The shortage has been building for months, according to the NRDC. On May 8, the FDA issued a warning about the potential for salmonella contamination in cat food. On May 14, the FDA sent out a recall notice for all Friskies products for dogs and cats.

The FDA is concerned that these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. People who buy and feed Friskies dog and cat food products should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase, the agency wrote in the notice.

According to the NRDC, the FDA has received reports of more than 1,000 illnesses related to pet food. The NRDC has also reported that the problem isnt limited to a specific brand.

While we are seeing a lot of reports of Salmonella in cat food, this is not an isolated issue, and it is affecting multiple brands and lots of different pet food products, said NRDC senior

Lives Cat Food Recall History

We do not believe that a recall indicates a low quality food or company, and we respect the fact that sometimes things happen that cause a manufacturer to recall a food.

Usually these things are non-life-threatening, and we think its important to take a moment to be thankful about just how few recalls there really are in the industry, considering the enormous volume of food produced.

However, we do believe that a history of recalls may point to a larger issue with a company, and that discerning consumers want to know who theyre buying from, especially when it comes to something as important as the food you feed your beloved cat.

Here is a list of recalls that have affected the 9Lives brand in the past:

About 9 Lives Cat Food

9 Lives Cat Food is owned by Big Heart Pet Brands, a subsidiary of the J.M. Smucker company. 9 Lives cat food was first produced in 1959 but it did not get real recognition until the late 1960s when Morris, an orange tabby cat, became the spokes-cat for the brand.

9 Lives is based in San Francisco, California and offers both dry food and canned food options, divided among several different product lines. Their website states that their wet food products give cats a diverse selection of tender and meaty morsels simmered in rich gravy with savory shreds or flakes of fish that create a flavor and an aroma cats wont be able to resist. 9 Lives also offers five different product lines of dry cat food and each formula is uniquely tailored to meet the nutritional needs of cats in different life stages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakfast for our 6- cats and they love it. We try to keep the cats on grain free dry foods after one had some health issues but they all love canned wet food and Friskies is the most popular though 9 Lives is also a good one. The Shreds have a lot of liquid at the expense of the meat/fish portion.

As we continue our search for the best cat food for your feline buddy, I thought Id outline basic information for each of the companies I explore and put them here in this section.

Pet food companies change ownership constantly, it seems, with smaller companies getting swallowed by larger players. In turn, some larger players are swallowing other larger players, or parts of the larger players.

If you live in the U.S. and are like most other cat guardians, almost every product in your house can be traced back to fewer than 15 or so companies.

Pros

Tasty. Daily Essentials is very popular with kitties. This cat food even passed the high standards of some known finicky kitties, according to their owners.

Its ingredients include chicken by-product meal, meat and bone meal, and salmon meal. The flavor is enhanced by adding beef fat and rosemary extract in the ingredients. It really is no wonder kitties love this cat food.

Affordable. 9 Lives has some of the most affordable cat food in the market. Many cat owners find great value in this cat food as their pets are happy to eat Daily Essentials, and they save a lot of money too.

Cons

Plant ingredients. According to a few reviews, they find that this cat food contains too much carbohydrates from plant sources in its ingredients. Some if its protein are from plant-based ingredients as well, such as soybean meal and corn gluten meal. This product also has whole ground corn as the first in its first ingredients.

Daily Essentials is a dry food product that is popular among kitties for being tasty, and among cat owners for being affordable. It has been the dry cat food of choice for people who have quite a number of feline mouths to feed.

Looking at its protein content, it really is not so bad at a minimum of 30% crude protein. However, a few reviews note that it has too much plant-based ingredients.

Wet Cat Food Recipe Review: 9 Lives Meaty Pat With Real Turkey & Giblets

9Lives Plus Care Cat Food, 12

This 9 Lives Meaty Paté with Real Turkey & Giblets recipe is described as a scrumptious meal for cats, made with real turkey meat and giblets. It features delicious, soft grounds loaded with irresistible flavor that will have your cat licking his chops and leaping for more. The thing you have to pay attention to with this product, however, is the use of the word with. There are certain regulations regarding naming pet food products determined by the amount of the named ingredient used in the formula. A product only needs to include 3% of the named ingredient to use the word with. For example, a can of Turkey Cat Food needs to contain 95% turkey but a can of Cat Food with Turkey only needs to contain 3% turkey. Keep that in mind as you read the rest of this review.

The remaining ingredients in this 9 Lives Meaty Paté with Real Turkey & Giblets recipe consist of carbohydrates, flavors, colors, and supplements. Soybean meal and whole wheat are both low-quality fillers that are difficult for cats to digest and very low in nutritional value. Animal digest is a flavoring frequently used in low-quality pet foods and colorings and dyes are never a good thing. This recipe does contain some synthetic supplements to help provide balance, but synthetic offer lower bioavailability for cats than natural sources for the same nutrients things like fresh fruits and vegetables.

In addition to this, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives are used in 9Lives brand cat food formulas, which most pet owners did not like. Some cats are reported to have digestive problems, or allergic reactions to 9Lives brand cat food products.

I have cats with multiple problems one with pancreatitis, one with hyperthyroid and one with diabetes. The vet has recommended for the pancreatitis a dry fat weight of no more that 17% in any food. For the diabetic, a high pfotein, low carb food and the other to just deal with his allergies . So you make any dry or canned foods that meet these needs?

    Is It A Nationwide Problem

9-Lives Cat Food Commercial (Morris The Cat, 1977)

The NRDC said that it is unclear if the shortage is widespread or isolated to some regions.

It is important for people to know that a product shortage does not necessarily mean the product is dangerous, the organization said. People should not feed their pets any product that is out of stock, and instead, they should switch to a safe alternative.

Friskies Cat Food is one of the most famous brands in the market. When the company announced thatFriskies cat food discontinued, to be specific, Riskys Chicken Flavored Cat Treats, a nationwide panic ensued.

    Pros

Kitties favorite. Tuna has been one of the popular flavors of food among kitties. This savory product is no exception. Kitties go crazy for this turkey canned cat food. The most abundant among all of its ingredients is real turkey and chicken. According to a cat parents review, his pets nearly tackled him before he could put the food in their bowls.

Good price. Cat parents love that this wet cat food is quite affordable. This food is made with visibly real turkey. As such, this product certainly offers great value for its price. Kitties enjoy having their nutritious, hydrating meals, and their owners dont need to spend a lot.

Easy open. This canned cat food has a pop-off lid like most canned cat food. Cat parents are finding this feature very convenient.

    Cons

Picky eaters may not like it. This canned cat food has received not-so-great reviews about the sizing of the turkey morsels. Others complained it being too big for their kitties. Plus finicky cats seem to not like it.

This wet cat food is loved by numerous kitties. The real turkey & chicken in its ingredients make it extra tasty, and provides the protein that felines need. The kitties enjoy their meals, and their owners save money as it is also affordable.

Our Final Thoughts: Is 9 Lives A Good Brand

Unfortunately, we cant recommend 9 Lives cat food in good conscious. We love the fact that the brand is affordable and offers a wide variety of choices, but it is clear from our review that the company isnt particularly concerned with quality.

Not only are many recipes very carbohydrate-heavy, but most make heavy use of unnamed meat or poultry ingredients and by-products. We also found it troubling that so many recipes were nearly identical in their ingredients list with simple tweaks to the order or the product name.

If youre looking for an affordable brand of cat food but you arent willing to compromise on the quality of your cats nutrition, there are plenty of other brands to consider.
