Its time for the 2022 Kitten Rescue Annual Yard Sale for charity! Well be holding our annual yard sale in Woodland Hills on Saturday, May 14th and Sunday, May 15th. Everyone is welcome to donate items to the yard sale, and all proceeds raised from the two-day sale go towards helping Kitten Rescue. Its a win-win you clean out your closets and garage, and together we all raise money for homeless cats and kittens!

In accordance with CDC guidelines, we highly recommend that visitors wear N95 and K95 masks that cover their nose and mouth. When you arrive for your appointment, if needed, ask for a mask. If you are unwell, please contact us to cancel.
Adoption appointments are obtained by completing a short questionnaire or an application . Those interested in cats/kittens are contacted by email so check your spam folder as well. Those interested in dogs/puppies are contacted by phone. Priority for appointments go to those who submit an adoption application versus the short questionnaire. Please understand that the appointment is to assess the animal/family match and may not end in an adoption.

Foundations Urge The City To Step In With Affordable Resources
According to Gaunt, there are currently about 40 mainly donation-funded foundations in the city that provide Long Beach residents with a variety of services from free spay-neuter, microchipping, adoption and fostering services, TNR, flea treatment and more. These services are either offered for free or paid for through donations.
Animal Care Services sometimes reserves surgery spaces for cats brought in from a handful of local groups they work with, because they come in and they leave really quickly, Dains explained. She said they are able to provide these services to about six to 10 cats a week. The rest are referred to local organizations, she said.
Some organizations, like the Little Lion Foundation in Long Beach, have begun focusing their services on other counties due to their frustration with the lack of city aid.
Claudia Otis, executive director of the foundation, said they began focusing their efforts on Orange County due to the lack of partnership from city-run Animal Care Services for the past three years.
The foundation began in 2019 and currently has 50-75 volunteers with 203 cats in rescue as of June 20, according to Otis.
Theyve been saying for almost three years now that its because of a lack of staff and because of COVID and because of this and because of that, but you know, were still having to operate, Otis said.
Animal Care Services is funded by the City of Long Beach.

We are always in need of volunteers to trap community cats, transport to vet appointments, and foster rescued animals. We do not have a shelter, so we are limited by the animals we can take in based on foster home availability.

City Resources For Stray Cats Strained During Pandemic
The pandemic forced many animal clinics and rescues into either permanent closures or limited capacitytreating sick and injured animals, but offering no spay-neuter services for healthy cats. This was one of the main factors that are now causing the overwhelming stray population.
During this time, you know, were not able to take in healthy stray cats, said Staycee Dains, director of Long Beach Animal Care Services. So we have to really reserve our handling resources to animals who need it the most, so animals that are sick or injured or in need of urgent medical attention.
Due to staffing shortages, the shelter has been operating at full capacity for a couple of months now, according to Dains. As of June 16, she said the facility had at least 111 dogs in their care, with only 99 kennels.
Theres a confluence of factors really, I think one of the biggest is the lack of accessible and affordable spay-neuter resources for people. I mean, thats where it all starts. Thats the beginning and the end of it. We cant adopt our way out of what were facing right now.

Giving These Little Ones Their Best Chance At Life
The Long Beach Little Paws Project was developed to give the tiniest and most vulnerable animal in a public shelter a kitten under 8 weeks old a chance to live.
The effort focuses on taking kittens who would otherwise be killed and provides a safe and comfortable environment for them to grow and thrive. Many of these little ones are frail with various medical conditions which must be addressed. These precious little lives must be cared for and nurtured twenty-four hours a day. All these kittens come to us via the City of Long Beach shelter, brought in by the public or by Animal Control, found orphaned or abandoned, some just unwanted. We dont think just being born should be a death sentence for these kittens! In 2019 alone, we gave 434 kittens whose lives would have otherwise ended there a chance to live!
The kittens are medically assessed at intake with a two week quarantine. Once stable and old enough, the kittens can then be transferred to other rescue groups and organization to get them adopted to loving homes and families. The nursery serves as a temporary safe haven providing the most precious gift, that of time to heal, to grow and escape the certain fate which would have awaited them at a crowded shelter which lacked the resources to care for them.
