A Very Special Visit: Cat Town Oakland Ca

Cat Town is the first cat cafe in the United States, opening in 2014.

This alone would be a standout feature, but when you consider their influence on cat cafes, rescue and adoption around the world, simply put, they are heroes.

A non-profit rescue since 2011, their approach has transformed the cat cafe scene into the cage free shelter extension & adoption center model that dominates the United States today. They also pioneered socialization techniques used to improve the adoption rates of shy and scared cats, as well as those that have human avoiding tendencies.

The day I visited, I was fortunate to meet with Ann Dunn, the founder of Cat Town. She began as a volunteer at Oakland Animal Services, a shelter that at the time was under resourced to care for the number of animals it received each year. She felt that it was a difficult environment for some cats and sought an alternative that would help those at the greatest risk for euthanasia.

Ann and Cat Town still work closely with Oakland Animal Services, sharing the same core group of volunteers that are adept in identifying cats that would benefit from the environment provided by Cat Town.

Ann and I chatted inside The Studios at Cat Town, a 2017 expansion of their main adoption center where staff and volunteers work with Oaklands most difficult to place shelter cats, providing dedicated attention and a greater opportunity to be adopted.

Did you know that the first cat cafe was opened all the way back in 1998? It was in Taiwans capital, Taipei, and was called Cat Flower Garden. Eventually it became so popular that cat cafes opened in Japan, Singapore, all across Europe, and now San Francisco!

One reason cat cafes are so popular in cities is because of housing. In San Francisco, and many large cities worldwide, apartments are too small or do not allow pets. A cat cafe lets people freely play with cats without worrying about their landlord or stressed out pets and many of the cats are available for adoption!

Since cat cafes are usually associated with Asia, it was a huge surprise when a cat cafe opened in San Francisco. Now there are two: KitTea in San Francisco, and Cat Town Cafe in Oakland. I was super excited to check out KitTea, since we unfortunately cant have pets in our apartment. In fact, in San Francisco around 60% of housing units arent pet-friendly so you can imagine the popularity of KitTea. They tend to sell out reservations pretty quickly, but more on that laterI really loved my visit to this awesome cat cafe, and now you can check it out too if youre passing through San Francisco!

*This is part of our series this week on San Francisco.* Weve been to two cat cafés, so we wanted to try KitTea Cat Café in San Francisco. I learned not to go late afternoon like we did the cats are tired and dont feel like playing. So it was disappointing. Even my son, who begs me to visit other cat cafes, got bored 20 minutes in and asked how much longer we were staying. Given that we paid $20/person for the hour, I was disappointed. It was crowded with people and the cats ignored us. No cats wanted to play!

KitTea was the first cat café in the U.S. They adopt cats out who are staying there. They have a café inside, which you can visit even if youre not visiting the cats theres a window to watch whats happening in the room. They sell waffles and other snacks, as well as various teas.

The admission to the cat play area includes a cup with unlimited tea. They have four carafes inside with different green teas. So that was nice.

The highlight for me was the bathroom just outside the café area. They have a Japanese toilet, with a dryer, spray and seat warmer. I was cracking up in the bathroom the whole time.

Hours: check the website for hours. They have some special events, like Thursdays is yoga at 7:30, and Friday night is mewvie night at 7:30.

We walked the Golden Gate Bridge, visited the beach and even attended a historic Giants baseball game where Barry Bonds hit his 700th home run. On a cool and cloudy day, we arrived for our 10 am appointment, and I was delighted to see that the space, while small, was sleek, modern and catified- filled with blonde wood furniture, colorful pillows and lots of shelves up high for the cats to climb.

The cat space is separated from the cafe by large glass windows, where several patrons were enjoyed lovely looking food and steaming cups of tea. True to the name, tea is the featured beverage at KitTea and included in your admission are unlimited cups of green tea.

Sixteen cats were in residence the day we visited, with two available for adoption: Carter, a gorgeous gray and white kitty and Miso, a sleek black feline. We lucked out as the cats were alert and full of energy at 10 am, entertaining the patrons as they frolicked about. One cutie named Dolly Purrton even climbed onto one visitors back to her delight!

Hector, the cat wrangler was kind, politely answering all of my questions. He showed the folks in the room which toys the cats enjoyed playing with.

What About The Cats

Most cat cafés are filled with rescue cats up for adoption. At KitTea, each cat has a bio where you can learn more about their personality and background. If youre looking to adopt, KitTea is quite possibly the best way to see how your new pal interacts around people and other cats.

If youre having questions about cat welfare, feel free to ask the cafe about it! Founders dont go into the cat café business to make big money. KitTea has a strong mission to get these guys adopted, and the cats lives in the playroom are much better than they might be in a shelter or in line for euthanasia. Theyre free to come and go from the room as they like, and get plenty of breaks so theyre not over-socialized.

Spcas New Cat Cafe Pop

The San Francisco SPCA is once again launching a pop-up during the month of February. Theyll be celebrating the Year of the Dog by bringing cuddles and cuteness to One Embarcadero Center from February 2 28.

This years pop-up will be significantly larger than last years and will host several special events. Visitors are invited to stop by the space in One Embarcadero Center on weekdays, , 11 am 7 pm .

What The Hell Is A Cat Caf

It has been said that San Francisco is kinda like Neverland: childless young adults with Peter Pan syndrome. Weve already warned our grandmothers that we wont be married by 26, having our first child by 28.5, or making a downpayment on our starter house by 31, because lets be honest we could never afford a house anywhere near here, anyway. Instead, we work long hours to rent tiny 4-bedroom apartments, imbibe $14 cocktails, and squirrel away the remnants for concerts, hobbies, and the occasional adventure.

We usually feel empowered beside those who settled down so soon but damn if there arent times wed like to take care of something besides ourselves anything, really. Were tired of overwatering our succulent garden, so we get a fish. They like water, right? When that proves unfulfilling, we retreat to the suburbs to BBQ and hug the babies of our more established friends. And all that really does is validate our fears that were not quite ready yet.

We want to pass our love onto something less than a baby, and more than a fish. So, naturally, San Francisco gave us a cat café. KitTea, how did you know we needed you?

It’s a wonderful place to spend time with a variety of cats. The cats are busy in their own world – playing, sleeping and many times ignoring you. One can watch, pet and play with them while sipping on some cold beverages available for free. The entry is by online reservation – so the place isn’t crowded. The care takers work hard to keep the place clean, organized and interesting. Books on cats was a nice added touch!

The cats are cute. $28 plus $1.40 in undefined “taxes and fees” is a total rip-off to pet cute cats and to watch cute cats move around a room. What a waste of money. Plus KitTea no longer is a cafe KitTea didn’t even offer…us tea while we were there seeing the cats. KitTea advised people going there to bring covid vaccine cards, but KitTea didn’t ask to see them. KitTea can’t follow a covid safety protocol.More

Lovely spot of calm and zen in the heart of the city. We did a walk-in, and were lucky. It is worth checking availability or booking online first. Great setup and great idea. Cats are very friendly and enjoy the attention. If youre a cat…and tea lover, go and spend half an hour or an hour here and enjoy chilling out with feline friends.More

Visit A Cat Cafe In San Francisco Through This 360 Video

Over the last two decades, cities around the worldâfrom Tokyo to New York Cityâhave started pairing caffeinated beverages with friendly felines. And now, San Francisco is continuing the trend with the Kit Tea cat cafe, Gizmodo reports.

The cafe opened last summer and, true to its name, features an assortment of gourmet teas and adoptable cats. Visitors must make an advance reservation to visit the cafe, which runs around $20 for an hour-long visit, and features an assortment of events and activities, including âMewvie Nightsâ and a yoga class called âCats on Mats.â

But if cats are your cup of tea but youâre not in the San Francisco area, you can still visit the cat cafe, thanks to the production company Everything is Film. The group created a nearly two-hour-long, 360-degree video of the cats of Kit Tea in action.

According to Gizmodo, Everything is Film claims their so-called âCatquariumâ is the biggest cat video in the world, with a full 1 trillion pixels. Featuring feedings, playtime, and laser pointer theatrics, the video puts viewers right in the middle of everything. And, for anyone who doesnât have the time to sit through the full video, the company lists timecodes for some of the more memorable moments on the videoâs YouTube page. What Is A Cat Caf Like

In the case of the cat café in San Francisco, KitTea, youll want to make your reservations in advance. Your reservation will entitle you to a spot in the room and bottomless tea. During the week, time slots go for $20 per person for an hour, while a weekend spot will run you $25 per person for an hour .

Upon arrival, youll check in, enter the cat lounge, and order a cup of tea. The room is scattered with a variety of toys, cat structures, and of course, a whole lot of cats. Before youre allowed to play, the cat wrangler will go over the rules and give an introduction to all of the felines. Then, theres no time to waste. For the next 30-60 minutes, you better go hard at pretending to have a pet.

We almost forgot. If sitting in a room full of cats simply not enough for you, you can also enjoy a Yoga with Cats session or a Mewvie night at San Franciscos KitTea. This is not a joke.
