as black, tar-like stools and can indicate a very serious medical problem.

Pepto Bismol tablets appear opaque on X-rays. Why is this a problem? If your veterinarian performs a radiograph of your dogs abdomen, they may see the tablets in your dogs intestines. Unfortunately, these tablets appear as foreign bodies of metal in your dogs body. This could lead to unnecessary and expensive surgery to remove the metal from your dogs body.

If your dog has an upset stomach, there are ways to comfort him until the diarrhea passes. Mild diarrhea in dogs is often self-limiting and medications are not needed for resolution, Wallach says. That being said, you can feed your dog a bland diet for a few days if he has soft stool or diarrhea.

Knowing that you are nearby can also help soothe your dog, so try to fit in a few tummy rubs while he rests. If your pets symptoms do not resolve or if they worsen, or if other signs of illness develop , however, you should bring your dog to the veterinarian, Wallach says.

Although Pepto Bismol may help address your dogs mild diarrhea, never administer a dose without consulting your vet first. And, if youre curious about if the same rule applies to your cat, know that Pepto Bismol should never be given to cats under any circumstances due to the risk of salicylate toxicity, Wallach says. Salicylate toxicity can cause anemia, ulceration, and liver failure in cats, making salicylates toxic at any dose.

Why Cats Get Diarrhea

How to Take Pepto Bismol | Pepto Bismol

There can be many causes of diarrhea in cats. Typically, cats will vomit or have diarrhea due to:

  • Eating something toxic or a foreign object
  • Too many table scraps or fatty foods can upset your cat’s stomach

When fecal matter moves through the intestines faster than normal, and there is decreased absorption of water, nutrients, and electrolytes, the result is diarrhea. It is a symptom of diseases or other issues like toxins, foreign body ingestion, etc., that affect the small intestines, large intestines, or other organs outside the gastrointestinal tract.

Does Your Cat Have An Upset Stomach Or Is It Something More

Contributed by Dr. Alison Birken, owner and DVM of Victoria Park Animal Hospital.

Working as a small animal veterinarian, one of the most common ailments I see in cats is upset stomach. About 50 percent of the appointments I see in a day are cases of vomiting or diarrhea. Most of these cat digestive health stomach issues are caused by a simple problem with a simple solution. The most common causes of non-complicated vomiting and diarrhea are:

  • Food Indiscretion

I generally prescribe some medications, and within a few days, the cats are back to being themselves. On occasion, however, its not so simple. So as pet parents, when should we be concerned that an upset stomach may actually be caused by cat digestive problems? The best way to answer this question is to start by asking how often your cat is experiencing an upset stomach. An occasional episode of vomiting or diarrhea is usually not anything more serious. If your cat is having an episode every few months that resolves quickly or with medication, I am not too concerned, especially if these episodes are associated with eating something unusual, or a situation that may have caused stress .

The next question to answer is, are there other clinical signs associated with the vomiting and diarrhea that may indicate cat digestive problems? And finally, how severe is the vomiting and/or diarrhea? Clinical signs you should look for that require more advanced testing include:

How Much Pepto Bismol Can I Give My Cat?

Pepto-Bismol is available in two strengths, a liquid and a chewable tablet. The tablet is a popular choice for dogs, but cats do not like the taste.

The liquid must be squirted into your cats mouth from a feeding syringe without a needle. Be sure to aim the syringe to the side and avoid squirting it down their throat. The chewable tablets can be disguised in treats or biscuits, so your cat may not know that youre giving him a medicine.

In addition, the amount of the liquid depends on the weight of your cat.

The best time to give your cat Pepto-Bismol is when its needed most, and isnt too long before you have to worry about overdoing it. The dose depends on the weight of the animal being treated, but there are some guidelines that can help you.

A good place to start is Franklin Animal Clinic, which provides rough dosage guides. You can also use a measuring cup to make sure the dose is right for your cat.

Its important to keep in mind that if you give your cat Pepto Bismol, you can increase its dose to relieve the symptoms of diarrhea.

However, it is important to note that cats cannot metabolize salicylates, which can cause a range of unpleasant effects. If given in excess, it can even cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and perforation.

When Pepto-Bismol is taken as a tablet, it should be swallowed with water or food.

While Pepto-Bismol is generally safe for cats, some cats are sensitive to it.

How To Treat Dog Tummy Problems

An upset stomach can be caused by a number of things, such as stress or anxiety, switching to a new food, medication side effects, or consuming something they shouldnt have. For dog tummy troubles, Pepto Bismol should not be the first attempt for treatment. Vet-recommended methods for treating mild stomach upset include:

    • Do nothing. Wait 12-24 hours before giving your dog his next meal so his digestive system can recover. Make sure he continues to stay hydrated, especially if he has diarrhea.
    • Add plain canned pumpkin to his food. Add 1 to 4 tablespoons per meal, depending on your dogs size.
    • Visit your veterinarian. If the condition continues for more than 24 hours or worsens, contact your vet.

Severe or prolonged conditions need to be treated by a vet, however, so dont administer any OTC medications until youve consulted your pups doctor. Knowing what your pet has gotten into can help tremendously when visiting the vet, as diarrhea can come from a myriad of sources. Remember if your dog has had diarrhea for more than a day, or is exhibiting any of the following symptoms, go to the vet:

    • Very dark to black stools
    • Stools mixed with blood or mucus
