Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Bay Area Rescue Groups And Shelters

Town Cats is not the only rescue group in the Bay Area. There are many cat, dog, rabbit, and other animal specific groups who work hard to rescue as many animals as possible. If looking to rehome or surrender an animal, we encourage you to contact each group. Just because one group is full does not mean all the other are.

When contacting Rescue Groups/Shelters, provide as much information as possible such as situation, timeframe/urgency, history, color, sex, age & personality of animal, reason for placement, medical work, etc. Most rescue groups are volunteer and not government funded. They will assist you if they can.

Below is our resource listing showing all the rescue groups and shelters in the bay area. In addition, we have provided resources for purchase and rental of humane traps used in Trap-Neuter-Return.

Town Cats has rescued, helped, and adopted out thousands of friendly cats to loving families.

Your Animal’s Journey To You

Every adoptable animal is spayed/neutered, microchipped, and ready to find you. All shelter animals also go through medical and behavioral screenings, and we share our findings with you, but please know that unexpected issues can sometimes arise after adoption. Most importantly, every animal is loved and nurtured during its stay at the SF SPCA.

Animal Shelters And Rescue Organizations

If youve exhausted all other possibilities, local shelters will often, but not always, take in animals owned by residents of the cities that they serve. There is occasionally a fee to surrender an animal to a municipal shelter. Remember, cats and dogs surrendered to a shelter do not have the benefit of an advocate, and often become stressed and shut down. This makes it more difficult for potential adopters to see their true temperaments. That said, sometimes that is the only option.

The shelters in the South San Francisco Bay Area work very hard towards being designated as no-kill shelters. They will not euthanize healthy, social animals. Cats and dogs are adopted by loving owners every day from these shelters.

Bay Area Pet Adoptions is a non-profit, 5013 No-Kill shelter, pet rescue, and adoption organization that relies on donations from the public to house, feed, and medically care for the dogs and cats taken in our adoption program. We are not operated or funded by any national animal group and must rely on contributions from people like you to keep our shelter open. All financial contributions and in-kind donations are tax deductible. Bay Area Pet Adoptions does not euthanize for space.

The mission of Bay Area Pet Adoptions is to shelter companion animals that we have rescued from kill shelters/animal control facilities and individuals until permanent homes are found for them. Our adoption program strives to place the animal with a family whose lifestyle and activity level matches that of the animal.
