Food And Water For Pregnant Cats

I Adopted A Pregnant Cat

The queen will need to eat more than usual, especially in the last three to four weeks of pregnancy when she needs approximately 25 per cent more food.

Feed her kitten food in regular meals. Continue this feeding regime while your cat is suckling as she will use double her usual energy requirement.

Water is also vital for your cat’s health, so make sure that pregnant, birthing and lactating queens have constant access to water, but during and after birth this must be out of reach of kittens to prevent them drowning.

Second Stage Of Labor: Birth

The second stage of labor in cats begins with stronger, more frequent uterine contractions that eventually lead to;the;birth of a kitten.;Do NOT move or distract your cat during;the;birthing process;because she may stop labor and begin again the next day;if she feels stressed.;

Depending;on the individual;queen, kittens are usually born every 30-60 minutes, with the entire litter being delivered in less than six hours.;Pregnant cats can have four to six kittens in a litter. You can use a timer to keep track of the time between kittens to make sure there isnt a problem.

Watch for Complications

Dystocia means difficult birth;and can occur for a variety of reasons.

If the mother;is having strong contractions and hasbeen straining for more than 60 minutes without birthing a kitten, she should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.;

What Should You Do After a Kitten Is Born?

Kittens;are born with a protective fetal membrane;that is usually removed by the mother cat shortly after birth. Fetal membranes are usually reddish-yellow in color and surround the fetus thats floating in amniotic fluid.

If the mother cat fails to remove the fetal membrane within the first minute after birth, you will need to break the sac;and wipe away any fluid from the kittens nose. Then open the mouth with the head facing down and clear any remaining membranes or fluid. You can then stimulate the kitten to breathe by firmly stroking their body with a towel.

What Does A Pregnant Cat Need

Your cats body is changing a lot during pregnancy and the needs therefore are different from those of a non-pregnant female.;What should you be aware of? What could potentially be harming for mother and offspring? How can you make the gestation period;as pleasant as possible for our animal?

Provide enough light and airfor the mother-to-be.;Exercise in moderation is always a good idea.;However, high jumps are to be avoided as well as cat fights, which can not only cause stress but are potentially dangerous for your cat as well.;

No need to pamper your cat or treat it like a porcelain doll, but try to avoid stressful and unfamiliar situations.;;

When Does A Female Cat Have Her First Estrus Cycle

Cats have their first estrous cycle when they reach puberty. The estrous cycle is better known as a cat’s heat cycle. On average, puberty, or sexual maturity, first occurs in cats at about six months of age, but this can vary slightly by time of year.

“The estrous cycle is better known as a cat’s heat cycle.”

Each cycle consists of several stages; the stage called estrus refers to when the female is sexually receptive, or in heat.

How Your Cats Heat Cycles Work

A cats heat cycles consist of various stages. A females first estrous or heat cycle takes place when they hit puberty at about six months old. Depending on the time of year, your kitten may reach puberty when they are a bit younger or a bit older.

The estrous stage of a female cats cycle is technically the days that they are in heat.

Each of these heat cycles lasts about six days.

If your cat doesnt mate during this time, they will go out of heat for an average of 14 days. This is the next stage of estrous.

After this time, your cat will again go into heat for about 6 days.

On average, then, an estrous cycle lasts about three weeks. However, the heat cycle can be as long as six weeks.

During the time that your cat is in heat, you may also find various tomcats in your yard. They will spray the area with their urine to mark their territory.

The tomcats may also try to get into the house to mate with your cat, even spraying the doors of the house with their urine.

Should your cat get pregnant, they will go through a gestation period of between 64 and 71 days, with an average gestation of 9 weeks. Once your cat has given birth, they will again go into heat some two to three weeks later, once the kittens start to wean.

How Many Times Can A Cat Get Pregnant In A Lifetime

An average cat can first get pregnant at around six months; the average gestation period for a cat is two months; cats can birth up to three litters a year; they can continue to get pregnant throughout their entire lives; the average lifespan of a cat is about 15 years.

Cats can have kittens as early as six months in age. A cat will have her first estrous cycle . She will continue to have these cycles twice a year, in the spring and the summer.

So, simple math says that a cat can, technically, get pregnant over 40 times in her life.

But, please keep in mind! Just because she;can;get pregnant many times throughout her life certainly does not mean she should! Just like with humans, pregnancy puts a massive strain on a cats body.

Should I Let My Cat Have An Estrus Cycle Or A Litter Of Kittens Before Spaying Her

I Trapped & Rescued a Pregnant Cat Off the Street

There are no valid reasons for letting a cat have an estrous cycle or have a litter of kittens before being spayed. Cats can become pregnant on their very first estrous cycle, increasing the chance that an accidental breeding may occur. Cats are indiscriminate, so a brother cat may breed with its sister, a father may breed with his daughter, and a son may breed with his mother.

A common myth is that female cats will become more friendly and sociable if they are allowed to have a litter of kittens. This is not true, and only serves to contribute further to the serious problem of cat overpopulation.

Do Female Cats Experience Menopause

Unlike humans, cats do not, in fact, experience menopause! They go through a comparable experience to menstrual cycles; starting around four to six months of age, female cats get their first estrus cycle, which means they can start getting pregnant. Each cycle lasts about six days.

However, though cats get their period, they do not also experience menopause. This means a female cat can technically get pregnant throughout her entire life, even as a senior.

Pregnant Or Worms Belly

Is your;cat pregnant or does it have a worm belly?

An increased appetite and a thicker belly do not necessarily indicate offspring.

There can also be a worm infestation, a deficiency, an allergy or a disease. If the condition persists and seems suspicious to you, check whether worms are at work. If a worm infestation occurs, cats also get a big, swollen belly.

If you are unsure, introduce your cat to a vet who will check your cat, find out the exact type of worm and give you the right remedy.

Keep in mind:;A visit to the vets is never a piece of cake and should only be undertaken in case of real need but better to be safe than sorry!

Why Is My Cat Bleeding

“When do cats have periods?” is an important question to consider, because knowing your kitty’s cycle will help you to identify why she is bleeding. Like humans, cats begin having an estrus cycle at the start of puberty, around the age of four to six months, and the cycle can last anywhere from seven to ten days. Unlike humans, who are fertile throughout the year, the prime time for cats to enter the estrus cycle is early spring to late fall.

In addition to your kitty’s howling and yelping, it’s at this time of the cycle that you may notice some light bleeding, which typically isn’t worrisome. Most likely, you’ll notice spots of blood on the floor or in her bedding. If you are familiar with your cat’s cycle and notice something out of the ordinary, contact your veterinarian right away in case there are other health concerns.

Cats are known for their oddball antics, but their weirdness will be amped up during their cycle. Along with making strange and unusual vocalizations, a cat in heat will exhibit unique behaviors, such as rolling on the floor, demanding more attention, rubbing against you or the furniture, spraying urine, or even trying to sneak outside, notes Petful.

Third Stage Of Labor: Afterbirth

Adult Ragdolls

The thirdand finalstage of labor is the passage of the placenta.

A;greenish-black mass of fetal membranes is expelled after passage of each kitten.;

Retained placenta is a condition that can occur if the mother cat fails to expel the placenta during birth. This can lead to fever, infection, lack of appetite,;and failure to care for the kittens.

If the queen has a;retained;placenta,;you will need to seek veterinary care for her as soon as possible.;;

How Long Should Vaginal Discharge Last After a Cat Gives Birth?

Vaginal discharge;may last for up to three weeks after the kittens are born.;The discharge will normally appear reddish-black since it consists mostly of old blood. If the discharge is overly bloody or;looks like pus, the queen should be examined by her veterinarian as soon as possible.; ;

Once your cat has given birth, the real work begins. Heres what you need to know about postpartum care, nutrition, and lactation.

How Many Kittens Can A Cat Have In One Litter

There are typically between one to 10 kittens in a litter. First-time queens tend to give birth to smaller litters of two or three kittens. Older queens tend to have smaller litters as well. It also may depend on the breed; Siamese cats tend to have big litters while Persian cats tend to have smaller litters. Its a smart idea to talk to your vet to find out how many kittens in the litter to expect, as sometimes a first-time mother will birth some but not all of its kittens, which can cause potentially life-threatening issues. Sometimes, pet owners are surprised by more kittens, as there is typically 10 minutes to an hour between them.

Food And Litter Tray Nearby

At first, the cat mother will not leave the box at all, except for a meal or going to the cat;toilet.;Place both toilet and food nearby to keep the distances short and allow her to return to her kittens quickly.;

The little ones dont need their own toilet at first because their mother takes care of cleaning them up.;

Only by the time that you give them extra food parallel to the mothers milk, an extra litter tray should be placed in a corner of the nursing box.;

TIP: The ideal cats toilet should be made from high-quality, easy-to-clean and recyclable plastic.; It must allow for sufficient space because the kittens like moving around. In addition, they like to leave their excretions in various different spots;;favourites are wardrobes and drawers, as they provide a safe space where no one can observe them.;

Make sure that you fill the litter box with bedding that does not clump and is well tolerated.

What To Do When A Cat Refuses To Feed Her Kittens

We think of cats as being excellent mothers.

There are a number of reasons why a cat refuses to nurse her kittens:

  • A first-time mother cat might be overwhelmed.
  • Or, if the litter is large, she might not have enough milk for all those kittens.
  • Sometimes a female cat, just like a human mother, comes down with mastitis .
  • Or the problem could be, as breeder Susan Graham points out, a retained placenta. You have to look at everything and not forget mama cat, she says.

Occasionally, it is a behavioral thing. Like Winifred Carrieres Siamese;cat named SuziTu, she might be focused on just 1;or 2;of the kittens.

Carriere writes in her book Cats, 24 Hours a Day that;SuziTu seemed to think that the first baby was the only one, for as each of the 5;was born, she industriously licked the first big bruiser while he eagerly sought and found his first meal. His siblings could, as far as Mama Siamese was concerned, shift for themselves.

Except for Kitten No. 5, whom the mama cat clearly regarded as excess baggage.

Carriere had to come to the rescue with an eyedropper filled with milk.

In time, SuziTu got a handle on being a mom and accepted the little-last-on-the-list.

What Age Can A Cat Get Pregnant

How Hard Is It To Get Pregnant?

A cat can get pregnant as soon as shes about four months old, which is why its so important to get her spayed early on. Typically, a female cat may experience heat around that time. A cat doesnt experience menopause like a human does; it can keep getting pregnant until the last few years of its life. Therefore, a cat that hasnt been spayed can get pregnant both very young and very old.

What Are The Basics Of Cat Reproduction

Cats reach sexual maturity from around 4 months of age. Hence current advice to have your cat neutered around 4 months old to prevent unwanted pregnancies .

The timing of reproductive activity is probably triggered by an increase in day length which signals that better weather is on the way bringing with it an availability of food animals for the cat so that when the kittens are born after a 9-week pregnancy the mother and kittens will have sufficient food. In the northern hemisphere, therefore, cat pregnancies and births increase in March, April and May and decrease from October to January, while in the southern hemisphere the reverse is found. Cats on the equator probably dont have a great deal of change in their reproductivity throughout the year.

However, for female cats, this time of heat or coming into season, or oestrus, isnt one long period but many short periods . During these periods the cat will exhibit what could be described as flirtatious behaviour, rubbing and rolling on the floor, marking, and making a plaintive yet demanding rising and falling pitch known as calling. Owners who havent previously owned an unneutered female cat sometimes think that their pet is in pain and that these behaviours are signs of illness, whereas in fact, theyre quite normal for a female cat in search of a mate.

If mating does not occur the eggs are not released and the cycle is repeated again about two weeks later.

What Happens During A Normal Cat Birth

Just before the birth, the female cat may become restless or meow or purr or pant She will clean around the birth passage and the teats. Its thought that she lays a trail of saliva for the kittens to follow to find a teat after theyre born. She will go through several different stages of labour . Each kitten is born in a sac of amniotic fluid that the mother licks and nibbles to free the kitten. She bites through the umbilical cord and eats the kittens placenta, and using her rough tongue she cleans the kitten and stimulates it to breathe. Most cats , will give birth without a problem and will need no human intervention.

What Should I Do To Prepare For The Kittens’ Birth

After a successful breeding, many queens show behavioral changes. Most develop an unusually sweet and loving disposition and demand more affection and attention during pregnancy.

During the latter stages of pregnancy, the expectant mother usually begins to look for a safe place for delivery.

Prior to this time, a queening or birthing box should be selected and placed in a quiet place, such as a closet or a dark corner. The box should be large enough for the cat to move around freely but have low enough sides so that she can see out and you can reach inside to give any needed assistance. The bottom of the box should be lined with several layers of newspapers or other disposable absorbent material, which will provide a private hiding place for the expectant mother and can be easily removed and disposed of after they absorb the birthing fluids.

How Do Vets Confirm If My Cat Is Pregnant

How Many Kittens Can A Cat Have?

One way to find out how long cats are pregnant is to confirm a cat is indeed pregnant. Dr. Nascimento says pregnancy can be confirmed by an ultrasound early on at around two weeks. There are also special hormonal blood tests. At around 40 days, Dr. Marks says a radiograph can be taken not only to confirm pregnancy but also to get an estimate of how many kittens are in the litter. Getting your cat to the vet can be an ordeal itself, but learning how to get your cat in a carrier without getting your eyes scratched out can help.
