Best Friends Animal Society, a collection of no-kill animal shelters, and other shelters across Utah are celebrating Black Cat Appreciation Day on Tuesday in an effort to bring Utah closer to become a no-kill state.

SALT LAKE CITY Best Friends Animal Society, a collection of no-kill animal shelters, and other shelters across Utah are celebrating Black Cat Appreciation Day on Tuesday in an effort to bring Utah closer to become a no-kill state.
Black Cat Appreciation Day was created in an effort to recognize black cats who are often overlooked in shelters and rescues. A study investigating black cat bias found that black cats experience the highest euthanasia and lowest adoption rates compared to cats of other colors.
Temma Martin, with Best Friends Animal Society, said that celebrating black cats by adopting them or posting pictures of them on social media could help combat that bias, and possibly bring Utah closer to becoming a no-kill state. The state is about 800 animals shy of the title.

He has been socialized around cats and people and seems to do well in these environments, but as long as he gets some attention, hell do well as an only child.

Murray A chorus of barks, yips and whines sounded through Wheeler Family Farm on Saturday afternoon as hundreds of Utahns chaperoned their pets at Salt Lake County Animal Services seventh annual Petapalooza.
The event featured food trucks, a pet psychic and pet rescues for all animal lovers to visit. But the main goal was pet adoption as Salt Lake County aimed to break its record of 150 pet adoptions in seven hours.
Aly gets a little help from Sam Hardy on the lure course as Salt Lake County Animal Services hosts its 7th Annual Petapalooza: Pet Adoption at Wheeler Historic Farm in Murray on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022.
A spokesperson said Saturday night that they had at least 130 pets adopted on Saturday, but were still finalizing the numbers which included 76 dogs adopted, 45 cats adopted, and nine little critters like hairless guinea pigs or rabbits adopted.
The event had an amazing turnout and was busy all day, said Salt Lake County Animal Services spokesperson Callista Pearson. Hosting activities like Petapalooza is critical for the rescue community, Pearson said, since rescues are still recovering from not holding events during the pandemic.

Caring For Your Maine Coon
Maine Coons are long-haired cats. Some have longer hair than others, but there is no avoiding the fact that youre going to have to put in a lot of time grooming them.
If you absolutely do not want a cat that requires brushing, Maine Coons are not for you.
That said, its not a huge issue. Keep a brush handy, it can even be a brushing mitt, and give them a brush daily when you have a moment.
If you get them into a routine of being brushed from an early age, theyll enjoy it and roll around in excitement taking it as being playful or some fussing.
In addition to this, Maine Coons love playing. The more time you can make to play with them and help them burn off some of their explosive energy while theyre kittens, the better.
Being large cats, exercise is important to this breed. Most of which can be achieved by letting them outdoors, and with some large, sturdy pieces of cat furniture.
Outside of brushing and exercise, all they really need are the basic things all cats need. Plenty of quality food and fresh drinking water, some nice warm, quiet spots to sleep in, and of course, the acknowledgment that they are in charge!

Other Ways To Find Siamese Cats In Utah
There are not a lot of breeders in Utah specializing in Siamese cats. If youre not able to find what youre looking for, I recommend checking out what cats are in need of homes on the Adoptapet site.
Youre not going to find the kitten of your choice, but there are some really rewarding opportunities when adopting that you may not have otherwise considered.
At the time of writing this, I could see Siamese cats in need of loving homes in Kanab, Bountiful, and more. Obviously, this is always subject to change but you should definitely check them out!

What Is The Average Price Of A Siamese Cat
One of the first questions everyone asks, is how much does a Siamese kitten cost?
This is hard to answer because there are a number of factors that affect the price. Such as pedigree, the history of the breeder, show quality, markings, colors, variety, and so on.
Exotic cats like Siamese can range in price from a few hundred bucks to several thousand.
I rang a couple of catteries and breeders to get a ballpark figure before writing this and I was told Siamese typically range between $600-$1,000 on average. So, thats a good ballpark figure to work with.
If thats out of your budget, you could always consider adopting and rehoming a cat from a shelter or rescue.
Thats always a noble thing to do, and often it gives an older cat another chance at enjoying the company of a loving family.

How Much Does A Maine Coon Cat Cost
If you want an adult Maine Coon, youll pay a lot less than a kitten. In fact, some are free or close to free if you find one in need of a home at a shelter.
You can expect to pay a few hundred bucks depending on where you find an adult Maine Coon. Its an admirable thing to do though, as there are always cats in need of a loving home.

SALT LAKE CITY Salt Lake County Animal Services is offering a reduced adoption fee of $5 for many animals this weekend through a partnership with Bounty paper towels and Best Friends Animal Society.
Large dogs, cats, kittens and small mammals will be available for the reduced fee on Friday and Saturday. All of the adoptable pets are already fixed, vaccinated, microchipped and “ready to go home immediately,” officials with the shelter said in a news release.
Small dogs and puppies aren’t included in the discount.
“Salt Lake County Animal Services has seen an increase in dogs, young and old, coming into the shelter, that need a little bit of training and a loving home to help them be the best pet they can be,” said Talia Butler, division director of Salt Lake County Animal Services.
“Overall, there have been more stray pets coming into the shelter, and fewer owners coming in to reclaim their pets and take them home,” she said.
Animal advocates point to the COVID-19 pandemic as a significant factor in the influx of shelter animals.
Caring For Siamese Cats
Just like most cats with short fur, Siamese are easy to care for and low-maintenance.
The only real huge chore that comes with caring for cats is brushing and taking care of long-haired breeds.
Apart from that, its really just a case of providing food, water, plenty of warm spots to sleep, and some cat furniture for them to play with.
Siamese are a little more demanding than your average cat, I will say that. They love to play, be fussed, curl up on laps, and generally be involved in where the action is.
Nothing wrong with that though, right!
Just make sure you have some cat toys and furniture like a cat tree, tunnel, and some other things thatll direct their claws away from your furniture.
Overall, I would say theyre easy to care for and low maintenance.
