Treatment Of Worms Fleas And Parasites
Internal ParasitesThe American Society of Veterinary Parasitologists states that greater than 90% of kittens are born with worms. While a queen is pregnant, the larvae migrates to the queens breasts. When the kitten nurses from the queen, larvae are acquired in the milk. This is the most common way that kittens acquire worms. The American Society of Veterinary Parasitologists recommends that all kittens be dewormed four times at two week intervals. This is a simple and highly effective method of ridding your cat of the most common type of worms in NY, hookworms and roundworms. You administer a liquid or tablets to your cat. The medication is very safe and very effective.
Tapeworms are another common form of worm that affects cats. Tapeworms are acquired when cats ingest infected fleas. The flea hosts the immature stage of the tapeworm. Upon ingesting the flea, the immature stage of the tapeworm grows and develops into a tapeworm in the cats intestine. Treatment for tapeworms should be commenced only after the cat has been checked and found to be flea free. The medication is very safe and effective. Two doses are given two to three weeks apart.
The last parasite to be discussed is probably one of the most common ones, ear mites. Ear mites are transmitted by contact with other cats . So if your cat is diagnosed with ear mites please be certain to have your other cats checked to insure that they are not also infected.
But Why Isnt There One Product That Protects Against All Parasites
We asked our Pet Nutritionist, Polly why this was the case.
“One of the reasons that there isnt a product that covers all parasites is that its difficult to register a product in Australia with more than two active ingredients.”
Consider trying a couple of different treatments over an appropriate amount of time on your pet after consulting your vet. Some pets will benefit greatly from flea collars while others will get better protection from a tablet. You may also notice that some pets are immune to certain treatments.
Contrary to what some people are saying, its not critical that you change over their treatment every 12 months. In fact, it would be best if youve found a treatment that works for them, that you stick with it.

How We Picked And Tested
To find the best flea and tick treatments, we spoke with six pet and pesticide experts about medications, side effects, active ingredients, and regulatory concerns. Our two veterinarians shared their personal product recommendations and shopping advice, which guided us in this review. They agreed that flea and tick treatments should both kill and protect against these bugs and work for at least 30 days. They also shared the favorite treatments they recommend to their own clients. We cross-referenced their advice with dozens of treatments sold across retailers like 1-800-PetMeds, Amazon, Chewy, Petco, and PetSmart, among others.
We categorized our search by orals/chews, topicals, collars, sprays, and shampoos. We dismissed sprays and shampoos because they offer protection for only days or a week at a time, and pet owners are more likely to misuse them compared with other products. That left us with eight brands of chews, topicals, and collars for cats or dogs. We selected the four brands that were highly recommended by our experts, that kill and protect against a wide range of pests, and that are sold across retailers at a variety of budgets.
Some Flea Products Are Dangerous To Cats
Products labeled for use in dogs only should never be used on a cat. Some ingredients that are well-tolerated by dogs can be toxic to cats. “Anything with a permethrin, also known as pyrethrin, should never be used on a cat,” Sawyer said. ” are very sensitive to pyrethrins and can have significant neurologic side effects, even death. Never use a product labeled for a dog on a cat as it may have pyrethrins in it even if not exclusively mentioned on the label.”

Most oral medications are used every 1-3 months that can vary by brand. The standard time frame for applying topical medications is usually every 30 days, but this can depend on the brand used. Catego Flea & Tick Spot Treatment For Cats
While its effective against both fleas and ticks, Categos biggest claim to fame may be its applicator. Its extremely easy to use, enabling you to put the oil right where you want it without getting it all over yourself in the process.
The formula uses a cocktail of active ingredients to kill fleas, including Fipronil, Dinotefuran, and Pryiproxyfen. This means its unlikely to stop working because if one ingredient doesnt kill fleas, one of the other two will.
Of course, some owners will balk at putting that many chemicals on their cat, even if its been approved by the relevant authorities.
It only comes in one dosage size, which is intended to treat all cats above 1.5 pounds. This may pose a problem if you have a massive breed like a Maine Coon, as it likely wont be as effective on them as it is on, say, a Cornish Rex.
Catego also seems to have an attractive flavor, as cats seem to love licking it off one another. You dont want them to do this, so if you have multiple cats, youll need to keep them separated until the oil dries.
- Not as effective on large breeds
- Cats seem to enjoy taste

Fleas are most common in warm humid areas, and while more prolific in summer, they are found year-round in many parts of Australia. Most dogs and cats need flea treatment indoor cats may be an exception.

Different chemicals have different actions:
- Some treat existing fleas only, but act fast, relieving your pet’s immediate misery. But new fleas can jump aboard pretty quickly afterwards.
- Some affect adult fleas when they bite the animal so existing fleas and any new adult fleas that come along are killed.
- Some interfere with the flea life cycle, making eggs unviable.
Some products combine chemicals to do all of the above, while some products have one or two actions.
If the infestation is bad, you might start with a fast-acting adult flea killer, and use other measures for longer-term protection ask your vet for advice. It’s much easier to prevent an infestation than eradicate one, so get your control measures in place early.
Flea populations can become resistant to certain chemicals. Your vet is best placed to know about the options that will suit your local area.
When In Doubt Ask Your Vet
The right treatment depends on your location, your activities, and your pets medical history. Pet owners who hike with their dogs have different needs than those who have house cats. Avoid just grabbing any box off the shelfinstead talk with your vet, who will be aware of recent pest outbreaks in the area, product recalls, and your pets medical history. If your pet has a minor reaction to the flea and tick product, such as application site discomfort, dont freak out. I do see topical site reactions and its not common, but some animals just have more sensitive skin than others, said Dr. Tierra Price, whos a shelter veterinarian and the founder of the BlackDVM Network. She added that its best to consult your vet before switching to a different flea and tick treatment if youre worried about side effects.
Our experts said pet owners shouldnt dismiss these products entirely. Its possible there were multiple factors that could contribute to problems, noted Jennifer Gervais, a pesticide specialist with the National Pesticide Information Center, an EPA partner. We just dont know.

What About Products Like Collars Sprays And Shampoos
To be blunt, most of those products dont work. They may kill a few fleas and ruin the day for some others, but they simply arent as effective as oral or topical solutions.
However, they may be helpful when paired with those more effective products. Shampoos can be especially useful if you bathe your cat before putting on a topical solution or giving them a tablet, but on their own, they wont solve the problem for long.
You may also see natural products that use essential oils or similar things these promise to eliminate fleas without subjecting your cat to toxic pesticides. Unfortunately, while they may be natural, theyre also largely worthless.
There are certain powders that you can apply to your carpets to kill any fleas that may have jumped off your cat while they were in the house. Theyre worth using for that purpose, but dont expect them to do anything for your cat.

What About Flea Sprays
Flea sprays are cheaper than their topical or oral counterparts. But many products need weekly applications, so in the long run they arent as cost-effective or convenient as a monthly topical or chew. Since these treatments kill on contact, you also generally need to spray down your entire pet, which takes a lot more work than a couple of drops on the scruff of the neck.
Some treatments, like Advantage Treatment Spray for Dogs, direct owners to rub the spray around the pets eyes, nose, and mouth, and they can cause adverse reactions if ingested.
