Adorable, adoptable dogs and cats are back in Union Square storefront windows, just in time for San Franciscans to celebrate the holidays.

Macys started showcasing furry friends from the San Francisco SPCA in its store windows last week, resuming a holiday tradition that was paused the last two years amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

You can catch a glimpse of the animals between noon and 5 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through New Years Day, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas when the store is closed.

In addition, the organizations Animal Assisted Therapy team will bring therapy animals to the store between 4 and 5 p.m. on Nov. 29, noon and 1 p.m. on Dec. 7 and 2 and 3 p.m. on Dec. 18.

And, yes, youll be able to pet and snuggle with them.

This favorite tradition not only brings joy to holiday shoppers, but more importantly, it has helped more than 10,000 animals find loving homes, Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, CEO of the San Francisco SPCA, said of the 36-year partnership in a release.

Why Are Some Kittens Only Available In Pairsor With A Bonded Littermate

Because kittens play together, sleep together, and keep each other company while you are at work all day long! When kittens have each other to roughhouse with, they are less likely to break or chew things, attack or bite you when they play, or keep you up all night. Basically, they teach each other manners and keep each other out of trouble.

We may have kittens who prefer to be any only kitty and would be fine on their own we may be able help you find a kitten with that temperament.

    *kitten Application Process Update*

Now that kitten season is in full swing, we are gearing up for one of our busiest times of the year. And with pandemic restrictions lifting, we are also changing our process, meaning we are now operating both in person meetings by appointment, and pick-ups.

To connect as many adopters and kittens as possible, you are now able to add your name to the list with one single application. This saves your place in line and when contacted, you will be invited in for an appointment to meet a selection of kittens.

Alternatively, we are still offering pick-ups, which has been popular and successful during the past year. If you select this option, you will be called and can select kittens via photos or virtual meetings. Once you have chosen the kitten, you will be given a time to come and collect your new family member. This has proven convenient for many clients who are able to speak with staff at a good time, select from the comfort of their own home, and then come pick up their kitten.

We ask that you please only apply for kittens when you are ready to adopt, as when contacted, appointments and pick-ups typically happen within a day or so.

    The Dancing Cat House Rules

How to Adopt a Kitten at the SF SPCA

We want The Dancing Cat to be a fun and loving experience, both for you and our cats. We ask that our human guests kindly follow some simple rules when hanging out with the cats.

    • Well being: Please sanitize your hands upon entry to the space. Masks are required at all times onsite and we ask that guests practice social distancing.

    • Kindness: Best to let the cats come to you. Perhaps pick up a toy and invite play. Don’t pursue cats, pick them up, or pull on tails.

    • Cat Naps: Cats love their sleep! If cats are sleeping, feel free to talk gently to them and tell them how wonderful they are, but it’s best not to wake them up.

    • Cat Snacks: Do not feed the cats anything other than the official The Dancing Cat kitty food. They cannot eat human food.

    • People Snacks: You may bring in outside food and drinks. Drinks need to be in a bottle or a cup with a lid. No alcoholic beverages please.

    • Children: Some cats love kids and others are more timid. A responsible adult guest must closely supervise children. Children should refrain from running or making loud noises.

    • We encourage photos, but please no flash photography.

    • Phones: For the peace of mind of the cats and others, please silence your cell phone ringer and take calls outside.

    • Cat Furniture: Cat trees are for kitties-please no climbing.

    • Allergies: If you have allergies, we have Kleenex but we do not provide allergy medication.

If rules aren’t respected we reserve the right to quietly ask you to leave without admission refunds.

    Adoptable Shop And Garden Cats

While most of our cats find homes with people and families inside apartments and houses, sometimes we have cats in our care who just aren’t happy living in such close proximity with people. They are most content living a more independent life, and prefer not to be social with humans. These cats need a safe location such as a barn, farm, urban garden on a quiet street, warehouse, shop, or manufacturing facility where they can be cared for and fed, and admired from a comfortable distance. If you’re in need of a rodent control for your garden or a shop cat for your local business, these cats might be the ideal fit for you! Cat Town provides all necessary supplies and guidance for the acclimation process, and adoption fees are waived for these cats. To get more info and learn what it means to adopt independent cats, please complete our Adoption Inquiry form!

Scottish fold kittens in San Francisco for sale

San Francisco officials have voted to ban the sale of non-rescue dogs and cats at pet shops as part of a concerted effort to eradicate inhumane puppy breeding operations in the city.

The amendment will not affect licenced breeders however it will aim to tackle the prevalence of large-scale puppy mills, while helping to facilitate the adoption of thousands of animals already occupying the city’s shelters.

San Francisco will not be the first US city to implement such a measure, which will also ban the sale of animals under eight weeks old. Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston and Austin all enforce similar legislation.

Advice From Humane Society Silicon Valley

Once you have an adopter interested, we recommend that you screen that person carefully to ensure your pet finds a loving, permanent home. Make sure to ask them for a donation to your favorite animal charity or a re-homing fee to help ensure that your dog or cat is in good hands. Never give your animal away for free to someone you don’t know!

It is important that all human family members want a new pet, have the opportunity to meet your dog or cat, and that everyone interacts comfortably with your pet. If your pet is not comfortable with them, request another meeting. If the potential adopter rents their home, confirm they have a lease that states pets are allowed.

Other considerations are the potential adopter’s lifestyle: Do they have enough time for your dog or cat? Do they have the resources to provide lifelong care? What is their previous history with pets? Can they provide as much exercise as your pet needs? What other animals are in the home and are they compatible with your pet? Do any family members have allergies or other health concerns? Dont be afraid to ask a potential adopter for a personal reference or a reference from their veterinarian. Anyone that is prepared to care for your pet as much as you do will understand and appreciate your concern.

If at any point you need advice along the way or are feeling uncertain, please feel free to call us. We will be happy to assist you! You can contact us via our contact page.

Q How Long Is Production Time

Production time, on average, can take between 4-10 days . Please keep in mind that during the holiday season and high volume periods, production times may be slower than average, and shipping may be delayed by up to 5 days.

That being the case, here are our recommended order cut-off dates for the 2020 holiday season:

Please note: We know how important it is for you to receive holiday packages in a timely fashion. Cat Town and our print production partners will work very hard to ensure quality production and prompt shipping.

Given the current COVID-19 crisis and high demand on all shipping carriers this year, we strongly recommend that you order by the cut-off dates listed above. Thank you for your understanding and thank you for supporting Cat Town!

Cats in San Francisco: One Week Only!

What better way to end the year than by finding homes for plenty of deserving cats? Last month you helped us do just that for 41 lucky cats including 6 kittens from our new adoption area at the Rockridge Pet Food Express!

Summer may be long over, but at Cat Town, Summer School is still in session! Seeing the enormous influx of cats at Oakland Animal Services earlier this year, we strategized with their staff to find a way to help the greatest number of at-risk cats and kittens. Summer School was our solution.

The day after I first met 8-year-old Laszlo at the shelter, all the cats in his section of the shelter went into quarantine for two weeks. I couldnt visit him, but I couldnt get him off my mind. Id peek in the window to his room and hed see me and meow with everything he had. He couldnt understand why I wouldnt just come in to say hi.

Kitten Rescued From Freeway Ledge Near Sfo Up For Adoption

A kitten named Gwyneth rescued from a freeway near an overpass by the San Francisco airport earlier this month is now up for adoption

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — A kitten named Gwyneth rescued from a freeway ledge near an overpass by the San Francisco airport earlier this month is now up for adoption, the Peninsula Humane Society announced Thursday.

The not-so-scaredy cat was found June 10 on a ledge below a freeway sign at the I-380 connector near I-280 and Highway 101.

An airport worker contacted the Peninsula Humane Society, which then sent a member of its staff to the scene, equipped with a net to rescue the feline.

“The kitten was trapped on the ledge which was at least 50 feet above the ground. She was unable to climb up to the freeway, but even if the kitten was able to, she would have found herself directly in the dangerous and fast paced traffic,” Buffy Martin Tarbox, a spokesperson for the Peninsula Humane Society, said in a statement.

Since the June 10 rescue, the agency says no one has claimed the kitten and she did not have any identification.

The Calico kitten, about two or three months old, was safely rescued and is now looking for her forever home.

Those interested in adopting the kitten are asked to contact the Peninsula Human Society/SPCA at 340-7022.

San Francisco Bay Area Animal Shelters

If youve exhausted all other possibilities, local shelters will often, but not always, take in animals owned by residences of the cities that they serve. There is occasionally a fee to surrender an animal to a municipal shelter. Remember, cats and dogs surrendered to a shelter do not have the benefit of an advocate, and often become stressed and shut down. This makes it more difficult for potential adopters to see their true temperaments. That said, sometimes that is the only option.
