Though there is not one state animal, the State of North Carolina does officially recognize a number of our native animals within their type. The state mammal is the eastern gray squirrel. The marbled salamander is the official state salamander of North Carolina. It has white and grey stripes across its back, leading to a marbled appearance. Our state bird is the northern cardinal, and our state freshwater fish is the southern Appalachian brook trout.

We heard thuds going through the forest and we thought, oh its a deer. I turned around and I saw the deer but wasnt expecting this humongous black cat chasing after it, says Bex Lobb.
She recently moved into her Waxhaw home on Waxhaw Indian Trail Rd S near Howie Mine Church Road.
We were expecting to see deers, squirrels, birds, but this was unexpected, laughed Lobb.
Lobb said even though her roommate had seen a similar large cat just days before, she was hesitant to believe her or her own eyes.
We thought she was crazy for telling us there was a huge black cat, but now weve seen it, she said, adding shes certain it was not a housecat.
It was so big that you really couldnt mistake it for being a black cat. Its tail was thick; its tail was as long as the cat if not longer. And I dont know any house cats that would go chasing a doe through the forest, she said.
Uncertain of what it could have been, Lobb posted to a Waxhaw community Facebook group.
I was thinking I must be crazy, so I posted on Facebook just to see if anyone else had seen it and after about 20 minutes I had comments after comments, Lobb said.
Theres about 440 acres to the south starting at my property line and going beyond the elementary school that is just woods. Nothing but woods and creeks, so plenty of territory, said Karriker.

Like most wild cats, both species are highly secretive and not typically seen, especially during the daylight hours. Decreasing habitat can cause more sightings in highly populated areas. |

In 2017, my local news channel ran an online piece titled, “TIMELINE: This week’s San Francisco mountain lion sightings.” And while the piece explicitly stated that such sightings were typically very rare, it was a little disconcerting to think even one such sighting could take place in a bustling metropolis like San Francisco.
But the reality is, as technologically advanced and digitally obsessed as our cities are, we’re all pretty much just guests in the wild space on which this country is built. “Many Americans don’t realize that even today we share our landscapes with wild cats,” says Shari Wilcox, Ph.D., Texas Representative for national conservation organization, Defenders of Wildlife in an email interview. “From the remote stretches of Arizona where the jaguar still prowls to bobcats lounging poolside in suburban backyards; from cougars who pass before the Hollywood sign each night in Los Angeles to lynxes who bound down ski slopes. Is the Florida Panther on the edge of extinction? Their numbers are growing but at a slow pace. In the 1970s there were only known to be around 20 Florida panthers in the wild. In 2012, their numbers had increased to somewhere between 100 to 160. Today, in 2021, according to the National Wildlife Federation, there are still only between 120 and 130.
Range Of The Florida Panther
In the southeastern U.S., panthers formerly ranged throughout Florida, as far west as Arkansas and as far north as South Carolina. Today only about 120-230 adult panthers exist, primarily in southwest Florida. Young males in search of their own territories have been documented in other parts of Florida but most of the breeding population remains restricted to south Florida, below the Caloosahatchee River. Conversely, it is not uncommon to find male panthers throughout the Florida peninsula, and one male ventured into western Georgia where he was shot and killed in 2008.

Although there are a few female panthers north of Lake Okeechobee, most females are found south of the lake and that is where most reproduction occurs.
Scientists classify the biological world into a series of categories beginning with the broadest and ending with the most specific. This classification is called taxonomy.
The Florida panther is classified as:

- Species – concolor
- Subspecies – coryi
Until 1993, the cougar was classified in the genus Felis along with the domestic cat, the ocelot and 27 other species. In 1993 the cougar was reassigned to the genus Puma.

Most of our animals have been permanently injured or have been imprinted, meaning they have no fear of humans and never learned the skills they would need to survive in the wild. Others have never known a life in the wild or are endangered species that are part of the Special Survial Plan, a breeding and management plan developed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to ensure that we have a sustained population of endangered animals and can conserve them for future generations.
What’s Up With Those Cats Wallburg Woman Has Unidentified Felines Near Her Home Thinks They May Be Cougars
One of the felines sighted by Janet Nichols peers into a weedy lot to the north of her house in Wallburg.
One of the photos that Janet Nichols took of a feline she believes to be a cougar living on property near her house in Wallburg.
Nichols says there may be as many as three of the felines living on vacant property beside her house in Wallburg. She believes theyre cougars, but notes that the felines dont act completely wild.
Still, she has not gotten any closer than 75 feet or so from the animals. Nichols has seen them on four occasions, sometimes watching them sit in the shade of some crape myrtles on the north side of her house.
Such a sighting might seem wildly improbable, since cougars have been extinct in North Carolina for over 100 years.
Nichols has shot photos and videos of the felines with her smartphone and shared them with the Journal and showed them to others.
She said everyone shes shown the photos and videos to is convinced the animals are cougars. One of the cats is bigger than the others. Nichols isnt certain there are three but believes that to be the case.
When her neighbor Amanda Adams looked at the photo evidence, she said she knew right away that the felines were not domestic cats.
I think the big one is 20 to 30 pounds, Adams said. I see raccoons, coyotes and deer, but Ive never seen that.
Wildlife experts say sometimes cougars are spotted that have been released by individuals who were keeping them as exotic pets.

Native Birds Of North Carolina
Birds from all over the country flock to North Carolina during migration, but there are many notable species that are native to the area. If youre out on a lake or river, youll probably see a few species of waterfowl, including the wood duck and mallard, or a wading bird like the great blue heron. Calls of songbirds such as the eastern bluebird and mourning dove are often heard ringing through the treetops. At dusk here in Black Mountain, we will sometimes hear the eerie call of the eastern screech owl. Eastern wild turkeys and turkey vultures are common sights along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Birds of prey such as the red-tailed hawk, peregrine falcon, bald eagle, and multiple types of owls are also native to the mountains.
Listen carefully at dusk, and you may hear an eastern screech owl calling out as the night falls.
How Do You Attract A Bobcat
The big cat is naturally suspicious, clever and sneaky. They eat rabbits, small rodents, grasshoppers, crayfish, raccoons, prairie dogs, porcupines, bats, snakes, birds and occasionally deer during the winter. Using a combination of a whistle, food, catnip, anise oil, feather and mineral lick will help attract bobcats.

Black Panthers: Cats Of Mistaken Identity
One of the biggest misconceptions about North Carolina wildlife is the existence of cougars, or black panthers, in our state. The cougar is a big cat known by many names including panther, mountain lion, puma and up to 80 more, but these are all the same species, Puma concolor.;

Although cougars are sometimes called panthers, “black panther” is not a name that can be attributed to this species. This is a blanket term for any large cat with a black coat due to a gene that produces a dark pigment. Mammals with this mutation are known as melanistic. In big cats, black panthers are actually jaguars or leopards. If you look closely enough, or have enough bright light, you can see spots amongst the dark fur. There has never been a confirmed or documented case of a melanistic mountain lion in the United States. Mistaken identities may also occur with the cougar’s smaller relative, the bobcat. Bobcats can be melanistic too, but this is extremely rare with only 12 reported sightings across all of North America.;
