You may find breeders advertising Teacup Persians, but before you put down a deposit for a kitten, its a good idea to check that the breeders are reputable.
You can find a list of breeders approved by The International Cat Association, and this is a good place to start. Ask the breeder how long theyve been breeding Persians, why they breed Teacup Persians, and how they select cats to be a part of their breeding program. Its also a good idea to ask for references from previous customers.
Any reputable breeder will be happy to welcome you into their home or breeding facility and allow you to meet both parent cats so you can find out more about their temperament. Breeders should have assessed the health of both parent cats, and this is particularly important for the Persian breed, which can be prone to several genetic health conditions that can be passed down to kittens. Ask to see the health results for both parent cats. You may want to organize a health check with your own vet before buying a kitten a reputable breeder will be happy to facilitate this request.
If any breeder is reluctant to answer your questions, then this is a red flag. Their breeding program may not be robust, and the health of the kittens could be compromised as a result.
Health Risks For Teacup Cats
Do a Google search for teacup cats for sale and youre likely to find a ton of breeders selling pint-size Persians.
But even at their normal size, the physical attributes that make the Persian breed of cats so cute can also make them more susceptible to certain health problems. Those problems are even further exacerbated in a smaller cat, Lisnik says.
For example, breeding a Persian cats snub nose to be even shorter can increase his risk of developing chronic respiratory issues, including asthma and breathing difficulties, she says.
Teacup-size Persians are also more likely to suffer from infections in the eye and nose, and jaw issues that affect their ability to properly chew food, Brunt says. As a breed, Persians are also at an increased risk for developing polycystic kidney disease. Making their kidneys even smaller could amplify that risk, she says.
Regardless of pedigree, any cat bred to be teacup-size is more likely to suffer from oral and dental diseases. Teacup cats are also unable to regulate their body temperature as well as their regular-size peers, Brunt says. Their smaller bones and joints also make them more predisposed to arthritis and injury.
Regular exams are important to ensure teacup cats are as healthy as possible, Brunt says.
Finally, Lisnik and Brunt say it is plausible that cats bred to be extra-small might also be extra-stressed, as their stature may limit their stamina and ability to act on predatory urges.

Persian Cats At High Risk Of Health Problems Study Shows
Persian cats are a popular breed worldwide and are instantly recognisable from their luxurious coat and flattened face.
They can cost a lot of money to purchase. But despite this, almost two thirds of Persian cats suffer from at least one health condition according to the largest every study of this breed. The research, which was conducted by the Royal Veterinary College in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh. The study revealed that haircoat disorders, dental disease, overgrown nails and eye discharge are the most common conditions diagnosed in the Persian cat.
Many of these health issues may be related to the long coat and flat face that is characteristic of the Persian breed. These health issues represent major welfare challenges for Persian cats that should be considered by breeders and future owners. There are an estimated 100,000 Persian cats in the UK.
The results of this study will help breeders to select which cats to breed from, veterinarians to spot diseases earlier and owners to ensure that they take preventive measures for common conditions in the breed. This new information will also help the public understand more about the welfare challenges relating to owning and caring for Persian cats.

What Is A Teacup Cat
Teacup cats are cats who have been bred to be as small as possible. While most adult cats weigh around 9 to 10 pounds, teacup cats are bred to be about two-thirds that size, says Dr. Jane Brunt, a feline veterinarian at Cat Hospital at Towson in Baltimore, Maryland, and the executive director of The CATalyst Council, a group dedicated to promoting the health, welfare, and value of the companion cat. Some adult teacup cats weigh as little as 5 or 6 pounds, she says.
To make a cat that tiny typically involves mating an undersized male with an undersized female, she says. But not all small cats are created equal. While some animals are naturally petite, others may be stunted in size because of health problems, disease, or undernourishment.
These cats were born runts for some reason. Something is not quite working in the body, says Katie Lisnik, director of cat protection and policy at The Humane Society of the United States. Thats one of our major concerns with breeding for purely physical attributes. It could lead to genetic disorders and health concerns.

There have been quite a few websites where silver and golden Persians are popping up recently that claim to have toy or teacup size Persians for extraordinary prices for pet quality cats with inferior bloodlines . Silvers and Goldens have always been smaller than other colors of Persians. An average silver or golden Persian female weighs 5-6 pounds. An average silver or golden Persian male weighs 7-9 pounds. Reputable breeders are working to breed away from this small size as a Persian should be a medium to large cat. However, some breeders are misleading unsuspecting pet owners into thinking this trait is rare, coveted, or new, and charging exorbitant amounts of money for their kittens. This is very wrong and it hurts the breeders who are honest about their kittens. This is not a business nor is it a hobby that someone can get rich from. Please if you think that raising beautiful Persians is a great retirement plan, DO NOT contact me. We have been breeding Persian and Himalayan Kittens for 33 years now. We have been on the internet for 17 of those years and have seen tons of here today gone tomorrow websites. Many claim to have Ultra-Tiny Teacups, Ultra Mini Size, Micro Size, kittens as a marketing ploy to get you to believe their kittens are the tiniest.
Many cat breeders will take pictures of a three or four-month-old kitten, post it on their website, and say it is an Adult Teacup Cat.Some of these websites are still up and running, scamming people every day.
This is so misleading and makes all of us look bad, especially those who have worked very hard and poured decades of our lives downsizing in a healthy process.
How is the public supposed to know the actual age of the kitty in the picture? You want to believe what you see, but lets face it, unicorns are not real, and neither are many of these pictures floating around on the internet of so-called Teacup Cats.
Chinchilla Longhair And Sterling
In the US, there was an attempt to establish the silver Persian as a separate breed called the Sterling, but it was not accepted. Silver and golden Persians are recognized, as such, by CFA. In South Africa, the attempt to separate the breed was more successful the Southern Africa Cat Council registers cats with five generations of purebred Chinchilla as a Chinchilla Longhair. The Chinchilla Longhair has a slightly longer nose than the Persian, resulting in healthy breathing and less eye tearing. Its hair is translucent with only the tips carrying black pigment, a feature that gets lost when out-crossed to other colored Persians. Out-crossing also may result in losing nose and lip liner, which is a fault in the Chinchilla Longhair breed standard. One of the distinctions of this breed is the blue-green or green eye color only with kittens having blue or blue-purple eye color.
