New research has found that feeding cats one large meal a day may help control hunger better than feeding them several times a day.

Got a cat that always seems hungry? New University of Guelph research suggests you might want to reduce — not increase — how often you feed them.

Animal nutrition specialists in U of G’s Ontario Veterinary College and Ontario Agricultural College have found that feeding cats one large meal a day may help control hunger better than feeding them several times a day.

The research, published in the journal PLOS One, revealed that cats that ate one meal a day were more satisfied, which could result in less food-begging behaviour.

The results also suggest cutting back feeding frequency could help reduce the risk of obesity by controlling cats’ appetite and potentially making them eat less — an important discovery given that obesity is the most common nutritional problem affecting cats.

“These findings may surprise the veterinary community and many cat owners who have been told their animals need several small meals a day,” said study co-author Prof. Adronie Verbrugghe, a veterinarian with OVC’s Department of Clinical Studies, who specializes in companion animal nutrition. “But these results suggest there are benefits to this approach.”

Even big cats in the wild engage in a form of intermittent fasting, the authors note, feasting when they make a kill and fasting before the next one.

How Often A Dry Food To Feed A Cat

The number of meals you give your cat consistently will rely upon various components. Up until the age of a half year, little cats will develop quickly and exhaust a ton of energy, so you should feed them kitten-specific food four times each day. After this stage, their meals should be decreased to prevent unnecessary weight gain and you may choose to feed your cat two times every day.

In case youre feeding your cat only dry food, you can likewise leave their everyday serving in their bowl and permit them to snack on it for the duration of the day at whatever point they feel like it. Most cats like to graze and leaving some dry nourishment out for the day permits them to fulfill themselves.

Adjusting Your Feeding Schedule And Changing The Food You Give Your Cat

If you are adding a cat to your family, there are certain steps to take. These adhering strictly to the previous schedule, food, and quantity which the cat is familiar with. You can then slowly change the schedule and food to suit your preference. Changes can have a huge impact on a cat. To reduce the stress which comes with making drastic changes to the environment, consistency in the schedule and food can be very helpful. In addition to preventing any intestinal upset, it can also ease the transition phase.

If you feel it is the right time to change the cat food and schedule to your own, then you also have to decide on the type of food to give the cat. Will you opt for raw, dry, or wet food? Or will a combo be a better option? You also have to decide on the right quantity to feed the cat. This will be determined using the calorie count of the food.

Calculating How Much Wet Food to Feed a Cat Guide

Canned food only is my first choice. For an adult cat, start with ½ of a 5.5 oz. can twice daily and no additional food. This is the starting point and likely will need to be adjusted downward.

For little cats, a half of a 3 oz. can twice daily may work better. This amount is also cat-specific and often needs adjusting up or down. Feeding canned food seems to create the best balance between calories and feeling full, and the meal seems to tide the cat over better than a dry food meal.

Your Cats Dietary Needs Evolve Over Time

As your cat moves through kittenhood, early adulthood, and beyond, his nutritional needs will change. Meeting those requirements at every phase of life sets the stage for good health.

Your first stop when choosing the right food for your cat? The nutritional adequacy statement.

Usually located on the back of the bag or can, this statement indicates whether or not the food is nutritionally complete and balanced for its intended life stage. The label will read, for example, formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles for all life stages.

Foods that arent nutritionally complete and balanced will usually be labeled for supplemental feeding only. These foods dont contain the appropriate balance of macronutrients and micronutrients and shouldnt be your cats sole source of nutrition.

While youre looking at the label, check out the feeding instructions as well. For the average house cat, the appropriate feeding instructions are usually already placed on the packaging of the cat food.

The nutritional guidelines on the package will point you in the right direction, though you may need to make some modifications to fit your cats exact needs.
