Reasons I Choose Solid Gold
With so many brands to choose from why do I choose Solid Gold Indigo Moon cat food?
I have found Solid Gold cat foods are superior to other brands for these reasons:
1. Solid Gold offers very high quality foods. They have 20 superfoods in every variety such as: blueberries, broccoli, cranberries, kelp, salmon and olive oil.
2. Solid Gold offers a great variety of cat foods for different needs such as kitten, senior, grain free, low fat and unique proteins such as duck, rabbit and lamb in case your cat is picky or has food allergies or sensitivities.

Here is my experience with cat food intolerance and some information on allergies vs. intolerance in cats.
Indigo Moon is made with chicken. Fit as a Fiddle is made with Alaskan pollock and Katz-N-Flocken is made with lamb.
4. Many varieties of Solid Gold such as Indigo Moon and Fit as a Fiddle are also grain or gluten free. Katz-N-Flocken is made with brown rice which should be healthier than standard fillers such as corn found in other foods.

How To Tell If Your Kitten Was Properly Weaned
When looking to adopt a kitten, one of the most important questions you should know to ask is, has she been weaned? What is weaning, you ask? Weaning is the process of graduating a kitten from milk to solid foods, and that she has learned everything she can from her mother. Once a kitten is eating on his own, that is usually a tell-tale sign that hes ready to be separated from his cat mama. However, just like humans, some cats take longer than others to fully prepare for life outside of kittenhood. Are there any ways you can you tell if your cat was taken from his mother too soon? And if so, what are they?

Is Solid Gold A Good Cat Food
Solid Gold is an above average brand of cat food that is low in carbohydrates, made with high quality protein, and with holistic ingredients in mind. Most of their dry food recipes are free from fillers, soy, wheat, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives.
The Solid Gold wet food products would be the brands downfall and considered an average product. Even with high protein levels it contains questionable ingredients like coconut milk and pea protein in the top five ingredients.
Solid Gold does source most of its ingredients from right here in the United states and refuses to use ingredients from China. Their dry food is manufactured in the US while their wet food is produced in Thailand.
Solid Gold is approved by AAFCO and all recipes include AAFCO nutrient profile. It meets the guidelines set for natural cat food which has added minerals and vitamins.

Our Final Thoughts: Is Solid Gold A Good Brand
Overall, were very pleased with Solid Gold as a brand. We appreciate the variety they offer with their products and their commitment to quality. We like the emphasis on digestive health and immunity as well, particularly the recognition that nutrition plays a key role in both.
The downside of Solid Gold cat food is that its a little bit pricey. If youre looking for a high-quality brand, we heartily recommend Solid Gold wet food. The dry food is good too, but its significantly more expensive at close to $3.00 per pound.

A General Guideline For Preparing Homemade Dog Food
My DIY dog food recipe is more of a general guideline, rather than an exact meal plan that I follow each week. My dogs diet changes the same way ours does, depending on what we do and what we buy or grow.
However, we almost always stay with this basic formula:
- 50 percent cooked protein
- 25 percent cooked complex carbohydrates
- Fats and supplements
Protein is always meat and usually chicken, though weve also used turkey, pork, and beef. We feed any and all parts of the animals, but most commonly, we saute chicken breasts or chicken thighs in coconut oil and ground turmeric.
Coconut oil has a host of health benefits for dogs, such as improving the skin and coat, increasing energy, aiding digestion, reducing allergic reactions, promoting wound healing, preventing yeast and fungal infections, and supporting arthritis or ligament problems.
Turmeric has long been studied for its powerful medicinal properties, including its use as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
We add it to the coconut oil since it is fat-soluble, and use it to support our pugs joint health.
Speaking of dark meat, we feed thighs and breasts interchangeably. While well remove the skin from poultry and trim off excessive fat from red meat, we dont worry about buying the leanest meat possible for our dogs.
A little fat is necessary for a well-rounded diet.
They tend to be the leftovers in our produce bin, so we never have to buy, say, a whole head of cauliflower just for the dogs.

What Do You Need To Know About Diabetes In Cats
When it comes to diabetes in cats, there are two primary types: Type I and Type II. The treatment for both types is similar, but it is still a good idea to understand the condition from all angles so you can better care for your diabetic cat.
Type I diabetes is more commonly seen in dogs than in cats, and it is a condition in which the pancreas fails to produce insulin entirely. This condition requires lifelong treatment with supplemental insulin. Type II diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces insulin but in insufficient amounts. This condition is typically related to obesity in cats and can often be resolved with weight loss, dietary changes, and short-term insulin therapy.
Here are some of the most common symptoms of diabetes in cats:
- Signs of excessive urination
- Increased water consumption
- Walking lower to the ground
- Weight loss despite increased appetite
Diabetes is sometimes difficult to diagnose in cats because the symptoms may be subtle. The two biggest signs to look for are increased thirst/water consumption and weight loss despite increased appetite. When the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin, the cells in your cats body are unable to absorb glucose from the bloodstream. Instead, they turn to an alternative source of energy your cats muscles and stored fat.
What Makes A Good Cat Food
Cat food brands are a dime a dozen, so how do you know if one brand is better than another?
To be able to tell the good from the bad, youll need to learn the basics about reading a cat food label. All the information you need to determine the quality of a cat food product is there for you to see.
Here are some of the most important things to look for in a good cat food:
- Nutritionally complete and balanced
- Healthy fats
- Digestible carbohydrates and dietary fiber
- No by-products or artificial additives
- Beneficial supplements
Now, lets take a closer look at each of these things and how they contribute to making a cat food worthy of your consideration.
When it comes to evaluating cat food, you should start by looking for an AAFCO statement of nutritional adequacy, then check the guaranteed analysis and list of ingredients. The American Association of Feed Control Officials has created nutrient profiles for cats in different life stages growth & reproduction and adult maintenance.
If a cat food meets these minimum nutritional requirements, it will carry a label somewhere on the package that looks something like this:
Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that provides complete and balanced nutrition for maintenance of adult cats.
Once youve determined that the product is nutritionally complete and balanced, then you can take a closer look at the ingredients themselves and their percentages.

How Good Is Purina Cat Food Really Top Picks & Reviews
Updated: February 18, 2021 by Kristen Chapple
Hunting around for the cat foods that both my cat and I love the most can be challenging. While I had it all figured out for a number of years, when I moved house not long ago, I had to start again looking for shops that sold the foods I love to buy.
I have since switched to buying online on chewy.com, but before that, I considered switching brands to one that was more widely available. I was tempted by Purina, as I saw it everywhere I went, including the shelves of my supermarket, so it would be easy to pick up while grabbing things for myself.
When I was considering Purina, I naturally went into research mode to learn everything I could about the industry leader that has been around for about 100 years, as well as the quality of the food that they make for cats.
In the end, I decided that while some of their wet cat foods were of decent quality, in general, their cat food philosophy did not align with mine since they deliver recipes that are heavy in carbohydrates and rely on meat by-products as an essential ingredient. While there are a few recipes that I would buy if I was in a pinch, it wont be a staple cat food in my household.
Read on to find out more about Purina as a brand and more about the cat foods that they do offer, and the ones I would consider buying for my cat.
- No added probiotics
- No added omega fatty acids
- Uses meat by-products
- Contains artificial additives
