Caring For An Incontinent Cat
It is important to note that incontinent cats are individuals: Some may not leak at all and require minimal care, while others may leak frequently and require more care. Before adopting an incontinent cat, make sure to consider your comfort level and the amount of time you can commit to care. This will ensure the right fit for your home and lifestyle.
Signs That Medical Intervention Is Needed
Contact your vet in these situations:
- A pink tinge, bits of blood or a foul, sometimes fishy smell to the urine can indicate a urinary tract infection . Leakage of urine from a cat who doesnt usually leak might also indicate a UTI. Promptly call your vet.
- A blockage may be present in the urinary tract if a cat who usually leaks urine has not been urinating, or if the bladder is full or tense and youre not able to express it. Since this could be a medical emergency, immediately call your vet.;
- Very watery or mucous-laden stools or very large, hard stools may indicate the need for a supplement or medicine to help add form to and soften the stool and help prevent further complications. Youll need to determine what is normal stool consistency for your particular cat. Consult your vet if you have any concerns about stool consistency or the evacuation process.
- Cats with chronic diarrhea leakage frequently develop irritation around their anal area that may require an exam and a topical medicine . Your vet can advise you on proper treatment.
- An impacted colon can be a medical emergency. Cats prone to constipation, especially those requiring daily evacuation because they cannot physiologically defecate, are particularly at risk. If you find that you cannot express the stool and the colon is large and full, contact your vet.

Symptoms Of Constipation In Cats
Constipation is characterized by infrequent stools or stools that are difficult to pass. Most cats will poop about every 24-36 hours. If your cat is pooping less frequently and having some difficulty, she may be constipated.
While there is some normal variation, if its been more than 48-72 hours without a bowel movement, you should contact your vet.;
The main signs of constipation in cats are:
- Dry, hard stools
Normally, the poop is;a rich brown color and should look well-formed. A healthy stool has enough moisture that litter will stick to it, says Dr. Liz Bales, VMD.;Cats with constipation may have very dry, hard stools. You may find these stools outside the litter box, because the discomfort of trying to pass stool can cause cats to leave the litter box before theyre actually finished.
- Crying or straining in the litter box, or avoiding it altogether
Other signs of discomfort can be vocalizing or straining when using the litter box or going in and out multiple times before using it. Your cat may strain but not be able to poop at all. Showing discomfort in the litter box can also be a sign of serious urinary tract issues, so you should contact a vet if you see these signs.
Constipation is really a symptom of other issues, so you may also see signs of the underlying cause. These may include:
- Walking stiffly
If youre seeing any of these symptoms, with or without constipation, you should discuss them with your cats vet.
Home Remedies For Cat Constipation
Home remedies, like stool softeners and changes in diet, may relieve cat constipation, but like Wallace mentions above, Erk cautions that pet parents should never administer home remedies before checking in with their veterinarian. Cat owners should always have their pet evaluated before trying any home remedies, specifically because of the risks of delaying appropriate care or mistaking constipation for other potentially life threatening situations, like a urinary blockage, he says.
Wallace says that the best thing that cat parents can do at home to combat constipation is to ensure their cat is drinking enough water. The number one thing I recommend to patients is a kitty water fountain, she says. Cats like drinking running water better than still water. If that doesnt work, or a water fountain isnt in your budget, Wallace also suggests adding either low-sodium chicken broth or a bit of tuna juice to your cats water. It flavors it and theyll drink more because it tastes good, she explains.
Another remedy Wallace mentions is psyllium powdera soluble fiber that can be added to a cats food as either a powder or a liquid. She also says that adding pumpkin to your cats food may help with constipation, as it adds both fiber and moisture. However, its not a given that your cat will actually eat it. They have to like pumpkin, and we know that cats dont eat anything they dont like.

How To Help A Constipated Or Obstipated Cat
If your cat is dehydrated or obstipated , then it will need to be treated on an inpatient basis. Fluid therapy will be given, and if your cat is taking any medications that may be causing the constipation, they will be discontinued and/or replaced.
You can give your cat a dietary supplement;with a bulk-forming agent to help with constipation, though these agents can sometimes worsen fecal distension within the colon. If this occurs, you will need to feed your cat a low residue-producing diet.
After your doctor has determined that your cat is sufficiently rehydrated, manual removal of the feces, with your cat under general anesthesia, will be conducted. If the impaction is not too severe, enemas may help to loosen or dislodge the impaction, but generally, the impaction must be removed manually. Your veterinarian may do this by hand, or with forceps. If the condition has been chronic, your veterinarian may need to perform a surgical procedure to remove part of the colon. This type of surgery is known as a subtotal colectomy, and may be required with recurring obstipation, or when circumstances suggest that the colon has been irreversibly damaged.
What To Do If Your Cat Starts Leaking Urine
The first thing to do if your cat starts to exhibit symptoms of incontinence is to pay a visit to your veterinarian, so he or she can assist in an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. Your vet will ask you a lot of questions and perform a complete physical exam and will more than likely order tests on your cats urineto check for signs of;urinary tract infection;and other abnormalities, as well as blood work to rule out conditions such as diabetes. Imaging such as X-rays or an ultrasound may also be needed.
Your vets diagnosis will determine the treatment plan put in place for your cat. For example, antibiotics may be prescribed to tackle a causal infection; hormone replacements may be advised if your cat has been neutered or has developed urinary incontinence because of old age; or for serious medical cases, surgery may be performed to remove a bladder or urinary tract obstruction, for reparation of the bladder or urinary tract or to tackle a spinal cord injury.
However, there are several other steps that you can take to help to manage your cats incontinence naturally and comfortably.

More Than Proving He Can
Cory got really good at this game really quickly. He started following some of his other caregivers around when Felicia was busy in another room or out on her weekends. Hes so fast and agile that occasionally he surprises them when he suddenly appears underfoot.
Clearly, theres nothing wrong with Corys speed or agility. But following his caregivers around does more for Cory than simply proving that he can. When he first came to the Sanctuary, he was a little bit shy. Now he has gained confidence and become more relaxed and outgoing with people. Hell run right up to visitors and volunteers to say hello and welcome them to Quincy House. Its an important job for a lobby cat.
All of the exercise has helped Cory in other ways, too. Since moving into Cat World, hes shed some weight and has gotten into excellent shape. Now that hes fitter and friendlier than ever, hes less likely to be underestimated and impossible to overlook. Its not every day you see a cat as special as Cory living life to the fullest, cruising along in the fast lane.
What Is Cat Constipation
If your cat is constipated, it means he isnt pooping regularly or hes having difficulty emptying his bowels. Cats typically defecate one to three times per day, so if you notice that its been more than a day or two since new poop has appeared in the litter box, its time to start really watching your cats bathroom habits for further symptoms.
A cat who occasionally goes a day or two without defecating shouldnt cause much worry, but if the lack of feces is ongoing and you start noticing further symptomslike your cat straining to go without success or crying as he uses the litter boxit could indicate that a bowel obstruction has become severely impacted and that its time to visit your veterinarian . In extreme cases, untreated constipation can be fatal.

Help Going To The Bathroom
Usually a paralyzed animal will have no control over urination or defecation. Defecation will occur shortly after eating. However, an animal may need help with urination. You might have to learn how to express his bladder. Sometimes, a paralyzed animal may need his bladder catheterized. Your veterinary team will show you how to do both expression and catheterization .
Skin Care And Cleanliness
Cleanliness is perhaps one of the most important parts of caring for paralyzed dogs. Because many dogs with paralysis or paresis cannot fully control urination and defecation, messes can happen frequently. It’s important to keep urine from soaking the coat and staying on the skin. The compounds in urine can be very irritating to the skin. Urine that remains on the skin can cause a very uncomfortable rash and even lead to a skin infection. Feces can cause irritation and sores around the anus and even attract insects.
Be sure to keep incontinent dogs on an absorbent pad or in a diaper when not being directly supervised. Use dog diapers for dogs in carts or those with some mobility. Replace diapers and underpads frequently and keep the dog’s skin clean and dry. Bathe the dog as needed and use baby wipes between baths. Do not use zinc oxide diaper rash cream as this can be toxic if ingested.
Dogs with limited mobility can easily develop pressure sores from lying in the same place for too long. Be sure to get your dog up and moving as much as possible. when lying down, ensure the dog has ample padding and is turned to a new position regularly. Also bear in mind that a dog may get sores or become dirty from dragging himself along.
Your paralyzed dog may have trouble grooming himself, so be sure to brush his coat frequently in addition to other basic grooming.

Add Fibers To Your Cats Diet
On top of feeding them more wet food, you can also help your cat having regular bowel movements and softer stools by adding some fibers to their diet.
Foods such as pumpkins, peas, spinach, and carrots are all good sources of fibers for your cat.
These are also very good allies against obesity because they will bulk up your cat food and prevent them from overeating.
Remember that cat food should never be spiced or cooked in any fancy way and it would actually be best served boiled with no salt or oil.
Most Common Causes Of Constipation In Cats
There are several causes behind constipation in cats and most of them are easily fixed at home without the need for expensive medical procedures.
Cats are very independent and sometimes we may forget that theyre sometimes fragile animals who are often over-sensitive to any minor change in their lifestyle.
Most of them can easily upset thier stomachs too.
Public enemy number one of cats is the infamous hairballs.
If you have a cat, you cannot escape the fur hell and you probably know that no matter how often you brush their fur, your cat will always manage to ingest enough to cause some trouble.
A cats sandpaper tongue is capable of brushing away a lot of dead hair each time your cat cleans themselves and all this hair ends up creating little or big balls in the stomach and intestines, where they become hard and difficult to expel.
Unfortunately, brushing your cat regularly doesnt always solve this problem for good, but there are a few products you can use, like hairball gels or complimentary food designed to remove furballs.
Dry food is very much loved by cat owners because its easily portioned, cheaper than wet food, and lasts much longer once you opened the package.
Many famous brands produce high-quality dry food that is designed to provide your cat with all the nutritional elements they need to grow healthy.
However, a good cat diet should not consist of dry food only.
Dirty Litter Box
The litter box should be cleaned every day .;

How Long Does It Take For A Broken Cat Tail To Heal
It takes time for a broken tail to mend, especially for nerves to repair. A full recovery can take up to six months.
Its important to see your veterinarian if something seems wrong with your cats tail. Only a vet can determine how extensive the injury is with an exam and x-rays. A vet can also prescribe pain relievers and other medications your kitty may need to ease discomfort while they heal. For most kitties, care and rest is all they need to be able to swoosh their tails again.
What Should You Do If You See Poop Stuck Halfway Uut Your Cat
If you can see the piece of stool clearly and your cat lets you handle them, you can remove the poop manually using a cotton ball soaked in lukewarm water.
Your cat will lick the part you cleaned afterward, so its very important to use only water or wipes that are specifically designed for cat fur.
Any other kind of wipe could contain chemicals or additives that may be toxic to your cat.
When an adult cat or a kitten has poop stuck in the anus, its fairly easy to spot it right away because they usually start dragging their bum across the floor and often leave an unpleasant streak behind them .
It is very uncomfortable for a cat to find itself in this situation.
Especially because cats are very clean animals and they usually get their fur all dirty while trying to remove the poop with their odd methods.

How To Take Care Of A Paralyzed Cat
Cats can suffer paralysis as a result of numerous conditions. Paralysis in cats may affect only the rear legs or all four limbs. If your cat is experiencing paralysis, it will require dedicated efforts from you in order to maintain a good quality of life and avoid secondary health issues that can result from immobility.
Help with Elimination Depending upon the cause of your cats paralysis, urination and defecation may be beyond the cats control. Loss of bowel and bladder control is one of the most challenging hurdles for pet owners to contend with when it comes to cat paralysis. In such cases, prepare to do laundry every day. Protect your flooring by placing a sheet of plastic underneath your cats primary resting spot. Floor protectors that are frequently used under office chairs are excellent options. The cats bedding will be positioned on top of this. You will need to swap out the cats bedding each time it eliminates in order to maintain the cats sense of cleanliness.
Help with Grooming Another problem of cat paralysis is that the cat may not be able to groom itself effectively. Help your cat to stay clean by gently brushing her coat daily. If your cat is a longhaired breed, you may opt to have the coat trimmed to a shorter length, especially if the cat seems painful during brushing sessions. Use a dry shampoo that is formulated for use in cats to clean the coat and remove elimination odors.
