Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 24, 2016 : Nurses in St. Kitts and Nevis have a reference guide pertaining to matters including the structure of the Ministry of Health, job descriptions and the types of leave, thanks to a manual that was handed over to Minister of State, responsible for Health Honourable Wendy Phipps.

The reference book entitled Ministry of Health, St. Kitts Nevis, Community Based Health Services Orientation Manual, was handed over at the Annual Nurses Reporting Meeting on March 22, when Coordinator of Community Based Nursing Services, Eulynis Browne, highlighted some of the information.

It has a synopsis of community nursing and it gives the history of community nursing in St. Kitts and Nevis, Nurse Browne said. It also informs the new worker of the structure of the Ministry of Health because some people really dont know how the Ministry of Health actually operates. So it is important that we understand the structure and the order. Also, it has the roles and responsibilities of each person.

In addition to outlining the role of each position, the manual states the rules specific to nursing officers such as procedures for sick leave, absences and documentation.

Nurse Browne said that the document provides a synopsis of other areas that network with community based services such as social services, the Health Promotion Unit, and the schools health district.

The manual was presented to the minister on behalf of community-based nursing.

Approximately 40 Health Professionals In St Kitts And Nevis Successfully Complete Training

Basseterre, St. Kitts : Approximately 40 health professionals in St. Kitts and Nevis successfully completed a six-week training geared towards further equipping them with the relevant knowledge and skills needed to execute their duties efficiently and effectively.

Today, we gather to celebrate with about 40 Emergency Medical Technicians and Nursing Attendants and their family and friends after a period of training to develop knowledge and skills to perform the role they desired within the healthcare system, said Danielle Wiggins, Nurse Manager at the Joseph Nathaniel France General Hospital, while delivering welcome remarks at the Graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 26. For about six weeks, healthcare personnel and other professionals shared the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure that you understand the jargon used and that you are adequately equipped to function as EMTs and Nursing Attendants.

Nurse Manager Wiggins said that EMTs are tasked with responding quickly to medical emergencies and, if needed, transport patients to the hospital.

On the other hand, Mrs. Wiggins noted that Nursing Attendants are responsible for meeting patients basic needs.

Nurse Manager Wiggins reminded the EMTs and Nursing Attendants that healthcare is a labour-intensive effort. She encouraged them to do great work, love what they do and provide quality care to everyone they serve.

St Kitts Nevis Healthcare Shortage And Shame

Right after part one of the two-part article, on the plight of health care workers in St Kitts Nevis was published, the Ministry of Health summoned a meeting of nurses Tuesday, May 5 to announce a pay raise for the nurses, retroactive January 2020.

The Ministry told the nurses that the government had planned and prepared for this long before, however, were only now getting to the nurses with the good news.

While happy for the deserved pay raise, which they had been seeking for years, the nurses asked about risk pay and the conditions of work , and upgrades for nursing assistants, nurses aids, EMS workers, junior doctors, orderlies, technicians, and the whole range of health workers.

The answer they got, we are told, was that those things would have to be given due consideration. It appears that the nurses will not sit back and allow these matters to linger.

Meanwhile, the junior doctors, many of whom are graduates of Cuban medical schools, have been catching rough times and desperately need their situation addressed.

They were told that they needed to go through 12 months of training orientation because their basic training in Cuba exposed some practical gaps which needed to be filled by gaining more experience and training in the public sector health system.

Under this arrangement, they have not been allowed to go into private practice, during their orientation period, which is understandable. Fine, and fair enough. And theyve been going through the process.
