Tested Examples Of How To Stop Felines From Pooping In Your Garden

How do I stop cats from pooping in my yard?

There are some myths circulating the online space about chasing kitties away. Cats are protected by law in the UK, so you cant call the authorities if they simply poop in your garden. We, however, wanted to know what really works, so we gathered peoples experiences. Mentioned below are only successful real-life examples that have worked for someone in your situation. It should be noted that they may not always work for you as there are different types of cats and different gardens, as well as varying degrees of this problem. To stop cats from pooping and fouling your garden once and for all, you can:

Make Your Garden Unpleasant

Its no secret that cats love digging. One of the main reasons they like fresh soil is that its easy to do their business. If you make your flowerbeds or garden unattractive to them, they will likely steer clear of it.

Rather than using traditional mulch or soft soil, try to use prickly, uncomfortable options instead. You can use pine needles as mulch or plant thorny or vining plants as a carpet around your existing plants. Cats wont like the way this feels on their calls, nor will they be able to dig easily.

Install An Ultrasonic Deterrent

Much like water-based deterrents, invest in an ultrasonic cat repellent that emits a high-pitched frequency to scare cats. While it may take up to four weeks to put them off coming into your garden, cats will find the piercing sound uncomfortable and leave – it is inaudible to humans.

Ultrasonic deterrents available to buy include the RSPCA-endorsed CATwatch deterrent , Pestbye’s more affordable version which can easily be propped in the soil , and this set of two from Primrose .

‘This is the first time independent research has shown that an ultrasonic device can have a deterrent effect on cats. CATWatch offers a pragmatic partial solution for non-cat owners who wish to deter cats from entering their gardens,’ says Andy Evans from the RSPB.

‘Gardens are becoming increasingly important to many birds, such as the house sparrow, song thrush and starling. All of these birds are regular visitors to gardens and CATWatch can help to deter cats from entering gardens.’

Become The Owner Of A Male Cat

Why it works: If you have a tom on your own, he will perceive the backyard as his territory and therefore defend it!

Disadvantages: Cats require minimal care, but now you are responsible for teaching your new friend where to poop. The mind of a cat works like this: if he has pooped somewhere before, he will poop there again. You have to make sure that the scent of cat faeces is concentrated in the desired spot of the garden. Teaching kitties where the loos at is much easier if you adopt them as babies. You dont want to put others through the same troubles youve been through, right?

Animal Shapes With Reflective Or Glowing Eyes

Usually made from metal, the animal shapes are fitted with eyes that glow or are reflective giving the appearance of another animal in the garden. The eyes are either made from a reflective material like glass or may have eyes that light up using solar energy. They come in a variety of animal shapes. I think are most effective to stop cats pooping in the garden when they are moved on a regular basis. They are easy to install and move and require little to no maintenance. Unlike sprays and dried materials they are weatherproof. In the USA, try something like these cat repellents and in the UK, like these cat shapes. But like any of these ideas, they may not be effective and cats that are regular visitors to your garden might become used to it.

Just as cats are very particular about smell, so are they picky about texture. There are several textures that cats cannot stand feeling on their paws. Covering the ground surrounding your garden or the dirt inside your flower bed goes a long way toward deterring cats from pooping in the wrong place.

Pine cones and mulch are both useful ground covers to sprinkle around your flower beds. You can also plant plastic forks in the soil with the tines pointing out to scare cats off.

If youre worried that this will detract from the beauty of your garden, try using clear utensils. Theyll blend right in! There are also different types of ground cover plants that can make your garden less appealing to cats.

Keep Away Cats With Plants They Dislike

Cats dont like the smell of lavender, lemongrass, rosemary, or citrus. These plants can be used as deterrents if planted around the perimeter of your mulch area to keep cats away from it. You could also plant thorny bushes such as holly or cactus for added protection against feline intrusion into your flower beds.

You may want to consider adding some cat-friendly plants that are okay for them to nibble on so theyll have something else nearby instead, like catnip . This way when youre trying hard and dont want any felines coming near your garden bedding space hopefully, this will do trick and deter those pesky critters from entering at all costs.

If you have a fence but strays still get in, prevent them from landing on the top of the fence with the Oscillot cat containment system. Designed to keep your cat safe at home, these rolling bars, applied to the top of a fence, will also keep stray cats out. Similar to the Oscillot are fence spikes. Solutions That Worked For Me

    • Using sprinklers: In my garden, I noticed that the cats usually showed up right around daybreak, so I set my sprinklers to come on then, and it really helped to keep the cats away. I have since purchased the Orbit sprinklers they will even chase deer out of your garden or yard.
    • A super-soaker water gun: I have also had great success with a heavy-duty super-soaker water gun I purchased. I just sit quietly at the edge of my yard and soak down any cat that comes by. Water works better than anything to keep cats away. Once you soak down a cat once or twice, it won’t be back. I set up one of the Orbit sprinklers right beside where I park my vehicles, and I rarely, if ever, have any cat tracks on my vehicles.
    • Use a motion-activated sound device and keep food away: It helps to think like a cat to determine why it is coming on your property. If they’re attracted to your pond, install either a motion-activated sound device or some sprinklers there. Food is one of the biggest reasons cats and other animals will come into your yard, so practice keeping your environment free of any food source and keep your garbage tightly covered. Your cat problems should go away quickly.
    • Be consistent: Don’t leave food out sometimes and then freak out when they come to eat. Don’t give them mixed messages. After all, cats are not dumb animals, and they will learn where they are welcome and where they are not.
